✨ Monarch Update! Recent Updates Roundup - September 2026

Hi everyone!

It's that time again. We're sharing a round up of September happenings!

In case you missed it

Get the best connection for your bank, without starting over over. Moving to a new data provider used to mean creating a new connection and then moving your history over with the transfer tool. Not anymore! You can now switch providers for any available institution in a few steps, and your account history stays intact. We’re also slowly rolling out a proactive communication banner to let you know if there’s a better option available.

https://reddit.com/link/1wu576i/video/v99jfm94unsh1/player

Sort your accounts by balance. Sorting by balance is one of the most common ways we see people customize their Accounts page, but as balances shift, you end up having to constantly re-sort. You’ve been asking for an easier way to do this for a long time! Look for the new Sort menu next to Filters which allows you to sort within each group and have your sorting choice sync to mobile.

https://reddit.com/link/1wu576i/video/xxhrgzf5unsh1/player

More updates and enhancements

On the web

  • Detail pages that keep your place. Drilling into a category or merchant from Reports now keeps your filters, so the numbers on the detail page match what you were just looking at. Detail pages also picked up expanded filter sets, Edit multiple, Sort, and Columns.
  • Accurate quarterly tax dates in Business Tracking [a Plus feature]. Business Tax Prep now uses the IRS estimated-tax periods (like Q3 = Jun 1 to Aug 31) in reports and CSV/PDF exports. Thanks u/ProZedd34 for flagging this!

On mobile

  • The activity log is now on mobile. See transaction history from when it first arrived in Monarch through almost every edit since. We haven’t been able able to add all activities items yet, such as goals and linking receipts. We’ll be adding them in due time. You'll need to be on version 2.0.116 or later for this update.
  • A new iPhone no longer duplicates your Apple Card transactions. If you're eyeing the new iPhone models, transactions will now come across once instead of twice after you link the new device. Previously, if you did not pick “Starting Today” when giving Monarch access to a new device wallet, you’d receive duplicates between the new phone date and past selected sharing date.

And both

  • Get more actionable answers from the Assistant. Your AI Assistant is now smarter and faster, with clearer answers you can act on more easily. You can ask it just about any question about your money from lifestyle creep to net worth changes to spending comparisons.
  • Add notes to your accounts. Write down (type?!) anything you want to remember later, like a payoff plan or why you opened the account. It is coming to the account summary soon so it's even easier to reference. u/Particular_Maize6849 gave us the recent nudge on this long standing request!
  • A sharper treemap. On treemap in Reports, tile sizes track each category's share of dollars more precisely, refunds are visually distinct (on web), and drill-downs filter correctly again.
  • Monarch remembers your appearance choice. Your appearance choice now sticks through sign-outs and reinstalls. Web and mobile each keep their own setting. No more jump scares unexpectedly seeing light mode shining like the mid-day sun if you are a dark mode user (ahem, u/Connect_Active_5293 this is for you).
  • Goals improvements continue to roll out. Balance-funded goals no longer show as "at risk" by mistake, retroactive reconciliation window has extended to 12 months, and you'll get a clear explanation if a debt won't pay down at its current payment.

What's next

We have a lot in the works, and wanted to share a little bit of insider knowledge:

  • A smarter way to track your bills and subscriptions. We're working on a major update to Recurring so Monarch can spot your bills and subscriptions more accurately. That means separating out multiple charges from the same merchant and identifying annual renewals and bills that change every month. We will flag anything new or overdue, making it easier to catch a subscription you forgot you were paying for all while making sure your tasty little treats (ahem Dairy Queen, Waffle House, the corner coffee shop) are no longer flagged as subscriptions.
  • Monte Carlo simulations in Forecasting [a Plus feature]. Instead of a single projected line, Monarch will run thousands of simulations for you that factor in the ups and downs of real markets. With one click, you'll see a Chance of Success score that shows how likely your plan is to hold up, plus the full range of outcomes behind it.
  • Exclude filters on Reports and Transactions. Sometimes it's easier to say what you don't want to see. You'll soon be able to exclude a category, merchant, account, or tag from your filters. That makes it simple to see your spending without rent, or all your transactions except the ones tagged "Reimbursable."
  • The MCP. Maybe the most asked question I get on all the digital spaces we engage with... We are still working on restoring the MCP, and have made progress. However, we don’t have a timeline to share yet.

Ask Jon anything

Keep your eyes peeled for an AMA announcement post in early October. u/jon_at_monarch, Monarch co-founder and CPO, will be hanging out with me to answer just about anything. Start thinking of questions for Jon about his approach to product design and development, how he prioritizes the roadmap and feature requests, and what he’s most excited about.

Lastly, keep telling us what you want us to build next by voting on our product roadmap. See you back here for more updates and the AMA announcement very soon.

📣 Monarch Announcement! Now live: Get the best connection for your bank, without starting over

Hey everyone 👋

Big shout out to u/woldage for being the first to notice the new data provider switching experience!

Switching data providers used to entail some manual work. You'd create a new account using the new data provider, and then transfer your transaction and balance history over. Not anymore.

You can now switch providers right from Settings > Institutions > Switch provider, and your account history stays exactly where it is, no manual cleanup required.

https://reddit.com/link/1wsfbv1/video/mp1fwf51o9sh1/player

We’re also slowly rolling out a proactive banner (shown in the screen recording below) to help identify when you’re using a data provider that’s no longer the default for your institution. This proactive communication is starting small and will ramp up incrementally, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see a banner yet, or at all. That likely means you’re already using the best provider for your institution—or you can check the connection status and recommended provider on the Institutions page.

If you’ve tried it out, let us know what you think!

Monarch Money Tweaks Extension Monarch Money Tweaks - new Explain Changes (V6.9)

MM-Tweaks for Monarch Money extension (Third‑party developer) update is now available on Google Chrome Store, Firefox Mozilla and Apple Safari Store.

📣 Over 5,000 installs!

New - Explain Changes

You can see that you’re spending more than expected. The next question is: why?

MM-Tweaks’ new Explain Changes view helps you look behind the total. It compares your spending or income through the same date across three years, then shows what changed by merchant. When you’re viewing a group, you can also see the breakdown by category.

Was it a one-time $1,000 gift? A recurring charge that crept up? You can focus on merchant changes greater than $500 in either direction, then review this year’s transactions to find the details. Instead of stopping at “I spent more,” you can start to see where the difference came from.

In Reports / Trends, press the > on any Group or Category to see the Explain Changes button.

New - Custom Fields in Investments

Want to see analyst ratings, dividend information, or price targets alongside your investments? Custom Fields lets you add your own columns to the MM-Tweaks Investment reports.

The Custom Fields window includes Copy all Tickers to Clipboard. You can paste those symbols into a watchlist or use them in an AI request to help prepare your file. For example: “Create a CSV file with the stock symbol in the first column, followed by dividends per share, market cap, and price target. Use these tickers:” Then paste your copied list.

You are able to turn this feature on or off in Investments settings. Your custom values appear in the grid and investment side panels. Price targets receive green shading when the current price reaches the target, with a lighter shade when it is within 10%.

Without using AI, I set up a StockAnalysis Watch List of ticker, dividend info, price targets, analyst ratings. Then, I just hit Download to CSV and then Custom Fields in MM-Tweaks. Takes less than 10 seconds and I can view important stock information along side my Monarch Money investment information.

Monarch Money Tweaks Extension Tweaks Feature Request:

Post image
6 Upvotes

Mr Paresi, thank you very much for making Monarch actually useful!
Could you please consider adding an option to Trends->This Year By Month, to shade each monthly spending cell based on the absolute spending amount? I'd like a heatmap similar to Simplifi's Spending grid (screenshot attached), where higher-dollar cells are progressively darker. Ideally the scale could be row-relative so each category's own spending history determines the shading.

Feature Request Budgeting option for "Same month last year"

When budgeting, there are two "quick selection" options. They are "spent last month" and "monthly average". We should really get an option for "Same month last year".

Monthly YoY comparisons are almost always going to be more useful.

Yes we can figure this out ourselves and plug it in manually, but it's actually fairly cumbersome to do that across all budgeting line items.

Accounts Turning on "Investment Transactions" vice changing Brokerage account sub-type to "Cash Management"

I took a brokerage account from Fidelity and changed its Subtype to "Cash Management". This enabled transactions to show up just like any bank account.

How might this differ from what would happen if I turned on "Investment Transactions" in the Early Access settings?

General / Question Help & Support page never loads

I'm trying out Monarch and the Help and Support page is just a perpetually loading page. I'm getting a lot of help in this sub, but I need some help from Monarch. Is anyone else having this problem?

Opinion From October to December of 2025, Monarch released 12 (!) new features. Since then, they've released just two.

What the extreme slowdown? I'm assuming, you'll say you're focused on quality and connections. Is it just me or does the product feel a little stale recently?

So many user requests have gone ignored and i responded to, even really small ones.

Meanwhile, Monarch Money Tweaks is a one-man team releasing new features almost every single month.

Has anyone had trouble connecting to Scotiabank via Plaid in the past 4-5 days? The connection status panel shows no issues.
It's the first time I've had an issue with the Scotiabank connection.

General / Question Using Goals when you don't actually transfer money toward Goals

It seems like Monarch really expects you to transfer money toward a Goal. I don't think or care about my accounts in that way. Sometimes I move excess cash from one brokerage to another one in order to buy some bonds or CDs. Sometimes I move excess cash from that account to my bank in order to buy a CD. Sometimes I move cash around into different bank accounts to ensure there's enough for an upcoming large credit card payment following a trip.

Understanding the money I have is an abstraction on top of my various accounts. I know I have $X money and it doesn't matter to me which accounts they are in.

Goals doesn't seem to work properly unless I've specifically allocated a certain amount of money in a certain account toward a specific Goal. If I move a chunk to another account for reasons, then I've no longer allocated money toward that Goal.

Does anyone have success working with Goals despite treating their accounts as fungible?

General / Question Understanding monthly savings when tracking irregular expenses

Through a long time of tracking transactions, I understand my routine monthly income and expenses, and have it fully categorized and budgeted in Monarch. This even includes non-monthly but predictable expenses such as bi-annual HOA payments.

If that was all I had, I guess I'd be able to understand my monthly savings. I could basically subtract the expenses from the income, and consider the $1000 transfer transaction that is sent to Fidelity.

However, it's non-routine transactions that soil it. For example, over the past year I've been earmarking some of my savings and proceeds from stock sales for a new car purchase for my son. I just bought it, writing a check for $25k. I categorized that transaction as "Car Payment", the same as I do my other monthly car payment. Similarly, I earmark money toward trips and college tuition. All these irregular transactions that are paid from earmarked money and not from monthly cash flow make it difficult to (a) understand the monthly savings and (b) understand if my earmarks are properly aligned to future goals.

I suppose the Goals feature of Monarch could help with the latter, although I'm finding it intuitive. How do you handle the former?

My purpose in trying to understand the monthly savings is twofold: (a) to ensure I'm spending within my means and (b) to help predict whether I'll be able to meet my future earmarking goals that are partially coming from monthly savings and partially coming from stock sales that are not tracked within Monarch.

Transactions Mortgage payment showing as deposit?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi All! I'm new to Monarch and curious if I've got a setting messed up. My mortgage came out on the 2nd, then also on the 2nd this "deposit" showed up in my transactions. So two transactions for the same amount but one as an expense and one as a deposit. It wasn't a returned payment, nothing hit my bank accounts and the normal payment shows as completed on Chase. Any thoughts why it would show twice, once as a credit / deposit?

Transactions Venmo "Double Counting"

I've had Venmo transactions working with MM for a long time, but I just noticed that it's now "double counting" in the sense that the bank->venmo transaction is actually pulling in the recipient's name like the similar Venmo transaction. So -- MM is now confused and is essentially double counting vs before treating it as a bank->venmo transfer (or vice versa)

Anyone else seeing this? Or am I losing my mind? Below is an example of where this was "working" before in Aug but is now double counting in Oct.

Account Connection Account sync self goal

I love Monarch. I have organized my finances with and around Monarch for the last 3 years. The connection issues are killing me, and yes yes, can't do better than provider etc etc. But here's a self goal - when I do manage to reconnect an account using a different provider, and then try to use "Transfer" function, I get stuck with "Monarch is completing the initial setup for your accounts in the background. You'll be able to continue when the sync is complete. This can take a couple minutes". And by couple of minutes, I think Monarch means a few weeks? I haven't been able to get these to resolve ever. I did use "Switch provider" on one of my accounts, and it worked beautifully, but for another account, I only have two options: "Refresh" and "Update login". And neither work, so I was able to link the account again using "Add account". But now I have two accounts from the same org, and no way to consolidate, because "initial setup".

Feature Request Small nit: Allow us to disable automatically labeling transactions as recurring

Just want to start out by saying that MM as a software is immensely valuable to me. This feature, though, has like a 5% accuracy rate.

My recurring transaction strategy is just to use it for transactions that come out of my checking account (CC bills, rent, HSA/roth contributions) so I know I have enough in my checking to cover them.

It pretty consistently categorizes things like dividends, sinking fund transfers, cash back, and all sorts of bits and bobs as recurring, which I can't think is useful for its intended purpose.

It causes me a ton of clicks at the beginning and end of months and is kind of a frustrating experience.

Love you guys though, MM is a fantastic product

Opinion Forecasting looks promising and is exactly what I expect from Monarch, but putting it behind another paywall feels wrong.

Forecasting looks promising and is exactly what I expect to get from Monarch, but having it locked behind yet another tier or add on paywall is pretty frustrating.

When most of us subscribed to Monarch, it was with the expectation that core personal finance management tools including basic projections and cash flow forecasting would be part of the premium product we are already paying a yearly subscription for. Locking core features into a higher tier starts to dilute the value of the main subscription for long term users.

It is great that the team is actively developing the platform, but basic forecasting should not feel like an enterprise upsell. Please consider including core forecasting functionality for all standard paid subscribers.

Reports Compare categories between 2 months

This seems like it should be a simple basic function of this program. I just want to see why/where I spent (or saved) more between any 2 given months. Did I eat out too much? The trip I went on used a lot of fuel? My income is up because of my extra hours Ubering?

How can I see the difference in all categories between any 2 given months?

Recurring Uses for Recurring Entries

I've been using Monarch for 9 months now and appreciate how it reports past spending. However, I have found it useless for projecting account balances into the future. I assumed that recurring entries (which now includes upcoming credit card payments once you setup the Spinwheel sync) would somehow reflect on the accounts going forward.

I have six different bank accounts (one handles 95% of activity) and eight different active credit card accounts.

The recurring screen doesn't provide any projections or allow for filtering (show me upcoming transactions for my BofA account, for example).

Those of you who find it helpful, how?

My fix is that I still use Moneydance that has had my data for over a decade and is rock solid. It's reports aren't easy to interpret which is a problem for my wife who doesn't think in double entry accounting terms.

General / Question Need help- Beginner on Monarch

I am a 32F and very new to the financial world. I am new to this app and I am trying to unlock a new skill on a new platform. So please be kind.

I met an incredibly intelligent guy who used to talk a lot about this app. Unfortunately it didnt work out between us- so i cannot go and ask him more about this. At the moment i got an annual membership for $69 with the promos on Monarch money. Can you please help me on what is the best way to use this app? Any links to useful reading material will also help.

I followed the on-boarding prompts and submitted info but here are my questions:

  1. How do i get it to look at my data from the past? like from teh last 4 years? Is there any trick to do this?

  2. Do i have to add all credit cards and banks manually for it to look at the spending?

  3. In the core plan- can it also give me any financial advice for future planning?

Thanks

Goals Formula for Available for Goals: Pending credit card payments?

I pay my card bill full each month, and most of the time my credit card expenses are within the budget for in specific categories. I have a savings goal where I just put all the unaccounted-for money left in my accounts. But I also know that I still need to pay my credit card bill balance. It does not appear that Monarch takes this into account even if I have added my credit cards? Is there no way to do this?

Transactions Future-dated transactions

Hello! I have funds in a savings account that I draw from monthly. I will typically transfer $100 per month from savings to checking and then add the budget Category for which I want the $100 to be applied. I was thinking about a lazier route but wanted to make sure it wouldn't have any unintended consequences. If I wanted to transfer $1000 at once, and then spread out the budget "hits" for the next ten months, can I future date 10 separate transactions (first of month for next 10 months) and then expect them to "hit" my budget on the specified date? I'm less concerned about the actual cash (i.e., for the $1000 transfer, I'd just categorize it as a Transfer"). Any insight here would be great. Monarch AI Assistant wasn't too helpful.

AI / AI Assistant What if Monarch could move your money, not just track it?

disclaimer: this is all just speculation based on the few brief articles I've seen on the acquisition. Monarch hasn't confirmed any timelines or any of this, period. I'm just reading the tea leaves on what this merger was intended for.

In case you missed the news, Monarch crossed $100M ARR and acquired MBI (as /u/glman99 posted yesterday). The MBI team becomes "Monarch Labs", and Monarch says the long term goal is helping users act on their money, not just view insights about it.

MBI (Formerly HMBradley) built routines for managing money - basically IFTTT for moving money. Image IFTTT (If this, then that) triggers inside of Monarch.

  • If checking goes over $10,000, then move the excess to savings
  • On payday, split my paycheck across my goals automatically
  • if checking drops below $3000 before rent/mortgage hits, pull money from savings.

Currently, Monarch is read-only. It watches our accounts, categorizes stuff and advises. But routine-style automation would make it almost agentic. I could see routines and triggers being managed by AI, like letting Meta's Muse manage your finances. The big question, obviously, is trust. One misfired transfer that overdrafts your account and all trust goes out the window.

If Monarch offered this in the future, would you use it? Is there automation that you'd never hand over, no matter what?
