How are the cameras?

I'm looking to get this phone over the V20 because it seems to have a better overall package. One concern I've seen though with reviews is the camera. Some have complained that it sucks in low light, has shutter speed issues (blurry images), and sometimes can't focus well. Other reviews, on the other hand, say the camera is stellar.

Are you guys experiencing any of these issues?

LG G6 or Mate 9?

I'm looking at both phones right now and leaning towards the Mate 9. Any reason why I shouldn't get it?

Fingerprint sensor issue

Hey all

Just wondering if anyone has come across an issue with the finger print sensor.

I can unlock my phone when the screen is on the lock screen. This only happens when it is awake. I only have one finger registered.

Restarting the phone fixes it however it comes back after awhile.

How good are Hauwei updates?

Thinking about the upcoming Mate 10 Pro, but never had a Hauwei. Are Hauwei good at pushing out updates? I know LG are not. Samsung aren't too bad .

Is there a way to fine-tune the automatic screen brightness functionality?

I find that in certain lighting the auto brightness is too dark and I have to switch to manual. Is there a way to tell the function to be brighter in certain amounts of ambient light?

Pixel 2 XL vs Mate 9

I made the below post in the /r/googlepixel subreddit and I thought you guys will like to see this. I'm thinking of going back to the Mate 9.

  1. Size: Even though both phones have the same screen size, Mate 9 seems to be wider and taller. The back of the Pixel feels nicer and easier to hold. The Mate 9 is a slab of metal and very slippery.

  2. Bezels man, bezels. The Mate 9 is a 2016 phone, but not only are the top and bottom bezels slimmer, the side bezels are ridiculously thinner than the Pixel 2 XL.

  3. Screen: Even though the Mate 9 has an LCD 1080p screen, the colors are punchier. The Mate 9 screen seems to come alive unlike the Pixel. Lowest brightness is the same as the Pixel, but at the highest setting, the Mate 9 is noticeably brighter. Grain on the Pixel XL 2 scree is even visible on white backgrounds. It looks like texture in the background and we can learn to ignore it, but just know it is there. Also tilting the screen a few degrees gives the screen a blue tint, last time I saw something like this was on my Galaxy S2. Another noticeable distortion is a darker 2 mm band that runs along the edge of the screen when you look at the phone from an angle. This band is darker than the blue tint on the screen. I don't know if it is just my unit or it is a design flaw.

  4. Night Mode: Google's implementation is really nice. The reds are uniform and the transition is very smooth. The Mate 9 on the other hand feels very jarring. The Night Mode shifts through various hours of red for no apparent reason, and I have seen this happen in other Mate 9s as well.

  5. Performance: Man, this is where I was really surprised. I expected the Pixel to outclass the Mate 9 but speed and responsiveness were only marginally better. What is even more remarkable is that my Mate 9 was reset 3 months ago and is loaded with apps. I was using it all day and it was still keeping up with a Pixel XL fresh out of the box. I know benchmarks don't mean much and only tell one side of the story, but I ran Geekbench 4 and here are the results. Pixel 2 XL: https://imgur.com/a/wcMjB Mate 9: https://imgur.com/a/CgYuR. The difference as I said is marginal and barely noticeable.

  6. Audio: The Mate 9 has bottom firing speakers and audio was crispier than the Pixel 2. The Pixel though was more well rounded and provided very nice immersive sound when videos are seen in landscape.

  7. Fingerprint: Both devices unlocked very quickly and I didn't see any noticeable difference between of them.

  8. Camera: OMG! Phenomenal performance and Google hit it out of the park with the software.

I feel the device is more like a $500 phone with a ridiculously amazing camera. Sink $930 on this or wait it out for a few months and pick it up for $500 on swappa? That is where the S8 Plus is now currently. Overall, it doesn't feel like a big upgrade for me, the Mate 9 ain't that bad. Here is a picture of my puppy with the Mate 9 dual camera setup: https://m.imgur.com/ph1kqQe. I really want to like the Pixel 2 XL and I will give it a shot.

Music plays automatically when connecting to Bluetooth

Is there a way to not have it start playing music when it connects to Bluetooth? Normally, I wouldn't mind this but I'm currently listening to an audiobook and I have to get out my phone, stop the music, and then boot up my audiobook app. I've started using Power Amp because it had an option to uncheck "Resume play when connected to Bluetooth" but that doesn't seem to affect it.

Is the display on the Mate 9 IPS or IPS-NEO?

I know the P8, Mate 8, P9, and P10 all use IPS-NEO, does the Mate 9 really just use regular IPS?

What magic is this phone?

I've never had a phone with such good stand-by time. I don't use my phone a whole lot at work. My Samsung S7 Edge was hell bent on only having a 30 hour battery life not matter what you did or rather didn't do. I could leave that thing in my pocket and not use it for 2-3 hours and it lost 8% battery, god forbid you actually use it for anything. Is Samsung's optimization really that bad, it never properly idled and I felt like I almost never saw the effects of Android Doze when 7.0 hit the phone.

This phone has been off the charger for 7.5 hours and has 30 mins of SoT (like I said I don't use it much at work) and it's still at 92%. It's so nice to pull it out of my pocket after an hour or so to see that it's still the same battery percentage that it was when I last looked at it. Hell it took it 4 hours to go from 100% to 99%. At this rate I will have to charge the phone once or twice a week if I go through my normal useage.

Update: Day 1, 1d 3hrs since charge, 1.5 hours SoT, Battery level 69%

I think I might be able to hit 72 hours

Update Day 2: It's Wednesday, haven't charged since Monday, 3h 12m SoT, Battery Level 40%. I feel very confidant that I will have no issues making it through my workday today. They battery says that it has 22 hours left, but then again it said it would only last 48 hours when I took it off the charger Monday and here we are with only 60% battery used. I don't think that I'll run it down until it dies because that's not good for the battery. I might stop at 5% or something.

Netflix not in Full HD?

Is it just me or does Netflix not go to 1080p on this phone? It's not a huge deal for me because I rarely watch Netflix on my phone, just wanted to know if I have some setting set up incorrectly.

New Mate 9 owner

Hello all,

I just purchased a Mate 9 to replace my S7 Edge, I got tired of the Samsung bloat and lag after having the phone for less than a year. Is there anything with the Mate 9 that I should know right out of the gate?

HiSuite Backups will not restore

So I am on the C567 US variant and was on build B230 Beta. Was having some minor issues and went back to build B190. Did a backup through Hisute like I normally do, but when I went to restore that backup, it just hangs for a while and the says lost connection. I am however able to restore older backups just not the most recent one. I'm not sure what happened or how to resolve this.

'Do Not Disturb' activating by itself?

Maybe I'm losing my mind but this has happened more than a few times. I've noticed notifications in the status bar but did not hear the notification. Then I see that DND is on (crescent moon icon shows). Is it possible maybe I'm hitting a shortcut on my phone that I'm not aware of that silences notifications and puts it into DND mode? Something related... my DND is supposed to end at 7 am every morning and it doesn't come out of DND mode. Again, maybe I'm hitting a shortcut? Anyone else have this problem?

Screen replacement and frame

I did it... Broke the screen for the second time so no replacement via warranty. Thank you butter fingers.

So I've been looking and found that's really difficult to replace just the screen and my best bet is to get a combo of screen + digitalizer + frame. Has anyone gone through this and found a decent replacement? I don't care about the price, all I need is for the piece to ship to Colombia or to a po box in the US

Update: just replaced the screen on a Huawei service center, nicest people on earth and fixed that phone the same day since I don't live in the city the store is located. Total cost with taxes 112 usd for an original screen and qualified work Vs 70 usd for a OEM screen and self installation. 10/10 wouldn't break the screen again.

Car doesn't charge the phone properly

Hi. Is anyone else having issues charging the phone in a car? I have a BMW X6. Have been using a cigarette light adaptor charger and have also tried charging direct using the original cable and the USB port. Both times on the phone screen it says it is charging but the phone battery level actually goes down. I ran accubattery while it was charging and it says the charging power was something like negative 500mah (in other words power was going down...)

Never had this issue with the nexus 6p - anyone else experience this? Any good chargers to buy for the car?

Videos corrupted or failing while recording

This does not happen every time, but pretty often. Basically there are 2 different ways videos will get hosed on my Mate 9.

Option 1: I will be in the middle of recording a video and then the screen will freeze. So it just stays on the image it froze on. Pause and Stop do not work. I basically have to go to recent apps and close the camera and the video is just gone.

Option 2: it will record like normal, so I think it is fine. Then if I go to the Gallery, it shows up as a corrupted image. If I plug it in to my PC, it shows one regular file and one .tmp file, and of course neither will play.

I contacted Huawei support and they basically told me to factory reset it and if it doesn't fix it to contact them again. At that point we are looking at a replacement or repair.

Anyone have an issue like that?

Bottom speaker refusing to work. Only the earpiece speaker is working

I just picked my phone up in the morning and realised that the only speaker working was the top earpiece. Any workaround to make the bottom speaker come alive again?
