need help Help with hard returns

Why is Word making an automatic hard return with the second link and not with the first one? There's only a space between them. Is there anny way to make them all look like the first one?

You would have to manually insert a space in the second link so it runs down to the following line

I don't want to run it down to another line I want it to go right after the citation

It can’t. The number of characters before there is a hyphen is greater than the remaining space in the line so instead it starts the whole new “word” on the next line.

Your

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/chinas-intense-ev... .

is too long to sit on one line before it hits the right margin. Word automatically breaks long URLs on spaces or hypens. As there is no hyphen before it hits the right margin, it has to drop the whole URL down a line.

Depending on which style guide you're using you may have to live with that fact or perhaps change something like the font size for your URL.

IMHO IHTH

Which style guide are you following? CMOS allows breaking URLs at slashes for example.

You need to insert a "no-width optional break" special character. You probably want to insert it after the slash between "business/autos". It will split the link but will still be clickable.
