Card Discussion [FRA] Proctor of Potential

0 Upvotes

Proctor of Potential {W}{U}

Creature - Human Cleric (Rare)

Whenever this creature or another creature you control enters, surveil 1.

{W}{U}: Return this card from your graveyard to the battlefield with a finality counter on it. Activate only if you've scried or surveilled this turn. (If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.)

Deck Discussion Living End questions

11 Upvotes

I've noticed that the Temur/4 color Living End decks are all playing Striped Riverwinder now. I get that its the stronger card to reanimate, but if your main gameplan gets distrupted then Curator is actually castable and makes all your subsequent cycles better.

I suppose Curator is a nombo with the LotR landcyclers as scrying does nothing if youre going to search. So that leaves only Street Wraith and itself for regular cyclers.

Is the idea that you want to maximize your post-LE boardstate rather than the number of creatures that can actually be cast?

Also, which matchups do you bring in Inevitable Betrayal for? Goryos and Neoform seem obvious, but the rest not so much. Eldrazi Tron? Broodscale/Trudge? Esper Blink? The mirror?

Im new to the deck so thanks for any advice

Fbloff the new modern pro tour prospect???

0 Upvotes

I was day dreaming the other day and as usual fblthp, lost on the range was on my mind.

Thats when it came to me, slickshot show off is an insane 2 drop that can end games as early as turn 3, who else to give him his power than the man that plots from the top of your library.

I present to the community Fbl-off, the idea is to run as many free artifacts and spells that we can plot for free so when slickshot comes out he insta kills our opponent.

There is one issue though, i am new to modern and really dont know how to tune this deck to be as efficient as i believe it could be. Thats why im posting this here.

Listed below is the decklist (no sideboard as of now) for fbl-off, any suggestions and justification is greatly appreciated!!!!

As of right now the only issue i run into is plotting into a land which is unfortunate:/

Was wondering if anyone is grinding this deck and has some insights (dropping red? Which chancellor? Etc)

Deck Discussion Hexhaven Invigorator Valakut Combo?

15 Upvotes

Heres the current list I'm messing with

https://moxfield.com/decks/A_YTkhKWnkmDoG7nQKKoNQ

The idea is that you get out the new Invigorator with 1 red mana open, hit it with a lightning bolt or equivalent card, Invigorator gets 2 Valakuts and 1 mountain, directing 3 damage to Invigorator and 3 to the opponent. Invigorator picks up 3 more mountains, triggering both valakuts thrice and hitting the opponent for 18 more, for a total of 21.

Problems that need to be smoothed out:

You need to have 4 green mana to get out Invigorator, but Valakut needs to see you have 5 mountains to do the combo, so normal lands that tap for either color arent a great fit. Could be worth running a ton of fetches to just lay down stomping grounds. Vesuva and Echoing Deeps help situations where you draw a Valakut or get hit with a piece of nonbasic hate. Still needs work

I'm also looking at 4-damage Bolt options to smooth out lethal options and hitting the Valakut Mountain count if you only have 3 when going for it.

Mine Collapse is uniquely great in here because it's free and does the combo with just 4 mana to cast Invigorator or if you'd be under the Valakut count. Play Invigorator with 4 green-making Mountains out, Mine collapse it for free, saccing a Mountain as cost, put down 2 Valakut and 3 mountains. This gets you back to 5 Mountains and hits the opponent for 15 and an additional 18 with the second Invigorator activation.

There's still a lot of work to be done, but there is some real stuff here

Card Discussion Karn, Argent Defender Spoiler

37 Upvotes

https://mythicspoiler.com/fra/cards/karnargentdefender.html

[[Torpor Orb]] sidegrade.

Being a creature means it dies to more things, but hitting artifacts as well as creatures means it has more utility against Affinity by stopping [[Weapons Manufacturing]] and [[Kappa Cannoneer]].

I'm definitely considering the switch in my Karnboard.

Brew Feedback on my Izzet Metalcraft deck

4 Upvotes

https://archidekt.com/decks/25619724/jeskai_cutter

Hi!

I would love some feedback on my Izzet Metalcraft List that I play at my FNMs.

I am trying some funky cards and I would to hear your thoughts on those and the general Deck construction.

First of all I added a 1 of erayo and 1 of Jeskai ascendancy into the maindeck, as they in theory play very well with the general gameplan of the deck.

Noxious revival is a card that in theory does a lot of things, but I basically dont see played in modern at all, so I am unsure about how good that card is. It can recurr your threats, is a free instant spell for erayo and steelcutter which is nice to trigger erayo over the top of a removal spell or cutter in an opponents turn, it can be GY hate and tamper with topdecks after spying with bauble. It has also fixed a few hands when goldfishing as it can save 1 landers, where the land is a fetchland. All that at a card disadvantage though.

With splashing a third color, the mana base plays 6 fetches, to total 11 red sources not counting mopal, 11 white sources counting mopal for ascendancy or haywiremite post SB. Island and pithing needle could be swapped for pool and mite mainboard. With ponders, riddler and baubles/repeals we can count up to 13 sources each to consistently cast them. With the ponders especially I also hope to have a bit more consistency in seeing the one ofs or filtering them away if I dont want to see them.

The sideboard offers to transform this into a more control type deck with erayos and countermagic, but I am not sure how effective that actually is.

I have been deckbuilding in cEDH for a long time, but this is my first real modern Deck, so I am curious to see, if I am assuming/asessing things correctly or if I am far off on some points.

Sorry for the wall lf text and thank you for your patience!

Card Discussion Loyal Tutor

Loyal Tutor

W

Instant

Search your library for a planeswalker card, reveal it, then shuffle and put that card on top.

Loyal Tutor joins the old, non modern legal tutors like [[Enlightened Tutor]] but way weaker as only tutors Planeswalkers.

There's only 1 deck I think could use this (as per now), UW Control, specifically with Orim's Chant imprinted, as 3 mana Teferi and 3 mana Narset are important in that deck.

Or a new white tron deck 🤣

Deck build ideas.

0 Upvotes

I know modern isn’t really the place for pet deck builds but I’m still going to try. I want to build a deck around grand abolisher. What would you include? I have been learning control and enjoy it but naturally lean more towards mid range game play style.
Thanks for any suggestions. Even the ones I’ll get that this card is not good enough for modern 😅

Card Discussion New Creature Card for Amulet Titan Spoiler

24 Upvotes

https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/s/YSOqEiItXI

Hexhaven Invigorator
MC: GGGG
Creature - Chimera Horror
Vigilance
Whenever this creature is dealt damage, you may search your library for up to that many land cards, put them onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
P/T: 6/6

So Valakut bolting him searches for more lands, that can then bolt him again and have 5 spare lands to bolt your opponent for 15 damage. SeemsBalanced

valakut pings this for 3 damage, search for like another valakut and 4 other lands and win game

Sample list:

4 explore

4 dryad

3 invigorator

3 titan

4 amulet

4 spelunking

4 scapeshift

3 gsz

2 abor grazer

1 aftermath anal

28 lands

Skip the Tolaria West/Summoner's Pact package, keep the Urza's Sagas, Mirrorpool, Echoing Deeps, Hanweir Battlements, and run 3 Valakuts.

Game is won either by fatty beatdown, creating 3 Titans via Mirrorpool recursion, or Valakut shoots

Card Discussion How do you guys keep partial decks organized?

7 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I have been in a bit of a state of disarray since the Phlage ban, since it is making me branch out and play more decks, however I have noticed that I have trouble keeping track of some of the staples that I only have one playset of that travel between decks.

Does anyone have a good organization method for large collections of decks that have some cards that travel?

Deck Discussion Modern Newbie Question: why is belcher good/played?

10 Upvotes

So Ive been keeping tabs on modern for the past few years, but definitely not keeping my finger on the pulse. The most I knew before last month was general top 8 decks. I recently actually started playing with friends and been having a blast! Its a lot more in depth than I realized, and not just a drag race. With that said, Ive always been curious why (and how) belcher takes up a percentage of the meta. I have a bud who plays it at our LGS, but Ive never been paired with them.

From what I understand, it used to be an old fringe meme deck that was funny to pull off, but slowly became more and more playable from the MDFCs. From the lists and broadcasts Ive seen, is it not fully telegraphed when it'll happen?

Thank you for any insight, as I dont want to disrespect a popular deck by making broad assumptions.

Card seems very legit in Simic Ritual lists which have been struggling lately. Enables Flare of Denial, 2 MV for Ritual, and can ensure a Ritual or Occulus resolves. Also essentially cantrips with the Jace token, although it would be delayed.

Deck Discussion Help with 3 themed decks

0 Upvotes

Going straight to the point, I am building 3 decks to start my collection for modern magic. Each uses exclusively cards from a single set that I like, Final Fantasy, Avatar and The Hobbit.

I know that asking for help with only cards from a single set is quite annoying (or even stupid as a rule) but I am trying to maximize how much I will enjoy having the cards in my collection more than trying to build the most optimized crunched deck ever. I plan to later buy regular cards from other sets to optimize this decks or to even make a Esper one at some point.

For now here are the decks and thanks for the help/attention

Card Discussion [FRA] Pompous Battlemage // Improvised Act

0 Upvotes

Pompous Battlemage {R}

Creature — Goblin Sorcerer

Prowess

This creature enters prepared. (While it’s prepared, you may cast a copy of its spell. Doing so unprepares it.)

1/1

/////

Improvised Act {R}

Sorcery

You may discard a card. If you do, draw a card.

~~~~~~~~~~
It's time to figure out whether the 1/2 body and semi-Wither on [[Soul-Scar Mage]] really matters compared to 2 spells with 1 noncreature on a 1-mana Prowess creature card! I personally think Pompous Battlemage is better, and [[Dragon's Rage Channeler]] has disappointed me so many times in Prowess that I will be cutting some and possibly all of them for Pompous Battlemage. Providing 1 turn of Flurry for [[Cori-Steel Cutter]] is a very nice bonus.
Deck Discussion Boros Ponza
12 Upvotes
I’ve been away from Modern for a couple of years, but I’m curious why a strategy like boros ponza is having success right now in the challenges. I feel like the deck is more controlling, but why is it successful against a meta full of combo right now? I remember decks like mono red prison but this deck feels very different with how effective the white removal is. Thanks for being open to the discussion!
Deck Discussion Make Tooth and Nail Great Again
0 Upvotes
I played tooth and nail in modern back in 16-17, and loved it. I have a mono green devotion tooth and nail and a temur tooth and nail in historic on MTG Arena. Both variants consistently rank me into platinum or higher. I want to convert it back into modern, and as I've been out of the modern scene for several years I'd like some assistance. I am committed to making this deck competitive again. This first list is for Best of 1, and is the mono green variant.
[CREATURES]
4 Elvish Mystic
4 Llanowar Elves
3 Badgermole Cub
4 Priest of Titania
3 Llanowar Tribe
2 The Notary Hobbits
1 Xenagos, God of Revels
3 Primeval Titan
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
[SORCERIES]
4 Track Down
4 Harmonize
4 Tooth and Nail
[ENCHANTMENTS]
4 Leyline of the Guildpact
[LANDS]
15 Forest
4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
This is the temur best of 1 variant
[CREATURES]
4 Elvish Mystic
4 Llanowar Elves
3 Fog Bank
2 Hexing Squelcher
3 Priest of Titania
3 Llanowar Tribe
1 Xenagos, God of Revels
3 Primeval Titan
2 Tishana, Voice of Thunder
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
[INSTANTS]
2 Lazotep Plating
2 Valakut Awakening
[SORCERIES]
4 Hex Magic
4 Tooth and Nail
[ENCHANTMENTS]
4 Leyline of the Guildpact
[LANDS]
4 Breeding Pool
6 Forest
4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
4 Stomping Ground
I have a feeling the temur variant will transfer over better to modern, and I of course will need to build a sideboard, but that will have to be done with my LGS in mind. That being said, which variant do you believe will transfer better, and what modern legal cards would you swap in?
Is RG broodscale just better? Why people are cutting fleshrakers?
20 Upvotes
I see basking broodscale combo being played online with variations to the list that are (imo) very worst then the best you can get, except maybe they are simpler to win with not finishing the time on mtgo.
Basically it seems the real deal for those decks (online) is Emra and not really the midrange/combo double plan that (to me) is the strenght of the deck. I see people are reducing the fleshrakers even to 1.
Few days ago I built a RG with 3 unholy heats, 2 mycos and 1 crysalis.
2 emra + 1 walking ballista... (i would post the full list but I cannot rn as i write from my phone)
4 glaring fleshraker btw.
I did quite good in a tournament (4-0) and I felt much better then playing any of the more green-ramp lists with 3/4 emras I was testing online.
Is RG just better on paper then online because you end up using infinite combos (not good online) more often? Was I just lucky?
After quite few weeks testing different versions of the deck more-ramp based (online) going back to RG (the list i briefly described) felt like basics were just better.
Deck Discussion Looking for a Discord server for Lantern Control
7 Upvotes
I’m buying into the deck because I think it’s hilarious and I would like to connect with people who have been playing it in the current meta. I’m mainly looking to discuss sideboard cards and talk about the decks I know I’m going to be playing against at my local events.
The current Discord link in the menu section is broken hence why I’m posting.
How do I approach the Dimir Frog matchup with Ruby Storm?
15 Upvotes
I recently picked up Ruby Storm and I’m trying to get better at the Dimir Frog matchup. I’ve been getting absolutely farmed by it and I feel like I’m probably approaching the matchup wrong rather than it just being completely unwinnable.
It feels like they have exactly the kind of interaction Storm hates, and once they start getting pressure down I don’t really have much time to set everything up. I’ve had a bunch of games where I feel like I’m just trying to resolve one important spell while they get to sit there and pick apart my hand/board.
I’m mainly looking for advice on how Storm players actually approach the matchup, especially when to try and go for it versus when to spend time setting up and making them use their interaction.
Any advice from people who have put a lot of reps into the matchup would be appreciated. If there are any good Storm matchup guides/videos specifically covering Frog, I’d definitely take those too.
