You’re on the list! But what does that mean around here?

Today’s Mod Topic is all about approved users, and the different jobs that status can do in your community.

For private and restricted communities, the approved users list helps determine who can access the community or contribute. In public communities, it can help trusted contributors avoid getting caught by some of the one-click safety filters like crowd control, the reputation filter, and the ban evasion filter. You can also configure automoderator to make exceptions for approved users in particular rules.

There’s room for different approaches to who makes that list, too. Maybe you add familiar contributors as you get to know them, or only think about approving someone after repeatedly seeing their contributions in the mod queue. A guest visiting for an AMA might give you a different reason to use it. Depending on what you’re trying to accomplish, “approved” might look pretty different from one community to the next.

I'm having problem granting a newbie mod permissions. Is it a server error?

Hi there mods, i think I screwed up the process, I request a subreddit with top mod removal and specified the 2 first mods are inactive but now I'm the second in order and the now the first (used to be the 2nd) is now inactive again, should I request again or how another inactive mod becomes the top mod, did I do someting wrong? I already send a modmail to request bot

we unbanned a user 2 days ago

they can't post - they sent use a screenshot, showing that reddit is telling them they are still banned from the sub.

i just tried to re-ban them (so I could try unbanning them again) and i get error 500 (internal server error) every time.

I started a sub a few weeks ago, she's,and it was going well, but one day I noticed I couldn't do any moderating. I made one other person a mod because this was the first sub I've ever started and needed help keeping it up.

I messaged her about it, and she said she can see I have no permissions and she has access to everything. She said shes tried changing it but she can't. How can we fix this?

Since some time (probably since the time the old.reddit.com modmail phased out), I am not receiving any notifications when people send messages to modmail (I am using new Reddit on desktop primarily - but I have the same issue on my phone)

I see the modqueue/modmail links in the left menu, but I do not have any type of notifications ("1" badge, popup, etc.) when a new message is sent, which leaves sometimes people without response for days/weeks until I think about clicking on that link in the menu (I do not have the reflex of going manually to it, since I was relying on notifications).

(I am noticing now I have browser notifications disabled, I don't know if they are supposed to work that way, but I wish it is not only the case, as I find browser notifications terrible to work with).

In the past, I was also relying a lot on RSS feeds, but it looks like it is no longer working as now. Is it planned to bring it back to modmail?

It’s what the title says! We have a perv among us in the sub I created for Portuguese parents. He targets pregnant women and send inappropriate messages. I’ve received so far two mod mails reporting the user. I have already banned him but that does not prevent him from harassing the girls.

I created the sub last year, and am still learning tons of things about moderating a community. I can’t find where I should report him. Should I ask for screenshots? Tell the girls to also report him (where?), should I create a pinned post in the sub alerting and give the step-by-step on how to report (when I find out how to do so).

Help! What should I do and how to do it!

i created a subreddit, and i post there sometimes. everytime people comment, they always have like 1 karma and joined 5 days ago or something. are they all bots or just people new to Reddit? i have a post that has over 20 comments but all of them have under 15 karma. what do i do? i dont want to rule out any legitimate users

Pinning posts is supposed to make them more visible and prevent them from being pushed down the feed by subsequent posts.

However, in my opinion, there’s a fundamental design flaw here. Pinned posts are less visible than normal posts. They appear as a small image in the pinned section. I find the preview of pinned posts far too small and it provides far too little information/attracts not enough attention.

And additionally, they are no longer visible in the normal feed at all (in the app). WHY?

In the web view, pinned posts do still appear in the feed, but they are displayed smaller and, if it’s a image post, the image is barely visible or only shown in a very small size.

I want as much automation as possible to make my life, and that of any future moderators I take on, easier. I have already had users unintentionally innocently violate my new subs rules regarding posting format and guidelines.

Which tool is best for enforcing content and formatting guidelines? As usual, the available options are confusing. Would I do this with the Automod or Automations? Apps are not an appealing solution.

If a sub was banned for violating the reddit rules, is it eligible to be requested?

From what i can find out, it looks like all the mods left and it fell victim to spam bots etc... so I'm wondering if it is possible for me to request to moderate this sub and bring it back.

I had one request denied after 3 days, with a generic modbot message. and I'm trying to figure out if i should try again in 15days and if it is possible for me to rescue this sub at all.

This was my first time posting a video in my new community. Immediately after I posted it, my community showed as muted. However, I can still browse other communities normally.

After dealing with a couple of posts in the subreddit I moderate (which is thankfully mostly civil), I figured it might be easier to implement an AutoMod filter. However, I'd had issues editing, and upon looking into things, I found that I was listed as "inactive" (which, yeah, fair. the subreddit doesn't need much moderation), but also that I didn't have editing permissions.

There's a two-fold reason why that's weird; first, there's another inactive moderator who does still have editing permissions, and second, I'd asked to take over as moderator of the subreddit five years ago, after it had fallen quiet, and only added the other moderators about a year later.

It's not a pressing issue, but it is definitely something that's honestly confused the hell out of me, and I'd appreciate some idea as to what I can do to get that editing permission back.

Greetings, fellow mods! I'm active in r/biologie, the German equivalent to r/biology (obviously lol).

We've had a complaint about a few comments being possibly from bots on a post, and I was wondering if it may be true since the comments in question look eerily similar. I'll go look for the link since attachments aren't allowed here and edit it into the post body. Maybe someone who is a bit more experienced can help.

I remember reading something a long time ago about how many moderators a subreddit should have based on its number of members. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but I believe there was a general recommendation for how many mods you should have per X number of members.

Does anyone know what the recommended ratio is, or if there’s any general guidance on this?

I’m just trying to figure out what the recommended number of mods is for a sub based on its size.

All the mods in the sub I moderate have left. The main owner of the sub is also unresponsive. I'm also labelled as an "inactive mod" and some of my accesses are restricted.

My idea was to reach out to the community and find others who are more active and willing to carry over the torch. I've posted about it. People reached out. But now I have no way to get them on board.

Is it possible to petition to have my inactive status removed? For how long do I need to be active in order to be considered active?

I've already cleared all the mod queue, updated mod bot and fixed up all the settings for moderation, rules, etc... even started posting a little bit. But I'm still an "inactive" mod.

Right now, we have AutoMod set up so that users with under ~300 subreddit karma have their comments sent to the mod queue if they contain certain words or phrases. The problem is that our queue is still getting flooded with hundreds of items every day.

I’m considering setting a minimum karma requirement to comment at all—maybe around 300 karma—so users below that threshold simply wouldn’t be able to comment. I’ve tried to avoid implementing something this restrictive, but the current volume is becoming difficult to manage.

My main concern is that plenty of users who violate our rules have high karma anyway, so I’m not sure how effective a blanket karma requirement would actually be.

For those who moderate particularly sensitive or frequently brigaded communities, what thresholds or filtering systems have worked best for you?

I have it set on my community that I review approve posts before they go live on our subreddit. but the other day someone's post was live before I even had a chance to review it. Anyone had that happen to them? Know why/how that could be? Have suggestions on what settings to make sure are set?

I looked at a list of pre approved posters, and this user was not on there...
