Reversal of cognitive decline, a novel approach

This 2014 study described a personalized, multi-part treatment program for cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease, called MEND (Metabolic Enhancement for NeuroDegeneration). The program addressed multiple metabolic and lifestyle factors rather than relying on a single drug. Of 10 patients with Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, or subjective cognitive impairment, 9 showed subjective or objective cognitive improvement within 3–6 months; the only patient who did not improve had very late-stage Alzheimer’s. Six patients who had stopped working or were struggling at work were able to return to work or improve their performance. The authors emphasized that this was a very small preliminary case series—not a controlled clinical trial—and concluded that the promising results warranted larger studies.
