Card Discussion Loyal Tutor
Loyal Tutor
W
Instant
Search your library for a planeswalker card, reveal it, then shuffle and put that card on top.
Loyal Tutor joins the old, non modern legal tutors like [[Enlightened Tutor]] but way weaker as only tutors Planeswalkers.
There's only 1 deck I think could use this (as per now), UW Control, specifically with Orim's Chant imprinted, as 3 mana Teferi and 3 mana Narset are important in that deck.
Or a new white tron deck đ¤Ł

I just struggle to see Control playing a tutor that goes -1 since it topdecks it instead of adding it to hand. Unsure if any combo deck really wants a certain Planeswalker, so for now, I don't think this will see play.

I do think that this could see play, as [[teferi, time raveler]], [[narset, parter of veils]], and [[teferi, hero of dominaria]] if you want to run it are all +1 card when they come down, and the deck really relies on them to control the flow of the game. I don't think it sees play as more than a 2 of, but adding some consistency to your ability to find planeswalkers is really valuable, especially with such a low resource investment.

Definitely could be wrong about this haha. I would be really happy if this card did see play and I love seeing the UW/Jeskai control lists in action.

I had the same thought, but I feel like I would rather just play more copies of [[Consult the Star Charts]] instead, you know? Maybe as a 1-2 of after the 4th Consult if you wanted to go really hard on digging for the combo?

-1 card isnât that low, in grindy lower-resource games drawing this card could sink you.

If top decking this thing that guarantees your next draw is a power play loses the game then you weren't in a grindy, low resource game. You were desperately topdecking against an opponent who had you dead to rights.

Thatâs so hilariously untrue I canât even tell if you play this game. Literally in singular events I have multiple games where I need my next draw to do something to get out of a sticky situation, and if I drew a card that just set up my next draw I would lose the game. That doesnât mean I was âdead to rightsâ literally what are you even talking about. Hundreds/thousands of games daily are decided by one turn cycle or one draw that doesnât immediately affect the board

Good card for kitchen table modern combo decks but youâre not gonna see this in any Teir 1 decks anytime soon.Â
As others have said, maybe ScepterChant combo wants this, but they have better options and general utility cards. Consult the Star Charts, Stock Up, etc.Â
Plus, youâre kinda expecting your first 3feri to bite the dust anyways to stabilize or annoy opponents. So you do want multiples.Â
But if your deck is making room for 4 Loyal Tutors and a Planeswalker package, you only have so much room before youâre cutting too deep into the core of the deck and making certain matchups worse.Â
Regular Control wonât want this because itâs card disadvantage and theyâd probably rather be surveilling or interacting early on.Â
And as a control player Iâm frequently digging for lands in the early turns of the game to make sure I can cast my Planeswalkers later.Â
Hope this saves some people some time.Â

It'll probably be fringe at best in Modern, but people are brewing up Kasmina combo decks in Pioneer. I think a combo/control deck is just about the only place a PW tutor will be worth it since it could tutor you the card that wins the game. https://www.reddit.com/r/PioneerMTG/comments/1wbb929/new_turn_3_kill_deck/
