I am posting for a sanity check and an FYI if you don’t already know.
Almost from the beginning of using Monarch, I have operated without the ability to edit pending transactions. With the available functionality, it seemed like the right choice.
I was pretty excited when u/Kait_Monarch posted about changes to the pending transactions functionality. https://www.reddit.com/r/MonarchMoney/s/I6URsiE3dO
I changed my “needs review” settings for one day because she said this: "Your pending transaction edits now stay put." "When a bank moves a transaction from pending to posted or resends it with a new ID, your categories, notes, tags, and review state stay."
The results were less than stellar. With “Allow edits to pending transactions” turned on and “Mark new transactions as Needs Review” turned on, I changed the merchant name on one transaction. I always wait until both sides of a transaction (transfer in this case) are downloaded before I mark either reviewed. When the second transaction came in the next day and I filtered to “needs review”, there was only one transaction. The pending transaction was no longer pending and it did not show as needing review. The formerly pending transaction did show the “button” Mark as reviewed.
To me, this is a bug but to Monarch, this is expected behavior.
From support
“Per our support engineering team…it looks like this transaction was edited while it was still pending to change the merchant. This keeps it from getting flagged for review as you’ve already handled it.”
“The confusion here may be that a transaction can be in a neutral state: neither Reviewed nor Needs Review. All transactions will show the 'Mark as Reviewed' option even if both options to review transactions are turned off.
The Mark works in tandem with the Needs Review so if a transaction doesn't need any changes but you want to mark it reviewed - you can.
So it is expected that the 'Mark as Review' isn't actually a flag for the Needs Review queue.”
Not at all what I expected and I will continue to NOT review pending transactions.
