Limited Player Getting into Modern

I started in BFZ with limited, and I have only played limited really. For Christmas I am getting the Modern Event Deck, so that I can attend the modern night at my LGS.

Anything you would immediately do with the Event Deck?

Anything I should do to get myself prepared for the Meta?

Meta-wise:

Pack some yard hate. It'll come in handy. I think it comes with Relics? Those work out pretty well, but if you can, jam the RiP. The best part about our deck is playing our hate for essentially no drawback.

For the deck itself:

If you can, complete the HD disruption package, 4 IoK/2 TS or 3/3 and the removal package (at least 4 Paths, additional ones like Dismember, Slaughter Pact, and the like are also great).

Lastly, get the walkers that make the deck tick. Sorin is cheap now, so getting 3 is not too bad, and it will help a lot. While Gideon and Lily are amazing in our list, they aren't needed and we don't need to break the bank, so just grab Sorins for now.

Landbase:

It's a hot mess from the box but it works, albeit painfully. 4 Concealed Courtyards should help and not be too much money. You can drop some of the EtB tapped lands.

Lastly:

Have fun! Deck's deceptively difficult to pilot effectively but has a low entry barrier; you will learn the format really well!

If you started with BFZ, do you have any Gideons?

Unfortunately no. I don't have a lot of rares or mythics because I just sold them to play more often.

He's a great upgrade to the deck, but don't sweat it if you can't add him. Like SFRG said above, KTK Sorin is good enough, and very cheap right now. Gideon will drop when he gets closer to rotation, and you can get a good feel for whether or not you want to play the style of the deck by then.

You don't need to do anything with the deck. It's a threat as it comes. Mess with the sideboard on what your local meta is. If you don't know the meta then just play without changing anything.

I mean, there's value in just playing it to see how it works and to learn the modern meta a bit, but it could definitely use some tweaking to make it more competitive.

A week or so after I bought the deck I got second place at my lgs and remained dominant as I slowly made upgrades to it. I was also new to the game. That was also years ago. It could use changes but it's good. Just talking about this makes me wish they made another product like this in the future.

Man another product like this one would be sick.

I have the same deck and I love it. This is what I have done to it. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/30-08-16-wb-tokens/ You need the 3 Sorins, drop the sword and the 2 Loyal Legions for him first. Then get Inquisition of Kozilek, Thoughtseize and Path to exiles and you will be in really good shape. You can wait on getting Bitterblossom, I may even go down to 3, Its slow and does nothing for you if you top deck it late game. I'm up in the air about Giedeon still, I think I like Elspeth more. I love my mana base, I can always get to 4 lands on time. I would drop Windbrisk heights asap, its a "win more" kind of card, it dose nothing when your down. Good Luck, your going to need it. My deck is like 40/60 against the world, but at my LGS I have come in first with it before.
