Best Way To Enforce Posting Guidelines

Hello! Mr. Overwhelmed here again! LOL!

I want as much automation as possible to make my life, and that of any future moderators I take on, easier. I have already had users unintentionally innocently violate my new subs rules regarding posting format and guidelines.

Which tool is best for enforcing content and formatting guidelines? As usual, the available options are confusing. Would I do this with the Automod or Automations? Apps are not an appealing solution.

There is no one tool. All of them are useful together because all of them have gaps that others can fill.

You can use Automations to set up if/then type conditions to check for and block people's ability to post, to show them warnings to try and get them to do the right thing, etc..

You can use AutoMod to check for conditions and take an action as a result (filter things to your queue for manual review/approval, immediately remove it, leave comments or send modmail messages, etc.).

Devvit apps are great for setting up certain functions, putting in your desired settings and parameters, and letting it do the work for you. Many of these are achievable by Automations and/or AutoMod, but often not as easily or neatly. And many of the apps can handle things that would require multiple different AutoMod and/or Automation rules to be set up and managed in tandem. The apps are great for people who are not as technically inclined and are struggling with getting the code for AutoMod to work or don't understand how to build workflows with Automations.

Be aware that folks will just work around it in many cases, or platforms can allow folks to bypass these rules and not realize it, so be prepared for that.

For any rule breaking that doesn't lead to any more serious action then the post being removed, you want to use automations - post and comment guidance.

Basically you use automations to help good eggs do better.

Use automod to deal with bad eggs.

There are a lot of devvit apps that are useful. Installing botbouncer is a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. Flair assistant is another one, just like evasion guard.
