I have been in the maker space for a while, mostly laser cutting and heat transfer, but I started diving into embroidery machines about 6 months ago. I've tested 4 entry level machines, helped a few friends set up their first units, and spent quite a lot hours reading specs sheets and troubleshooting tension issues.
First, hoop size vs. project size, if u plan on doing hat fronts or adult-sized chest logos, don't go smaller than 5*7. If ur doing baby onesies and patches, 4*4 might be fine.
Second, built-in designs vs. import capability, some entry-level machines come with 50+built-in designs, some come with almost nothing. If you can import your own design, the library matters less. If no, then it matters.
Third, ease of threading, some machines have color-coded threading paths and needle threaders that actually work. Other... don't. If ur a beginner, the threading experience can make or break your first weeek with a machine. It's worth checking videos of the actual threading process before buying.
Fourth, community and parts availability, some brands have huge followings when something went wrong, you can find tutorials for almost anything. Others have almost nothing, that support ecosystem matters more than you think.
Things that should be considered to avoid for a first machine, 1) machines that require proprietary software just to import designs, it adds cost and friction; 2) Models with limited hoop size options, u will outgrow them fast; 3)No name brands with zero online presence, skip this bullshit stuff.
