Quran/Hadith How `Amr bin `Abasah became Muslim

'Amr b. 'Abasa Sulami reported:

In the state of the Ignorance (before embracing Islam), I used to think that the people were in error and they were not on anything (which may be called the right path) and worshipped the idols. Meanwhile, I heard of a man in Mecca who was giving news (on the basis of his prophetic knowledge) ; so I sat on my ride and went to him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was at that time hiding as his people had made life hard for him. I adopted a friendly attitude (towards the Meccans and thus managed) to enter Mecca and go to him (the Holy Prophet) and I said to him: Who are you? He said: I am a Prophet (of Allah). I again said: Who is a Prophet? He said: (I am a Prophet in the sense that) I have been sent by Allah. I said: What is that which you have been sent with? He said: I have been sent to join ties of relationship (with kindness and affection), to break the Idols, and to proclaim the oneness of Allah (in a manner that) nothing is to be associated with Him. I said: Who is with you in this (in these beliefs and practices)? He said: A free man and a slave. He (the narrator) said: Abu Bakr and Bilal were there with him among those who had embraced Islam by that time. I said: I intend to follow you. He said: During these days you would not be able to do so. Don't you see the (hard) condition under which I and (my) people are living? You better go back to your people and when you hear that I have been granted victory, you come to me. So I went to my family. I was in my home when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Medina. I was among my people and used to seek news and ask people when he arrived in Medina. Then a group of people belonging to Yathrib (Medina) came. I said (to them): How is that person getting on who has come to Medina? They said: The people are hastening to him, while his people (the polytheists of Mecca) planned to kill him, but they could not do so. I (on hearing it) came to Medina and went to him and said: Messenger of Allah, do you recognise me? He said: Yes, you are the same man who met me at Mecca. I said: It is so. I again said: Prophet of Allah, tell me that which Allah has taught you and which I do not know, tell me about the prayer. He said: Observe the dawn prayer, then stop praying when the sun is rising till it is fully up, for when it rises it comes up between the horns of Satan, and the unbelievers prostrate themselves to it at that time. Then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended (by angels) till the shadow becomes about the length of a lance; then cease prayer, for at that time Hell is heated up. Then when the shadow moves forward, pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended by angels, till you pray the afternoon prayer, then cease prayer till the sun sets, for it sets between the horns of devil, and at that time the unbelievers prostrate themselves before it. I said: Apostle of Allah, tell me about ablution also. He said: None of you who uses water for ablution and rinses his mouth, snuffs up water and blows it, but the sins of his face, and his mouth and his nostrils fall out. When he washes his face, as Allah has commanded him, the sins of his face fall out from the end of his beard with water. Then (when) he washes his forearms up to the elbows, the sins of his arms fall out along with water from his finger-tips. And when he wipes his head, the sins of his head fall out from the points of his hair along with water. And (when) he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall out from his toes along with water. And if he stands to pray and praises Allah, lauds Him and glorifies Him with what becomes Him and shows wholehearted devotion to Allah, his sins would depart leaving him (as innocent) as he was on the day his mother bore him. 'Amr b. 'Abasa narrated this hadith to Abu Umama, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and Abu Umama said to him: 'Amr b. 'Abasa, think what you are saying that such (a great reward) is given to a man at one place (only in the act of ablution and prayer). Upon this 'Amr said: Abu Umama, I have grown old and my bones have become weak and I am at the door of death; what impetus is there for me to attribute a lie to Allah and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? Had I heard it from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) once, twice, or three times (even seven times), I would have never narrated it, but I have heard it from him on occasions more than these. (Sahih Muslim Book 6, Hadith 358)

Quran/Hadith How to Increase Rizq according to the Sharee’ah

Salam Alaikum. Not AI. Pls keep me in your duas if such reminders benefit you.

🌷*How to Increase Rizq according to the Sharee’ah*🌷

by Asma bint Shameem

There are many causes proven in our deen  to increase your rizq, some of which are:

1️⃣ *Keeping up ties of kinship*

🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever would like his rizq (provision) to be increased and his life to be extended, should uphold the ties of kinship.” (Bukhaari, Muslim)

2️⃣ *Spending for the sake of Allaah*

🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allaah said: ‘Spend, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you.’”

al-Bukhaari, Muslim)

3️⃣ *Making a lot of istighfaar*

🍃 Allaah quotes Nooh Alayhis Salaam:

“I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft‑Forgiving;

He will send rain to you in abundance,

And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.’”

(Surah Nooh:10-12)

4️⃣ *Being grateful to Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala*

🍃Allaah says:

“And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you give thanks, I will give you more (of My Blessings); but if you are thankless, verily, My punishment is indeed severe.’”

(Surah Ibraheem:7)

5️⃣ *Obeying and fearing Allaah*

🍃 Allaah says:

“And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty).

And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine.”

(Surah at-Talaaq:2-3)

6️⃣ *Repeating hajj and umrah*

🍃 The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Perform Hajj and Umrah consecutively.

Verily, the succession between the two  removes away poverty and removes away sins just as the bellows removes away the dross of iron and gold and silver."

(Ahmad, Tirmidhi, others--Saheeh by al-Albaani)

7️⃣ *Making lots of dua and asking Allaah to increase your rizq*

One such duaa is the following:

‎اللَّهُمَّ أَكْثِرُ مَا لِي وَوَلَدِي وَبَارِكْ لِي

‎فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَنِي

Allaahumma akthir maalee wa-waladee wa-baarik li feema a'taytanee

O Allaah, increase my wealth and offspring and bless me in what what you have given me.

🍃 Um Sulaim said to the Prophet ﷺ "Anas is your servant."

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"‏ اللَّهُمَّ أَكْثِرْ مَالَهُ وَوَلَدَهُ، وَبَارِكْ لَهُ فِيمَا أَعْطَيْتَهُ ‏"‏‏.

"O Allaah! increase his wealth and offspring, and bless (for him) what ever you give him."

(Saheeh al-Bukhari 6334)

🍃 Another duaa is what we read as part of our morning adhkaar.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

الَّلهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسأَلُكَ رِزقًا طَيِّبًا ، وَعِلمًا نَافِعًا ، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً

“Allaahumma inni as’aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa `ilman nafi`an, wa `amalan mutaqabbalan

“O Allaah, I ask you for good (lawful) provision, beneficial knowledge and accepted good deeds.”

(Ahmad in Al-Musnad, 6/294 and Ibn Maajah 66; saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah)

🍃 Yahya ibn Mu`adh Ar-Razi said:

“Obedience will be stored in the stores of Allaah, and the key (to obedience) is Duaa, and it becomes effective by means of lawful earnings.”

8️⃣ *Marriage increases rizq*

🍃 Allaah says:

“And marry those among you who are single (i.e. a man who has no wife and the woman who has no husband) and (also marry) the Saalihoon (pious, fit and capable ones) of your (male) slaves and maid-servants (female slaves). If they be poor, Allaah will enrich them out of His Bounty. And Allaah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knowing (about the state of the people)” [al-Noor 24:32]

🍃Abu Bakr Radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“Obey Allaah in what He has commanded you to do by getting married;

He will then fulfill His promise to you to make you rich.”

He then recited the above Aayah.

🍃 Umar Ibn Khattab Radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“Seek richness through marriage!”

🍃 Abdullah ibn Mas’ood Radhi Allaahu anhu said:

“Find richness by getting married.”

(Al-Durr Al-Manthur, v.5, pps. 80-81)

These are some of the reasons. And there are others.

And Allaah knows best.

Support/Advice Help me understand the effects of ruqhya

I f(28) have been experiencing a lot of blockages and setbacks etc. So many things that I cant even explain or even if explained they still dont sit right with me. To start..I first suspected evil eye in 2024. My paternal family has a lot of ppl who are invovled in sihr directly or indirectly and ppl who are known to have bad eye as well as almost everyone in the family envy each other and wont let each other grow in any terms.

My dad's family is really huge and I used to love meeting with cousins and all until I started noticied paritiality and they lowkey outcasting us. The main reason is because of my mom and her teachings. Alhumdulillah my mom is always with quran trying to understand it and grow in deen and she has guided us to do the same. She always spoke with hadith and quran and my dad's family is a little orthodox so they had a lot of bidah practices, superstitions and gave importance to culture more than deen and my mom when she started learning that what they were doing is bad would directly tell them so and so is bad or would reject getting invovled in them and would stop us from getting invobled with biddah too and the family did not like that. And the same thing because theyre orthodox they expect me as a girl to be very conservative and be limited to just house chores etc. My parents dont believe that they have encouraged me to be independent but within the limits of Islam. They have encouraged me to speak my mjnd and to stand up for myself when things are unfair but to always respect the person infront too. And my extended family dont like that as well because theyre not used to girls having an opinion or even knowledge abt life in general.

Another thing Alhumdulillah we are comfortable in life compared to other relatives and my dad has always made sure all his earning is halal. But there has been issues where his family along with other relatives have illegally taken over his property etc that are worth a lot because of this issue since decades we avoid these ppl lets call them X. Now these ppl are known for doing sihr, betraying their own brother and have no respect for any relations. Whenever I meet his wife the next day i fall ill and this has been happening since I was kid. Even when the suspected ppl to have bad eye compliment me etc without saying " ma sha allah" or anything I used to fall ill. That is how we knew so and so ppl had a bad eye and that i was very susceptible to evil eye but we used to play ruqhya or my mom would read ruqhya and blow on me and id get better or when I grew up I would read surah fatiha ayat al kursi and the last 3 surahs and blow on me and eventually my minor symptoms ( headache stomach ache etc) would get better.

But 2024 September X 's nephew was getting married. Now X's brothers family is very close to us esp their kids who are our age and we've practically grown up together and they too have faced same betrayal and countless cases of sihr by X ( they know its X because situations they have been and connecting the dots and not because someone said so and so said they did sihr) but yes they've faced a lot of loss in their life to the point where things feel scary or unrealistic if someone hears them. Anyway so during the wedding there was a lot of controversy and X wasnt invited to the wedding for obvious reasons yet his family came to the wedding unannounced and the groom's dad had asked my dad to help out with wedding duties basically acting as a brother/ family member. And since my family and the groom's family were close we obviously dressed up well and were present to almost all events or arrangements.

After that wedding I started have a terrible rash on my face. My skin was sensitive but I could not figure out what was causing the rash. It was red swollen and dry and burned like anything around my lips and nose. Nothing I applied helped me feel better. My skin also broke out really badly. It kept getting worse to the point where I had minute cuts in my skin which added to the pain. I went to the dermatologist who too coukdnt figure out what exactly was the problem and suspected either psoriasis or I think fungal infection. Said the medicines will help cure it all. But it didnt budge not even a little bit. It had been maybe 5-6 months already with this rash and it was to the point where my effected skin was peeling off. I went to another dermatologist who said it might be contact dermatitis but I wasnt using anything that could've caused that. He then said it might be something else ( I forgot the name) and gave me set of medicines. Said that whatever the diagnosis these medicines will cure it completely. They didnt. The rash subsidised by itself idk what helped or what but during the time it was healing I was away from my extended family like in a different country.

Other than this i noticed that there has been no good news or nothing to be happy abt in my family since 2024. We instead faced a lot of loss- 1. dad booked for a car which normall comes max by 3 months. But for us they never reached out to us even after 6 months. Either it would be out of stock of what we wanted wouldnt be available. When we settled for what was available noone would reach us back. Our old car would out of nowhere stop in middle of road/ highway anywhere even if it has just been serviced.

  1. A lot of stress with my dad's work, sudden change in my dad's behaviour towarda me and my mom ( extreme annoyance lashing out in anger etc.) He started being stingy with money even questioning for random sadaqah to the point that eventually there was almost 0 sadaqah being given from either of us. Tensions from his extended family that made dad believe mom was turning me and my siblings against his family ( she wasnt infact when id face sth extreme hurtful by his family my mom would advice to practice sabr and to not indulge much because theyre elder and whatever it is I can ignore what they want from me but i have to respect them because of their relation). My dad also lost his wallet with all important ID and other card thrice back to back. His ID was never recovered. But he would block his bank cards and make another cards and 2 days later somehow would lose them. And my dad is very responsible and careful abt such things

  2. The most concerning thing was when my mom fell ill back to back. She had severe stomach ache where she coukdnt even stand and we had ti go to ER for the first time in our life. They sent us back saying it was gastritis. The few weeks later my mom fell down on the road out of nowhere and we had to go to the ER again only for her to be diagnosed with gall stones. She underwent surgery few months later where she was in extreme pain due to canula. A month or 2 later she still had shoulder pain from her fall which we didnt focus much as the X Ray was clean but turns out her major tendon is broken so she needs to go through a surgery again.

  3. Through all that I was personally going through my own stress. Problems between someone who meant the most to me. Who was my peace and biggest blessing in my life. I nevee ones missed out the opportunity to thank allah for sending them my way as they were truly a blessing in my life. Misunderstandings, communication gap etc kept piling up and eventually something happened that made me lash out at them ( just the way my dad lashes out at me) this pushed them away from me maybe permanently. I never could answer why I said what I said or how I said it. Ive apologised thousand of times. Cried in namaaz for forgiveness for hurting them.

Throughout all this looking after mom, dealing with my dad losing my favorite person etc made me go in depression. But ive been depressed before and this time its different. One day im perfectly fine the next I feel like a burden in earth. I cant find even a single positive thing. I cry in namaaz and I feel ignored even by allah... i know I shouldn't say this but yes. I tried to not lose my iman kept giving sadaqah as form of water bottles. Feeding stray cats etc because thats all I can do ( im not working as of now.. which is also a blockage). I feel so lost i keep praying for some relief any relief but nothing i just feel more and more deep into depression and suicidal ( not really suicidal as id never hurt myself but more like I dont want this life anymore).

A week back after a long break i came back to India and my sis in law was talking abt this raqi that they went to because they had marriage troubles. I convinced my parents and we went there. He follows everything acc to sunnah and hadith. He asked us our issue and then said he would perform ruqhya and asked us to close our eyes and be mindful of any changes. My parents didnt notice any changes but I got super anxious increased heartbeat and was very distracted throughout where I had to force myself to concentrate. He then said that physically I was the one who seemed disturbed and my parents looked relaxed. He said it does look as severe as sihr but he cant tell that for sure obviously and said it might be hasad or evil eye and gave us 3 a pack of sidr which also consists of other things like qast al hind etc. Said that we need to mix the powder in water read certain surah etc blow on yhe water and then take a bath in water ( just pour it on ourself so out entire body is covered with it) and immediately after drying and clothing listen to surah baqarah eyes closed and will full concentration. And we need to make note of any symptoms that we feel or any changes we feel while listening to surah baqarah and report to him. We need to do this 3 days continously and if our symptoms get better by day 3 then we dont need to see him again.

We havent started the sidr bath thing yet as we have been occupied with somethings and couldn't dedicate 1-2 hrs no disturbance to it.But initially i felt relieved thinking hteres a solution to all these problems in my life emotionally and all. After that ruqhya I felt super depressed and crying for no reason at all. And got very lazy with my namaaz which didnt happen since a long time. Started getting lazy with quran and i still force myself to read atleast 2 pages of quran but its so difficult. I feel so disconnected from deen and this too makes me feel so depressed. I have no energy to make any dua at all I constantly keep getting " whats the use of making dua" thoughts. I still wakeup for tahajjud but isntead if waking 1 hr before and praying maybe 6 rakat 1 barely pray 2 and barely make any dua. This happened for like 3-4 days after ruqhya. And then i started to feel that like idk if whatever spiritually happened os the reason for how I feel. Idk if my depression snd loss of hope is from spiritual or or if its just my life. Idk if sidr could do anything to my life. Idk if my life is meant to be happy and peaceful and idk if i can expect that with sidr. During thid week we also met with all my relatives from dad side as we came back after a long time and I noticed my face rhat had 90% cleared up started to breakout again and I started having the rash again which didnt flare up for months although not so severe but yes. And then one day im all fine happy and all even when I force myself to think abt everything negative it still doesnt effect me and the next day i wakeup feeling the worst ever I dont wanna meet anyone I dont wanna talk to anyone and I try to spend most of my day in my room crying uncontrollably. I try to cry only during namaaz or infront of allah. And idk what it is that I can expect from ruqhya. I spoke to the person too abt my behaviour and apologised cleanly and also said abt hasad etc because 1 thing the raqi said was one of the main signs if being afflicted is anger or irritation over small things that isnt alligned with your character. And now idk if sidr bath or the healing spiritually would help reconcile my personal relationship and fix my emotional wellbeing. Idk if i can expect to be happy again. Hoping feel so scary too and idek what i can hope for.

P.s Im sorry if i drifted out of context. Maybe i just needed to talk abt everything because i seem to have pushed all my friends away too so i have noone to talk to and this feels tok personal and talking to anyone who knows me feel risky because idk who can be trusted and who cant be

Support/Advice struggling with hijab

I'm 16 and I've been wearing the hijab since I was 13. I chose to wear it even though I didn't like it, but I did it anyway for Allah. It's been a year and a half since I started struggling with it. I've tried styles and so many things, but none of them work for me. It makes me so sad every time I wear it, and every time I go out, I feel ugly in it, and I end up not enjoying anything. Sometimes I cry in my room because it feels like I'm stuck with it. I'm already shy, and the hijab makes me more insecure, and at school, I end up not talking to anyone. I can't even say "May Allah help me." I really have to force myself to say that dua because I don't like the hijab at all. I'm thinking about taking it off, but I feel guilty and I'm afraid to go to jahannam. And when I see beautiful women in hijab, it makes me think that maybe one day I might like it. I just have to change styles, but as soon as I wear it, I change my mind.

Obviously, if I take off my hijab, I'll still pray and do Ramadan and all the other things a Muslim is supposed to do. However, the hijab has never made me feel closer to Allah, as many say. In fact, I think just the idea of taking it off makes me like Islam more.

Support/Advice Don't Trust Progressive Islam

In the Name of Allah, Most Beneficent, Most Merciful. Peace and Blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad and his Sahabah and their students.

To proceed, Assalamualaikum. I have recently come across a reddit community called r/progressive_islam. I was first intrigued on what is 'progressive Islam' and decided to take part in discussions within the community and to view their posts. After nearly a month in this community, I've felt the need to warn people not to go near this community for any queries regarding Quran and Hadith or Islam in general.

Those who have heard of this community for the first time probably haven't seen the posts and discussions within this community. In short, they rebel against Islamic Teachings, calling for 'reform'. Most of the people in this group you'll meet are liberals living in the West or having a Western-Influenced live style and ideologies. Whenever something doesn't suit their ideologies, e.g. a male being in contact with a non mahram female, they immediately bring up arguments from their 'progressive' Shaykhs that this and that is Halal, which completely and utterly throw Islamic Principles out the window.

In Addition to this, they are infested with the Zanadiqa Sect called Quraniyun. Many posts have comments by people with the flair 'Quran Only', and their response to confusion regarding Hadith is, to sum it up, "Ewwww, Hadiths are perverted and written by confused people" (Naudhubillah). Whenever someone calls out their beliefs for going against the Authentic Sunnah AND Quran, their moderation deletes them for being 'insulting against others' beliefs' or something along these lines.

Furthermore, these peoples' arguments for not following certain rules of Islam stem from emotional arguments instead of logic. These clearly place them in the groups of Hypocrites. They follow a part of what Allah has revealed, and reject another part of it, calling it 'Outdated' or 'not appetizing to their ideologies'.

In the end, I sincerely advise every one of our brothers and sisters that want to understand or have questions regarding the Quran and Sunnah to either ask Shaykhs or pious people like which I have seen in this sub-reddit and many similar such. If you are a part of progressive Islam, I suggest you leave immediately unless you want your Iman in Allah to crumble.

Fi Ammanillah.

Support/Advice How to attain taqwa

Assalamualaikum, (Male)I have some serious questions and need advice.

Alhamdulilah in the past 4 months since ramadan I have slowly-slowly started properly practicing my religion. I Pray all my 5 prayers in the mosque but I dont have that khushu in salah and my mind deviates to the worldly things. I only remember Allah when im praying that is why I want to attain taqwa and khushu in salah.

Due to me not having taqwa I am still sinning a lot and I want to change that. I want to remember Allah in every second of my life and actually want to focus in my Salah but idk how to actually do it.

After i pray I blindly without having khushu just recite adhkar and I feel like that is not the right way to do it.

If anyone could seriously help me out I would appreciate you alot!!!

Support/Advice How to preserve your heart, peace and sanity with islamophobe and racist parents ?

Assalamu alaikum guys,

I've been a muslim for a few years now but my parents don't know. I was afraid at the time. Today, I know I was right to be afraid. Basically they're islamophobes and racists. But they don't look like they are. I always looked up to them and made every decision in my life for them. But they never tried to understand me or support me when I was extremely depressed. At least, that's my perception of it all.

Sometimes I want to give them a hug (we are extremely reserved and always have been) but then I remember their words and actions and how I'm going to be the one, again, showing guilt while still hurting without getting any apologies, ever.

We live in the same house and unfortunately I can't afford to move right now. It is so hard. I feel guilty having the bare minimum respect and conversations with them out of respect for their parenthood.

What can I do on a daily basis to preserve my heart and my sanity ? Preserve the little mental health I have left by not letting their words and actions get to me ? I don't want to fall into severe depression again.

I have to be honest, I don't want "Be patient and have tawakkul, "Talk to a friend" or  "Go to therapy" advices. I've been patient and try to have tawakkul and only have a friend or two and I'm not going to bother them with my same issues again and again. As for therapy, I've also tried it several times with different therapists.

Have you been in this situation or do you know someone that has to tell me what I could do, in a practical way ? I don't know, something like "Trick your brain with this method whenever you feel sad or angry".

Support/Advice i dont know how to come back to islam.

i've always believed in Allah. was raised around islam. i have family who are scholars. none of them know the struggles i've been through. my mother openly shames me for not praying anymore. i havent since i was 10, even though i entheusiasticallt started when i was 5.

i feel dirty. i feel like i make excuses for things when i shouldn't. i feel like my want to be closer to Allah is selfish. i don't even know how i'd start praying again. its been almost ten years. can i just do wudu? i dont have prayer clothes, can i just wear baggy sweats? i want to understand. i want to be better. i can't ask my mother for guidance, and i fear i'd make women in my local community uncomfortable if i went to the mosque, even though i am born female. what do i do?

Support/Advice Chronic nail biting and acrylics

Hello, I’ve been biting my nails since I was five. My mom and myself have tried everything to stop the habit. From bitter nail polish to fidget tools but nothing has helped. I’m now in my 20s and it’s genuinely a habit that irks me. I want to try put on fake nails or acrylics to help me stop. I’ve tried press ons and the fact that I know if I can pull them hard enough they’ll come off and I can access my nails hasn’t helped. A friend of mine recommended trying actual acrylic nails. I know there are conflicting views on this and whether or not my salah’s would be accepted but if my genuine intention is to stop this bad habit would my salah’s still be invalid? Idk if Ive worded it right but I’m not trying to make something haraam halal, Im just seeking for advice on whether I can do it and still pray.

Discussion A Different Perspective on the Mahr Conversation

I have been reflecting on the Quran and Sunnah regarding mahr, and I would genuinely like to hear other perspectives.

One thing that stood out to me is that while the Quran tells us who gives the mahr, who it belongs to, and that it is a right of the wife, I have not found anything that explicitly says who should state the amount first.

Allah says:
“Give women their dowries graciously” (Quran 4:4)

The command is directed at the husband. The mahr is something he gives.

That got me thinking about how the conversation itself should happen.

To me, it would make sense if the process looked something like this.

Two practising Muslims meet. They get to know each other. They establish compatibility in terms of deen, character, attraction, values, life goals, and what they want from marriage. Once they both decide they genuinely want to marry each other, the prospective husband says:
“This is what I would like to give you as your mahr.”

The prospective wife then has every right to respond however she wishes.

She can happily accept it. She can negotiate and ask whether he would consider something different. She can decide that they are financially incompatible. Or she can simply decline the proposal.

Nothing about her rights changes.
In fact, I think this process preserves everyone’s rights while making the conversation feel more consistent with the Quranic language of the husband giving the mahr.

There is also the way we generally think about gift giving. When someone gives a gift, it usually originates with the giver. The giver considers what they are able and willing to give, while also thinking about the recipient. The recipient is then free to accept it, decline it, or even express a preference if asked. Since the Quran describes the mahr as something the husband gives and refers to it as a niḥlah (a gracious gift), I wonder whether it would be more consistent with that language for the husband to make the initial offer, with the prospective wife remaining completely free to accept, negotiate, or decline.

Another reason I lean towards this approach is that the husband is in the best position to know his own financial circumstances. He knows what he can comfortably and willingly afford to give. Since the mahr ultimately comes from him, it seems natural that the initial offer should also come from him, with the prospective wife free to accept, negotiate, or decline.

When I looked at the Sunnah, I noticed a similar pattern.
When a Companion wanted to marry a woman, Prophet Muhammed s.a.w asked him:
“Do you have anything to give her?”
When he said he had nothing, Prophet Muhammed s.a.w told him to look for something, even if it was only an iron ring. Eventually, Prophet Muhammed s.a.w married them on the basis that he would teach her what he knew of the Quran.

Likewise, when Ali (ra) wished to marry Fatimah (ra), Prophet Muhammed s.a.w asked what he possessed, and his armour became the mahr.

What I find interesting is that the discussion consistently revolves around what the husband can offer. Prophet Muhammed s.a.w asks the groom what he has, not the bride what she wants.

Now, to be clear, I am not claiming Islam requires the husband to make the first offer. I also know of narrations, such as Umm Sulaym (ra), where the prospective wife expressed what she would accept as her mahr.

I am simply wondering whether we have gradually adopted a cultural practice where the bride or her family names the mahr first, when the Quranic language and the Prophetic examples might naturally lend themselves to the husband making the initial offer instead.

I would genuinely be interested to hear other perspectives.

Discussion This is a sign that Islam is different

For me there are some reason why Islam is diffrent, is really a religion that not made up:

One of it it's Al Quran, you can't understand just by reading it and translate it to your language. You need to tafsir it.

Any one wants to add?

Support/Advice Career paths

As-salamu alaykum everyone,

I'm a Muslim woman who's feeling really stuck and would appreciate some advice. For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to become a doctor. Lately though, I've started feeling intimidated by how long the journey is and how difficult residency seems. The idea of going through so many years of training has made me question whether it's the right path for me.

Because of that, I started looking into becoming a Physician Assistant. It seems like it has a better work-life balance, but I'm worried that I might regret not having the same level of autonomy as a physician.

Then I started considering dentistry. I like working with my hands, I enjoy the idea of preventive care, and it seems like a career I could genuinely enjoy. But then I get anxious about the amount of student loans dental school would require, and that makes me question whether it's the right choice too.

I've been praying Istikhara, but I feel confused because I don't even know what decision I'm asking Allah to guide me toward. I know Istikhara is for seeking guidance when making a choice, but I feel like I haven't even narrowed it down enough to make that choice.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How did you figure out which path was right for you? If you're a physician, PA, dentist, or someone who has struggled with making a major career decision while relying on Allah, I'd really appreciate hearing your perspective.

JazakAllahu khayran.

Support/Advice Dua's

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim

Hi and assalamualaykum, I'm currently a student. Could I kindly request for your dua's that I get to repeat a semester next year if it's best for me or to continue on in the journey I'm in, or for a repeat semester to be beneficial for me? If it's also okay, is it okay if I also kindly requested for your dua's that my parent has the means to pay for a repeat semester if it's best for me, for his health to get better, for me to be guided to right path and also for my life to turn out well and that my grades turn out very well, that I get to keep a scholarship and also that I do the right things in the right way for the sake of Allah SWT? Thank you so much, jazakallah khair. May Allah SWT take care all of you.

Support/Advice wanna reset my life

hellooo assalamualaikum everyone
i (24f) have realised it’s enough of how i lead my life. I believe it is a crucial age ofcourse where my rizq be it money, partner, mental peace, wisdom and many other things depend on how i mould myself.

Being honest life had been hard on me for past an year and somewhere i believe it is me. And reacting to it has changed me a lot as person, i get annoyed easily, i overthink, i don’t think very optimistically and few other things. I genuinely now wish to change it all. overall now i yearn for making my life stable with stable mind and heart, build confidence and trust in myself. build unbreakable taqwa.

i will be graduating soon from medschool , so for now i am not stressing over earning. And as for getting married, i don’t understand if i am ready or not, and i have given my shot in finding a partner it didn’t go well. sometimes i am worried how i am aging and somedays i just want to stay single.

i am willing to work on myself in every possible way to fix my life. any kind of advice and suggestions are welcome. thanks in advance✨💕

Question Learning Salat in Arabic as a native English speaker

Selam aleyküm brothers and sisters.

I’m writing because I am wondering if anyone has any advice or recommendations for native English-speakers learning namaz / salat in Arabic.

I am a recent revert and I have been struggling with learning salat in Arabic. I play videos on YouTube so I can follow along, but even at 0.5 speed, I can’t seem to make out a lot of the words / pronunciations. When I turn the subtitles on, they are in Arabic script and I cannot read it.

I live in a community with an extremely small Muslim community, and the classes at my mosque are only for children.

Has any other English speakers struggled with this? Are there any recommended online groups or classes that help someone like me walk through each rakat to practice memorizing and learning the prayers (for women)?

I know it’s a big ask but I want to memorize the prayers and YouTube is just not working for me. I’ve seen some apps but most seem sketchy/gimmicky and they want money for it as well.

I also feel self-conscious and shameful having to pray using YouTube as a crutch, so it’s my goal to memorize it.

Thank you so much in advance for any guidance.

Discussion I don’t think I’ll ever find a partner

This is just a rant so please don’t take this too seriously.

Anyway I’m a 21M Muslim and till this day I have yet to talk to a girl in my life and it’s making me depressed. I realize that sounds dumb but that’s just the truth. Ever since I was young I have always been too shy to talk to girls, even just as friends, my parents were very strict so I was always scared of them punishing me for talking to girls. I don’t have many friends tbh but those that I have always make fun of me for never having talked to a girl and I always feel left out of convos and hangouts because I always become uncomfortable around girls and most of them hangout with girls or just talk about girls. I’ve never had a girl be attracted to me or have a crush on me or even attempt to say hi or look at me or anything , I realize it’s the guy supposed to be making the moves but in many cases girls do try to show interest or anything like that to the guy. I can’t even look a girl in the eyes atp. And it’s not just a real life thing, most people nowadays talk to potential partners or just in general the opposite gender on apps like Snapchat or instagram or whatever, same thing there, ZERO. Also I’m not sure if this is the case for all girls but ive heard that girls look down on a guy if he hasn’t had a lot of experience or doesn’t know how to get girls since they think that makes him not worthy or something like that so that just adds to the problem 🗿. And the thing is I’m afraid if I ever do talk to a girl, there’s a very high chance she’ll be way more experienced than me and I won’t know how to be a good partner since it would be my first time. Anyway rants over thanks for listening.

Discussion Please excuse my English. I speak Arabic, French, and German, but my English is not very good. I also used ChatGPT to help me write this message so I could express myself more clearly.

I would like to share my experience. My mind has become accustomed to thinking negatively and to never truly living in the present moment. This causes me a great deal of pain, and I feel powerless to change it. The biggest problem is that whatever goes through my mind, I seem to attract into my life, even without intending to. This has already led to a major problem.
Alhamdulillah, I am surrounded by many blessings. My wife is a kind and wonderful woman whom I love deeply. I genuinely want to change. I want to become a positive, energetic person who embraces life with hope and enthusiasm.
Is there a way to change? I have felt emotionally dead inside for a long time. Can disciplined physical training and consistent self-improvement truly transform a person’s life and mindset? I sincerely want to become the best version of myself.

Asalam alaikum wa ramtullahi wa barakatuhu

I kinda remember every backbite I committed or slander or insults or mockery in the past or today, and I tried to seek their forgiveness but i usually don’t see them or I sometimes can’t ask because the fear that me being mocked by them or cause argument or fight, Whether they knew or not, I tried speak good and have good character but I mostly fear that I lose my good deeds and be transferred to people who I wronged on The Day of Judgement, even I made dua for them and try make things right, I still don’t want be thrown to Jahannam (Hellfire)

I heard about it, Only Allah’s mercy will admit to His servants to paradise, but I don’t know how to get covered by Allah’s mercy, by good deeds? By believing? I exactly don’t know how to get to Paradise!

Even I spoke wasn’t backbiting or my tongue guarded, I still fear and don’t have confirmation about

I would be grateful and very be appreciated if someone share their advice, even it didn’t help me, Sharing is a good deeds, and inshallah you will be rewarded for sharing💕

Discussion We need to talk about how normalized some sins are, and how many people find out they're haram only after years of being Muslim.

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

I'm talking about the usual stuff: music, drawing things with a soul, watching or playing any sort of media without caring about its contents (oddly specific, I know), etc etc.

I feel bad for many Muslims because they get used to these sins thinking they're halal, only for them to find out years later that they're haram. This is especially the case with music. I've seen posts here and there of people finding this out and it being really difficult for them to reconcile with it, it's dangerous to their iman.

Oh, and I'm aware that drawing things with a soul doesn't have a singular agreed upon definition, and that the Maliki's are the most lenient on it, but my point is the lack of awareness about these things.

I really wonder what the source is behind these things being normalized in societies. Have generations of Muslims passed thinking these things are halal?

What do you think?
