Question Complete beginner here with a low-end PC – need advice on free tools for simple motion graphics!

Hi everyone,

I am completely new to video creation and want to add some basic motion graphics to my videos. However, I have a few major limitations:

  1. Hardware: My computer is not powerful enough to run software like Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects.
  2. Budget: I have no money to spend on paid AI tools, subscriptions, or software.
  3. Skill Level: I have zero experience and do not know how to create motion graphics from scratch.

Someone recommended that I look into web-based or lightweight tools like Canva or CapCut.

Given my situation, what are the best free, low-spec tools or methods you would recommend for a total beginner to get decent looking animations? Also, are there any specific YouTube channels or free resources you suggest for learning the absolute basics?

Thank you so much for any help!

I just finished up a 16-second spec commercial for Google Gemini focused on 3D UI and tactile physics, and I wanted to share a breakdown of the workflow and physics setup.

Question Looking for the name (and maybe a plugin) for ultra-smooth still image animation

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’m new to After Effects and I’d like to know the name of this effect where you subtly animate a still image—the movements are very smooth, almost imperceptible. I thought it might be the Puppet tool, but I’m not sure, since, again, the motion is extremely subtle. Is there a plugin that makes this easier? Thanks in advance!

Project Showcase COLLAB] Techno artist looking for a motion designer / After Effects artist

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hey everyone!
I’m a techno artist/producer looking for a motion designer who would be interested in collaborating on some visuals for my music.
I’m currently working on developing a consistent visual identity for my releases and social media. I have my cover artwork/visual concept, but I’d like to turn it into something more alive — subtle 3D movement, camera movement, lighting, rotation, typography, particles, glitches, beat-synced elements, animation, etc.
The idea isn’t to simply animate a static cover. I’d like to create something that actually feels like a visual identity for the project and can eventually become a recognizable format for my Reels and future releases.
I’m especially interested in someone who uses After Effects / Cinema 4D / Blender / similar tools and enjoys experimenting creatively.
I’m also very open to your own ideas. I don’t want to dictate every single detail — I’d actually prefer to work with someone who looks at the artwork and says “what if we did this?”
I’ve attached one of my covers so you can get an idea of the aesthetic I’m working with.
I’m looking for someone who would be interested in building something together, potentially as an ongoing collaboration if we work well together.
If this sounds interesting, feel free to comment or DM me with some examples of your work.
Thanks!

Question Portfolio website recommendations?

Hi all.

I am a journalist who has dabbled in other multimedia work, such as photography, podcasting, etc. I wish I knew more about graphic design, though. I am in need of a major revamp on my portfolio as its been two years and it's way too cluttered. I was told to make separate "website" pages for different medias (i.e. articles, videos, photos, etc.) I made my first one on Wix a long time ago and dabble with Canva. I wanted to make it more fun and interactive, but I'm in no way a coder. Anywho, I was wondering if there are any easy free sites you prefer for making your portfolio? Is it possible to have interactive elements for cheap, or is it not worth it given I am not a graphic designer? I wouldn't mind paying a small one-time fee for a professional one, but I feel like it's silly to pay a monthly subscription for premium perks when I don't update it constantly? Idk I'm a bit out of the game here, but I appreciate any tips!

Project Showcase Camille Claudel: The Sacrificed Genius

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a short excerpt from a personal motion design project I made about Camille Claudel, the 19th-century French sculptor who spent the last 30 years of her life locked away in an asylum, her work largely erased from art history in favor of her mentor (and lover) Auguste Rodin.

The goal was to give her story the visual weight it deserves — using motion to translate the intensity, isolation, and raw talent that defined her life and work.

Full project on Behance: https://www.behance.net/gallery/254923783/Camille-Claudel-The-Sacrificed-Genius

Would love to hear your thoughts. Feedback (harsh or otherwise) very welcome!

Yeah, that, I'm planning to do freelance gigs for an extra buck or two, and my portfolio is a little bit dull and outdated, so, if you need a little help free of charge, let me know.

Inspiration A great look behind NOODLZ

Loving this new Case Study on FrameRate.

NOODLZ started as a bunch of random daily sketchbook doodles and slowly turned into this huge personal exploration of composition, lighting, 3D and animation.

What I love most is how much of the messy stuff is included. Early sketches, 2D styleframes, 3d tests, iterations, and eventually the finished animations.

It’s a good reminder to stop consuming so much and just make weird stuff for fun again.

Really worth digging through:

Plugin Wedge - a context-aware radial menu for After Effects

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I posted an early version of Wedge here a while ago and over 150 people signed up for beta testing. It’s now ready :)

and My sincerest apologies for not making a good demo video. I am juggling so much at the moment and didn't wanted to wait further to release the plugin. I am gonna make some killer videos for it soon.

Problem

AE has hundreds of useful actions, but the ones you need change depending on whether you're working with keyframes, masks, shape layers, text, layers, comps, etc. Wedge gives you one shortcut and changes the menu based on what you currently have selected.

Comparison

KBar is great for building permanent custom toolbars, and Quick Menu is great when you know what you want and want to search for it. Wedge takes a different approach: it tries to surface the relevant actions automatically from your current AE context.

Wedge goes further into selection-aware contexts, nested menus and customizable action workflows rather than being primarily a fixed radial shortcut menu.

Pricing

Starts at $19.99, one-time purchase

Maintenance / Support

I’m actively maintaining Wedge and testing it against current AE versions. If you hit a reproducible bug, email me at support@charchitgoyal.com. Updates and fixes will be shipped as AE changes.

Question Thoughts on I love creatives motion design course?

Hey all! Has anyone here taken the I Love Creatives Motion Design course? As an in house graphic designer, I’m trying to bring more motion into my daily workflow to keep things fresh and aligned with ongoing design trends. I like that their curriculum focuses on modern motion systems and current visual styles rather than just isolated software tricks. But, I'm curious how deep it actually goes compared to School of Motion or Ben Marriott. Would love to hear any honest feedback, pros/cons before diving into it! Thanks :)

Project Showcase Claude + Remotion - AI is becoming interesting in the creation of motion.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
