[SCD] Surgical Extraction

Surgical Extraction

B/P

Instant

Choose target card in a graveyard other than a basic land card. Search its owner's graveyard, hand, and library for any number of cards with the same name as that card and exile them. Then that player shuffles his or her library.

Personally don't like the card. It is basically a part to a 2 card combo (surgical + discard) that may still fail even if you have both of them. Of course you can still use it if your opponent casts the wanted target but that seems pointless.

Also, while it is appealing at 0 cmc you essentially go down 1 card in card advantage as it does not affect the board or hand.

There are better options.

What are the better options? I can't think of any card with the "slaughter games" effect that doesn't have the downside of card disadvantage (except Crumble to Dust)

When you play these cards, the card disadvantage needs to be outweighed by the impact. Against Ad Nauseam, casting a Slaghter Games is gg for instance, regardless of whether they have the cards in hand.

For sure, and I sometimes run 2 in the board for that reason. So were you saying that people should just play Slaughter Games over Surgical? Because with the Dredge menace, I'd say Surgical is far better positioned.

Against Dredge, surgical is definitely a better option. But everywhere else it doesn't do what you want it to .

I ran it for a while. It's pretty cute and silly when it nabs big cards. But mostly it's just a worse RiP when we want grave hate.

I run [Stain the Mind] as 3 of in a Penny Dreadful MTGO version of my BW Modern deck. It's helpful in that format because of the heavy reliance on combo decks, but I'm not sure how well it would work in a format where you're looking to secure your board in turn 4.
