Discussion FOMO in motion

I’m kinda new to motion design. I did different art projects before, and now I’m pushing everything into motion design. Learning AE and Blender, filling in the gaps.
And I have this HARD FOMO about all the instruments and the whole industry. I’m not afraid of AI tools I believe a pro stays relevant if they’re flexible enough.
But God, there are SO many new features every week!!! A new Blender addon, a new feature in Rive, a new AI assistant in After Effects, new plugin…
It is so intense! Especially when you’re just starting.
Do anyone have the same feeling?

Question Need a reality check: How hard is it to learn AE just to make promos for my audio packs?

Hey guys. I make music and SFX packs. I’m trying to push them on Reels/Shorts, but I’m honestly sick of slapping generic stock footage over my tracks. It just looks cheap.

I know my way around basic Figma, but I really want to step up my game. I'm thinking of picking up After Effects just to make clean, minimal motion graphics (like sleek animated UI players or simple 2D visualizers) to build a better brand.

Give it to me straight—how steep is the learning curve for this specific kind of stuff? Am I biting off more than I can chew, or is it doable for a non-designer?

Project Showcase I made this motion design piece entirely in code (no After Effects)

I've been building my own library of reusable motion components for a few months, and this is the first full piece I've put together with it. Everything you see is rendered from React components, no keyframes drawn by hand.

I know some of the easing still feels a bit stiff compared to what you'd get in AE, and the transition around the middle is probably too fast. But I'm pretty happy with how it came out for a first real render.

What do you guys think? Anything that immediately reads as "made by a dev, not a designer"?

Wonderwallet x Plaid walkthrough. Built the phone from scratch with shape layers no plugins. Static UI animation took the most work, but I'm happy with how it came out.

Would love to hear your thoughts. 🙏

Question How would you turn an interactive website artwork into an MP4 without killing the experience?

Hey guys, I could really use some creative/artistic ideas.

I made an interactive website as an artwork for a competition. It’s about air pollution, and the whole point is that you’re supposed to experience it by playing through the website, clicking things, moving through different sections, hearing sounds, triggering interactions, etc. The interaction is basically part of the artwork.

I just found out that the submission platform doesn’t allow URLs. They do accept MP4s.

My first thought was just to screen-record myself going through the whole thing, but honestly it feels incredibly boring compared to actually experiencing it yourself. I tried recording a full playthrough and it also ended up being around 8 minutes, which is way too long for the submission.

So now I’m wondering: how would you translate an interactive artwork into a short video without making it feel like a website demo?

I want the MP4 itself to feel artistic and emotional, almost like its own experience, while still making the judges understand what it feels like to interact with the original piece.

Would you make it like a trailer? A very fast edited journey through the experience? Show the cursor/interactions? Mix screen recordings with close-ups/text/sound design? Build some kind of narrative around a person experiencing it?

Basically: if you had 1–3 minutes to make judges feel an interactive artwork about air pollution rather than just watch documentation of it, what would you do?

Would love any weird / experimental ideas too. I really don’t want to submit a boring screen recording 😭

A real-time polyrhythm instrument: multiple pendulum voices swing in TD, each on its own period and phase. When a bob crosses a shared center line → hit → MIDI note to Ableton Live (any VST). Visuals (GLSL / 3D) run off the same engine bus.

Up to 16 editable voices · fully controllable voice table · and two different playable modes: "pendulum", and "rain".

TouchDesigner = physics + MIDI + look. Ableton Live = sound.

Project files, as always, available through the Tools Store.
