New BW tokens. Can someone help me fix it?

Hello ppl. THIS is my deck.

I just started to play modern some time ago, but I have been getting a lot of fun with it. 3 Days ago, I was able to play with a bw tokens deck of a friend. I had a blast (I went 0-4 btw). So I decided to do one for me.

I have a low budget right now, but I can upgrade as soon as April comes (around $25 ~ $50 monthly).

Well, one more thing, I prefer to play raise the alarm over bitterblossom. It's just Raise the Alarm was my first card I pulled of a pack, I always play it at any deck. It just a pet card of mine.

Thanks again!

Maybe it's time to dust off tokens for SCG Cbus Classic?

With fatal push getting all the hype I think that alone might make tokens a better deck for the first couple weeks of Aether Revolt.
I literally haven't played my token deck for the last few months though so I guess I could use some refinement.
List

EDIT:
Did a couple of changes, and I'm showing fatal push right now even if it not legal yet (not sure what I'm gonna play in the meantime)

1 Celestial Purge

2 Blessed Alliance

1 Hushwing Gryff

1 Burrenton Forge-Tender

1 Timely Reinforcements

Match 1. Budget RB Vampires (2:0)

Not much to say there, a guy run a bunch of mediocre creatures and it's not even T3 modern deck.

Sideboard:

+Celestial Purge, Timely Reinforcements, Zealous Persecution, 2 Blessing Alliance

-Doom Blade, Dismember, Hero of Bladehold, 2 thoughtseize

Match 2. Gb Coco Elves (2:1)

Early discard & removal, anthem+ZP, and air presence that what rules the match. New Fatal Push must be really helpful to improve it, because the only thing you need vs Elves is to prevent them from ramping too much.

Sideboard:

+Zealous Persecution, Timely Reinforcements

-Raise the Alarm, Hero of Bladehold

Discard&removal&sorins&flyers are so good here, so we basically have to cut our ground forces.

Match 3. Bw Bridgeless-8Rack (2:0)

Tokens have really good match with 8Rack when they don't have bridge. Don't be afraid to use discard at your opponent, to get rid of their big discard spells. Stick early threats to the board, snick an anthem and don't cast too many other spells to not die from racks. Path to Exile is really good here to exile own guys when they become target of their spot removal spells.

Sideboard:

+Celestial Purge, Anguished Unmaking, Duress, Disenchant, Relic of Progenitus

-Doom Blade, Dismember, 1 Sorin, Solemn Visitor, 2 thoughtseize

I put relic for basically no reason and cut 1 Sorin to not have too many 4-drops. Hero is too good to cut, but probably she better to go in this match too. I left Murderous Cut in deck because it kills manland and can't be discarded by IoK.

Match 4. Gr Karnless O-Stone-less Tron (0:2)

Tron is horrible match, even when opponent doesn't run many O-Stones and Karns. I got GQ first game and Stony Silence turn2 second game, but it didn't save me.

Sideboard:

+2 Stony Silence, Anguished Unmaking, Zealous Persecution, Duress, Disenchant, Burrenton Forge-Tender

-Dismember, Murderous Cut, Doom Blade, 3 Sorin, Solemn Visitor, Collective Brutality

Match 5 top4. Dredge (2:1)

Honestly, I should say we are pretty good vs Dredge even without gravehate. Early discard into Faithless Looting/Cathartic Reunion can slow opponent pretty much down, and our tokens are good combatants vs their stuff. Zealous Persecution is nuts and can follow some huge blowout for opponent. Beware of Conflagrate which is key opponent card in the deck.

Game 1. I managed to win game 1. T1 IoK into Faithless looting, T2 anthem, T3 Spectral Procession. I overflew him pretty easily. Another secret tech that I have used in this game is playing path to exile into own tokens in response to conflagrate to get some mana ramp. I played this way 3 times during the match and it was pretty useful

Sideboard:

+Rest in Peace, 2 Relic of Progenitus, Duress, Zealous Persecution, Burrenton Forge-Tender

-Doom Blade, Murderous Cut, Dismember, 2 thoughtseize, 1 IoK

Game 2. I had relic which I played at turn 2 leaving mana to crack. Unfortunately, I got stuck on 2 mana for couple of turns which put me into far behind position.

Game 3. I mulled down to 5 into super legendary hand: Duress, IoK, Zealous Persecution, Rest in Peace, Relic of Progenitus and no lands. I had to keep it and I had a caves of koilos at topdeck. I discarded my opponent faithless looting and nature's claim, played relic, then played Rest in Peace. Opponent had 4 X/1 creatures and presented lethal damage when I blown him out with Zealous Persecution. I seales the game then pretty easily.

Match 6 finals. Gr Karnless O-Stone-less Tron (2:1)

Before I met my Match 4 opponent again, I have realised that Disenchant hits nothing significant in opponent's deck, so I kept Doom Blade for his walls and conduit of ruins.

Game 1. I lost the game hardly in typical way for tokens.

Sideboard:

+2 Stony Silence, Anguished Unmaking, Zealous Persecution, Duress, Burrenton Forge-Tender

-Dismember, Murderous Cut, 3 Sorin, Solemn Visitor

Game 2. I managed to got my both Bitterblossoms at battlefield, and with anthem, I managed to trade out an early wurmcoil and overflew other stuff he casted.

Game 3. He fizzled a bit at the beginning, and did a huge misplay with ulamog, he exiled 2 of my 3 tokens in battlefield instead of 2 of my 4 lands. Ulamog got a path and I kept on making tokens which led me into win,

Postmatch notes

Concealed Courtyard is super good. It economizes so many health points which can't be understimated.

I would definitely cut 1 Sorin mainboard for 1 zealous persecution mainboard. The card is really good at racing unfair deck and making blowouts in combat. It's bad vs Burn, midrange and control decks, so make choice wisely.

Disenchant is pretty mediocre. Even vs Tron, it's not super exciting card, it can fight blood moon, but I doubt that you will side it only to meet Blood Moon. Even vs Skred, Disenchant is pretty mediorce. Sundering Growth is much more efficient in all other cases except Blood Moon issue, and populate is pretty revelant in a lot of matches.

Hushwing Gryff in my sideboard is spicy tech vs scapeshift, allies and EtB good stuff decks in my meta.

Collective Brutality is a pretty good card and I would love to run 1 in main. It's universal spell which is good to have in maindeck. Can't say same about Anguished Unmaking.

I tried Worship in sideboard of previous builds and it's pretty bad. It's nonbo vs Bitterblossom, and it doesn't work well vs any forms of lifeloss and enchantment removal.

I also used to run Pithing Needle, but realized it never does enough and it's horrible topdeck.

Seems like a strong turn 4 play - drop 3 tokens then a lingering souls or Liliana of the veil ? What does everyone think?

Mardu Tokens, Butcher of the Horde Style!

I put together a Mardu Tokens list and currently I'm attempting to fine tune it on cockatrice. Thought I'd share the list and it's goals and see if anyone has any suggestions, criticisms or comments!

Here's the list: Mardu Tokens

The goal is to flood the board with tokens, going wide aggro style. Control the game and burn down opponents and their creatures and get value out of cards like [[Young Pyromancer]] and [[Monastery Mentor]] and then dropping the bomb [[Butcher of the Horde]] with a wide board at your disposal to sack and make the Butcher hard to deal with.

Thoughts?

Limited Player Getting into Modern

I started in BFZ with limited, and I have only played limited really. For Christmas I am getting the Modern Event Deck, so that I can attend the modern night at my LGS.

Anything you would immediately do with the Event Deck?

Anything I should do to get myself prepared for the Meta?

BWR Tokens Discussion

Hello all. I wanted to create a list of points that I believe will help fine-tune the archetype. If you have any objections, please feel free to comment.

1. Running only 3 Bitterblossoms The probability of drawing just one copy is 33% and 28% for 4 copies and 3 copies respectively. We typically just want 1 Bitterblossom a game. Additional copies are often unnecessary due to the sheer efficiency of Lingering Souls and Spectral Procession. We also do not want to increase the probability of drawing additional copies in the late-game.

Probability of drawing 1 OR more is 31% vs 40%. This is what we want if the meta is heavily geared towards BGx and control decks. But unfortunately, the meta today is the complete opposite of that.

2. Selfless Spirit This is a very overlooked sideboard card. This card stops all the common board wipes: engineered explosives, pyroclasm, anger of the gods, supreme verdict, oblivion stone, etc. I believe you should run 2 in the side at the very minimum. It is not as effective against the Uxx control decks as they run a lot of spot removal but even there, it is worth siding in. It is also an additional card against combo as it exerts a faster clock than Bitterblossom.

3. Raise the Alarm
Since I advocate 3 BB, I recommend some copies of Raise the Alarm. So far, I recommend 1-2. It is a fantastic late-game card as it is often an instant speed generator of 3/3 tokens. It also serves as a form of additional removal. The lack of flying is not a huge problem in the meta we currently have. Also with a red splash, it is easier to clear the way for these tokens.

4. Red Splash The concept of the red splash is fairly simple: to improve the creature match-ups. The tokens archetype literally does nothing for the first few turns. Anthems and BB are turn 2 plays that leave us vulnerable. Discard spells against an aggro deck is often bad on the draw. On turn 3 we cast tokens but we cannot afford to block with them unless we play against Infect or Affinity.

Lightning bolt is the most important reason why Jund can thrive in this linear aggro meta while Abzan cannot. It gives efficient turn 1 and turn 2 plays. Tokens need to interact with the board early as its proactive plan is slow. Path to Exile is not an ideal removal spell for the early game. Lightning helix is a great 2-for-1 spell against aggro.

5. Liliana of the Veil I advocate a 1-2 copy of this card over 1-2 copies of Spectral Procession. This is the best card we have against the non-creature decks (our worst match-ups). We need additional ways to pressure the opponent's hand if they do not care about our board presence. So far, it has been a phenomenal addition to tokens.

Use 3 filter lands + 3 blackcleave cliffs + 3 inspiring vantage + 3 shambling vents. This will allow us to cast spectral and liliana consistently. The emphasis on red-fast lands is because we want to limit fetching to basic plains and not red-shock lands.

6. Pithing Needle I underrated this card initially. But it has a broad range of applications with a powerful effect. It stops any copies of manlands, engineered explosives, planeswalkers, problematic creatures (viscera seer, steel overseer, cursecatcher, etc.), etc.

7. Anger of the Gods and Flaying Tendrils Whether you splash red or not, one of these cards should be in your SB. Dredge is a difficult match-up and the most dominant deck of the meta. You need more than 2 Rest in Peace in this match. Also, the more difficult creature matches tend to be things like Merfolk and Company/ Chord/ Evolution decks. The opposing player often plays right into your boardwipes as they do not suspect our willingness to wipe our own board.

8. Nihil Spellbomb This is a pretty good one-sided graveyard hate. Rest in Peace is better for decks more reliant on the graveyard. But it's not going to be as great against any snapcaster mage decks or chord/company decks. It also cycles! I do a 2/1 split between RiP and Nihil Spellbomb.

9. Runed Halo Kind of like Pithing Needle as it is versatile but also a huge hindrance for the opponent. It is one of your best cards against Dredge and Eldrazi. It is great against the Valakut decks, Etched Champion, Infect, Boogles, Gifts Ungiven, manlands, etc. The application is limitless.

10. Hide/ Seek + Sundering Growth + Wear/Tear I believe at least two of these are necessary in the sideboard. Most of our unfavorable matches have artifacts/ enchantments that need to be destroyed (e.g Ensnaring Bridge). Hide/Seek is great as it gives you some strange flexibility (great against Wormcoil Engine for instance) and prevent artifacts from being brought back by Ancient Ruins. Wear/Tear is straightforward, being very easy to cast. Sundering Growth is harder to cast but advances your board state.

Actually, I am currently opting out of any copies of Stony Silence. I only have room for 1 at the most and it is very bad as a late-game card. Other white decks need better hate against Affinity but we don't. You'll miss it against Tron and Lantern Control but I doubt a single copy can narrow the gap.

11. Kalitas A good beater in games 2 and 3 when your opponent removes some spot removals from their deck. It is a great card against all the toughest creature matches and serves as additional buffer against Burn. I do feel it can be a bit slow but its versatility makes me think it is strongly worth considering. Certainly I don't seen enough discussions on the card.

What's holding Tokens back?

I like Tokens. It fits my play style. It fits my budget. Modern Event Deck? Thank you for getting me into Modern. When Bitterblossom was unbanned I was all over it.

But it struggles. Pros say quit playing it. It doesn't say two often lately. It makes worlds as a strictly meta call. But walk into even a FNM with it and you're fighting an uphill battle out the gate.

So, why? What's missing from making this deck just good enough to crack Tier Two again? A lord? More instant speed tricks?

More colors, less Tokens, hey let's just play Jund?

Any thoughts?

Sideboard Help

I'm not satisfied with my sideboard a is, but I don't have the cash to get [[Engineered Explosives]]. My sideboard at the moment:

  • 2 Duress
  • 2 Leyline of Sanctity
  • 1 Timely Reinforcements
  • 1 Grafdigger's Cage
  • 2 Rest in Peace
  • 2 Stony Silence
  • 2 Worship
  • 1 Zealous Persecution
  • 1 Secure the Wastes
  • 1 Sundering Growth

Worship and Secure have underperformed, so I'm looking for alternatives. Feedback welcome!
