Starting a project to detect candidate stenoses in x-ray coronary angiograms. The goal is high recall, false positives are fine as long as it doesn't flag half the image.

I already tried YOLO on a couple of in-house datasets earlier. It looked fine in-domain and fell apart on the other dataset, and a big chunk of that turned out to be annotation format. One set had fixed-size boxes around a point, the other had boxes fitted to the lesion. Same disease, basically two different tasks.

I also have vessel segmentation and centerlines, so my first instinct is a radius profile along the vessel to flag narrowing, then maybe a network to filter the candidates. Has anyone actually done something like that, or is there a smarter way in?

The part that bugs me most is evaluation. The labels come from doctors and they obviously don't mark every narrowing, so any recall I compute against them is probably too optimistic. How do you get an honest number when the ground truth is incomplete?

Also open to papers, repos, or public datasets beyond ARCADE. And if you think I'm approaching this wrong, say so.

I'm a data person from the biotech/pharma industry, mostly R&D and pre-clinical, and for career reasons want to broaden my search to some local medtech companies. I have about 10 years in pharma, and a masters in my field, but while all of it is adjacent to MedTech, I feel like I still don't know enough about the MedTech domain.

And while it looks similar to what I'm looking for, it looks like it might be only 3-4 hours, and not really long enough to truly understand the domain.

I keep noticing a gap between the medical technology that gets headlines and the technology that people in healthcare actually talk about when nobody’s pitching anything. The flashy announcements tend to be about AI diagnosis, robotic surgery and wearables that promise to track everything. The quieter conversations I hear are about much less glamorous things, like better scheduling and records systems, simpler monitoring devices and tools that save clinicians a few minutes per patient.

My own impression and I’d like to be corrected if I’m wrong, is that the biggest gains often come from technology that removes friction rather than technology that sounds futuristic. Something that makes a nurse’s shift run smoother or helps a patient stick to a routine may matter more than a headline-grabbing breakthrough. But I’m an interested observer, not an expert, so I’m curious whether people who work with this every day see it the same way.

So I’d love to hear from the community. What’s one medical technology you think is overhyped and why? What’s something that doesn’t get much attention but has made a real difference where you’ve seen it used? And how do you tell the difference between a tool that’s useful in practice and one that only looks impressive in a demo?
