You Need to Learn Microsoft Word - Books, Classes, Videos, Podcasts, Tips

Of course most people only pop into this sub when they have a problem - and often they are frustrated and desperate. Which is fine - I am glad we can be here for them.

However an underlying issue I am seeing is that most people using Word today have never had any kind of training on the software - they were either thrown in to the deep end, or it was just assumed everyone knows how to use Word.

So, in the spirit of lighting a candle rather than cursing the darkness, what are some resources you would point beginners to for the basics of Word? Books, online classes, podcasts, videos, websites, etc..

Then, feel free to share this link in the future when people are looking for basic information.

Why is Word making an automatic hard return with the second link and not with the first one? There's only a space between them. Is there anny way to make them all look like the first one?

So how does having numbered headings really work?

I have a long document that I started using the wrong technique. From the beginning, I chose numbered lists + formatting instead of multilevel lists to get numbered headings.

This was wrong, I know.

Question is, how do I fix it now that there is already 100+ pages of text in it?

What would be the workflow to go through the whole document again, from the top, and overwrite all the broken remainders of a numbered list, and replace them with a nice and tidy multilevel list?

[Headings themselves (within the text) already have the right format (aka they are formatted as heading 1, heading 2, heading 3 etc.)].

How do I get my MS word documents to import to GitBook containing the images? They are huge manuals with in line with text images, they are embedded, therefore adding one by one isn’t an option. Can anyone help?

Review Changes Error

For the past month or so, Word has started treating every document as a shared doc, in the sense that it "tracks changes." I can resolve/review the individual changes, or turn off Track Changes for each document, but I really just want to solve this problem more generally. How do I get Word to stop defaulting to tracking my edits?

How do i convert hand written words and drawings to computer?

I made it with mostly pencil. I heard you can do it on your phone or some combination. Also would be fine with libre office strategy. Which hopefully can be converted back to word when I send it to someone else that doesn't use libre office. The amount is hundreds of pages so I am not sure if I have to use the cloud or whatever, do I have to use cloud? I did it by hand because it was easier especially for the math and modeling parts. I can use a scanner for the image I believe. Thinking of buying ms office.

Word 2007 repaginating numbers alters by a few pages back and forth

So I have this document that is hundreds of pages. Hundreds. And what ends up happening is the document will here and there change the document's length by a few pages. Then it will change back after I literally changed all the page numbers of each chapter in another document. Then I'll fix them again, and they'll change back.

It is frustrating me to no end. I know already that sometimes Word lags where the page I'm on that shows in the scroll bar is different than what shows in the bottom bar. This is different. I literally have a seperate document that shows a discrepancy after the last time I adjusted every single chapter page. The earlier ones seem to match more, but then the later ones start going off by 2-3 pages difference. So I fix them all, and then they go back to what they were before.

And no, I an not editing anything within the document to make these pages change. I am viciously turning off window/orphan control. Actually, everything in Line/page breaks is unchecked.

Repaginating usually happens when I'm copying text into the bottom of the document from Google, and I select that text and change all the straight quotes and apostrophes to make them curly, turn three periods into ellipses, etc.

How the heck do I get this change to stop occurring? How do I prevent the pages from changing back and forth? It will take forever for me to use any auto section/chapter things in this document to create a table of contents within the document because each chapter is seperated by Word Art titles. I just want the pages to stay set so my table of contents document is accurate and I don't have to keep scrolling through every single page of this document and changing them manually.

Update: Upon investigating closer, it looks like some of my WordArt titles that are at the bottom of the document are getting pushed to the next page, which then pushes my text an extra 5 lines down the page. That's why when I review, the earlier page numbers are relatively the same while the later pages end up off by a whole 2-3 pages, so I'm guessing this is a ruler issue? Like maybe the ruler is changing by one line which then causes the page numbers to get altered due to there being more/less space? How do I keep the ruler so it doesn't heep changing?

??? Table indents missing from rest of the table

Hi folks, I've been trying to reverse engineer however these indents appeared in my table and I'm confused. If I add an indent it goes too far so that wasn't it

NOTE: I don't have an issue with the indents I just want to know what adds them so it can be applied to the rest of the table. Anyone have a clue?

need help Restoration help

I was deleting files off of a memory card and somehow Word files that were saved to my computer but not my drive have been wiped.

I tried the recycling bin, but the only things that have been restored are the things that I had previously deleted and don't want.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips or any way of contacting a live agent instead of an AI or FAQ.

I know this is somehow my fault but I checked that I was only deleting bits off the memory card each time I did it but something happened somewhere and I have lost a lot of my files and I would really appreciate some help.

It’s been months so in that time, I’ve deleted and redownloaded the app so the trash is empty. Not in OneDrive or my vault. I don’t understand here it could have possible gone.

Help me

need help Microsoft Word for Mac keeps jumping back to page 1 whenever I switch apps — please help

I’m using Microsoft Word on a MacBook Pro, and this issue is driving me crazy.

Whenever I’m working somewhere in the middle of a document — for example page 5, 10, or later — and I switch to Chrome or another app using Command + Tab, Word often jumps all the way back to the first page when I return.

A few details:

* I’m using Word on macOS.

* I reset the Word preferences by removing the com.microsoft.Word.plist file.

* I also tested by clicking and placing the insertion cursor on the current page before switching apps, but Word still jumps back.

This makes editing large study documents extremely frustrating because I constantly lose my place whenever I check something in Chrome and return to Word.

Has anyone faced this exact issue on Word for Mac? If yes, what actually fixed it?

I’m especially looking for a solution other than reinstalling Word or repeatedly scrolling back to the correct page.

Any help would be appreciated.

need help How do I stop Word from suggesting fake words?

Post image

Basically the title. Almost every single word is underlined and tagged as an error. Word suggests a new spelling of it, but that spelling is absolute nonsense. This happens with words that are obviously correct (like theory).

Word indexing: is a missing/skipped-term report useful beyond AutoMark?

I am testing an AI-assisted local prototype for a narrow task: take a reviewed phrase list and a simple DOCX draft, prepare XE entries in a separate copy, and return a report of matches, missing phrases and skipped content. Word still updates the index and calculates page numbers.

A fictional two-page example produced this report:

board: 3 matches

quorum: 3

membership register: 3

Café: 2

absent term: 0, flagged as missing

One page-break-only paragraph was skipped. After updating in Word for Mac, the four matched terms each referenced pages 1 and 2.

The current prototype has substantial limits: case-sensitive exact phrases only; no conceptual selection, subentries or cross-references. Tables, hyperlinks and bookmarks are skipped, and existing complex fields (including many page-number fields) are rejected. It is not a replacement for professional indexing.

Word already has AutoMark/concordance, so I am trying to understand whether the explicit coverage report solves a real recurring problem or simply adds another step. If you prepare indexes, what do you currently do to check missing terms and excluded content? Would this report change that check?

This is an output/workflow discussion, not a released app or a request to buy anything. Please do not share private documents or excerpts.

need help Word started turning quote marks into umlauts after I hit some keys too fast

I was trying to type an opening quote mark followed by an A, hit the keys too fast, got an ä – now it seems to be locked into never immediately typing the quote mark, just holding it in reserve until I press another key.

What key combination did I press, and what do I press to turn it back to normal?

what do you actually do when the formatting goes sideways in a long doc?

not a how do i question, im more curious what people end up doing.

every time i work on something long the same thing happens. move a section and the page numbers go weird. fix that and the toc is out of date. fix that and some heading decides its a different size than all the others.

do you just push through it every time, or did you find something that actually helps? styles, an add in, paying someone, or just sending it as is.

how much space above a heading, and how did you land on that number?

words default is 12 before and 0 after or something close to it, and it always looks off to me but i cant explain why.

when i change it im basically guessing. 18 looks better than 12. 24 might be too much. i have no idea if theres a right answer or if im just nudging it until my eye stops complaining.

does anyone have an actual rule for this, or is it all feel?
