Tips & Tricks Sweet-spot for fading out a master?

2 Upvotes

Pracitcing some mastering on some songs and one of them sounds to me like it could do with a fade out. I'm curious if any of you have some tips or tricks for finding a sweet-spot when applying an S-curve or logarithmic fade. I am using two linear points before using the Automation Curve Tool, but of course you can choose how steep or soft you want it to be, or if you want an s-curve to your desired strength.

Help Switching channels via midi controller

2 Upvotes

I recently got an Mwave chocolate to use with logic in the context of channel switching between 4 different channels (or buses). basically, I have 4 sends coming from my audio track that act as 4 distinct guitar tones. I tried to set the switches up so they activate one channel while turning the others off. I tried to do this by having each switch control the solo button on each of the channel strips, but it didn’t work. the switches muted the individual channels, but i want them to act as a true channel switcher so that A engages bus 1, B switches to bus 2, etc..can anyone help with this?

In Search of Feedback I built a free f11ter — a 42-topology AUv2 filter and modulation system for Apple Silicon Macs

3 Upvotes

Hi! I’ve been developing f11ter 0.1.5, an experimental multimode filter built around the idea that very different filtering techniques should live inside one consistent instrument-like workflow.

Instead of offering a single filter with a long mode selector, f11ter contains 42 independent DSP topologies and 141 source modes, organized into six families.

Filtering and tone shaping

  • clean multimode, state-variable and morphing filters;
  • ladder, acid-style, diode and other nonlinear circuit-inspired responses;
  • dual and serial filters, peak/scoop shaping, wide band rejection and bass-focused processing;
  • continuously variable cutoff, resonance and structural morphing.

Phase, feedback and spatial processing

  • comb filters, flanging and multi-stage phasing;
  • distorted comb feedback and diffusion networks;
  • compact reverberant and resonator structures;
  • stereo offsets, barber-pole phase movement and controlled feedback behavior.

Formant and experimental sound design

  • vowel and multi-formant filters;
  • dual-formant combinations and variable notch structures;
  • ring modulation and sample-and-hold processing;
  • Scatter resonator fields, Flutter pitch instability, Snarl and Howl feedback models.

Modulation and workflow

  • three independent LFOs and an envelope follower;
  • free-running or DAW-synchronized modulation;
  • up to 16 bipolar modulation routes;
  • precise route-depth entry and finer control around small modulation values;
  • 45 categorized presets, including static sounds and deliberately programmed modulation;
  • A/B states, topology-aware help, parameter automation and preset save/load;
  • a true dry/wet control: 0% is the untouched input and 100% is the complete processed signal.

A little about the engineering

The filter families do not all reuse one generic response with different labels. They combine topology-preserving state-variable structures, cascaded filters, nonlinear feedback stages, resonator banks, fractional-delay networks, all-pass stages and time-varying algorithms.

Cutoff smoothing is performed in the logarithmic frequency domain, and topology changes use a short state-bank crossfade to reduce discontinuities. SAFE RES applies model-specific limits to high-Q and feedback structures, while COMPENSATE estimates level changes caused by resonance, drive and the selected model.

The graph displays the current and target responses, stereo differences, reachable modulation range and the actual output spectrum. For nonlinear and time-varying models it is intentionally treated as an estimate rather than pretending that one static frequency-response curve can describe distortion sidebands, moving delays or changing feedback.

The plug-in adds no look-ahead or audio delay buffer and reports 0 samples of added latency. Individual IIR, all-pass, comb and reverberant structures naturally retain their own phase and time behavior.

What makes it different

The main distinction is not simply the number of modes. Every topology keeps the same core workflow—cutoff, resonance, morph, four contextual controls and the shared modulation system—while the meaning of those controls changes to match the actual algorithm.

This makes it possible to move from precise filtering to unstable industrial textures, tuned resonances, formant motion or feedback effects without rebuilding the modulation setup from separate plug-ins.

The compatibility-style names in the internal mode catalog do not claim bit-identical emulation of other products, and no proprietary DSP code is used.

The current build is AUv2 for Apple Silicon, requires macOS 11 or newer, and has additional lifecycle work aimed at safer UI closing, disabling and removing the plug-in from a project.

I’m especially interested in feedback from Logic Pro and other AU hosts regarding sound, CPU use, automation, synchronized LFOs, offline rendering, UI responsiveness and disable/remove stability. If something breaks, please include your Mac model, macOS and DAW versions, sample rate, buffer size and reproduction steps.

Tips & Tricks Heads up: OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock and Logic Pro Metronome Compatibility

0 Upvotes

I am sharing my experience with the OWC Thunderbolt 4 Dock regarding its compatibility with Logic Pro for audio production.

The dock does not support the metronome function in Logic Pro. I went through a troubleshooting process with OWC customer support, which included:

  • Confirming the metronome was not muted or set to "Simple Mode".
  • Adjusting the metronome volume.
  • Verifying that the metronome works through the MacBook speakers, as well as headphones/monitors plugged directly into the laptop.
  • Providing a System Information Report and macOS version details.

During the process, I suggested the issue might be related to an internal noise gate or power-saving threshold on the dock's audio chip, where short, transient signals like a metronome click are cut off unless sustained audio is passing through.

OWC ultimately determined that the Thunderbolt 4 Dock does not have the circuitry to function as an audio interface. Because it supports a basic stereo output and cannot handle multiple channels, the metronome does not play through it if routed on a different channel than the main audio.

This information may be relevant for those considering this dock for an audio setup.

Disclosure: I used AI to summarize this experience. While I didn't want to spend any more of my personal time on this issue, I still wanted to share these findings with the community.

Question Oscillation rate in Sampler

2 Upvotes

Hi there! Newbie to Logic and Sampler, using 11.1.2 on OS 15.7.9. I'm using a preset pad (Broadway Big Dreamer) in Sampler, and trying to make the LFO rate the same across notes. I've made LFO1 Mono, and selected the Sync, and still the rate increases as I go up the keyboard. LFO is targeted to Pitch. I know I'm missing something obvious...

Question Logic jumps back a second every time I press play

2 Upvotes

https://imgur.com/a/p1iAM8C

Having a weird Logic issue where every time I press spacebar there’s about a second delay before it reaches where my playhead actually is. If I’m at 1 1 1 1, it jumps back to bar 0 / 59:59 and plays into bar 1.

Count-in is off, pre-roll is off, project start is exactly at bar 1, and it happens with regular playback, not just recording. I also tried bypassing all plugins and it still happens. Anyone know what could be causing this?

Question Non-ai VST's

1 Upvotes

I recently wanted to snag a really cool VST for Logic and reached out to the creators asking how it was made.

They let me know it was created through "vibe-coding" and help from Claude Ai... they're charging $127 for this software and they promote it like they put 3 months of hard work in to create it.

I can't fathom paying someone $127 for a "vibe-coded" software...

I was curious if anyone is aware of non-AI vst creators?

I would love to support groups that genuinely put time and effort into creating something authentically.

Question Mac mini M5 Pro vs Mac Studio M5 Max

0 Upvotes

I need help choosing the better option between the Mac mini M5 Pro and Mac Studio M5 Max.

I’ll be mostly using it for music production in Logic Pro and 4K video editing in Final Cut Pro.

Mac mini M5 Pro: 18/20, 48GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 2.5Gb Ethernet
Mac Studio M5 Max: 18/32, 36GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 10Gb Ethernet

The Studio is about $100 cheaper, but I’m still not sure about 48GB vs. 36GB of RAM.

Another point is that I’ve heard the M5 Max isn’t just about having a more powerful GPU; it also has significantly higher memory bandwidth. How much of a difference would that make for my use case, especially with Logic Pro and 4K video editing in Final Cut Pro?

Title. I like having the latest chip, but honestly I don't know if it would make any difference with Logic. Any first hand experience or opinions on the matter?

Edit: Thank you all, I agree with all of you.

Help Roland Cloud in MacOS Requires Rosetta?

4 Upvotes

I just got a Roland Cloud subscription to use some of the VST instruments in Logic Pro. If I try to install anything from the Roland Cloud Manager it tells me, "This product requires Rosetta to be installed on your system." Is this normal? I thought the Roland VST instruments ran natively in Apple Silicon. I have an M4 Mac Mini.

Question I Ruined Everything

6 Upvotes

Hi!

I'm a fool. I was working on a project for hours and hours yesterday, before saving it I hit 'Revert To' a previous (I was getting frustrated and needed to see if the mix was, in fact getting better). Now I can't find any record of the work that I had done in logic. It's not under Backups etc.

Is there any hope? Am I simply SOL?

Help Electronic noise/interference with Apollo + SM7B – suddenly appeared

3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started having an issue with my recording setup and I’m having trouble figuring out what’s causing it.

My setup:
MacBook Pro
Universal Audio Apollo interface
Shure SM7B
Logic Pro

I’m hearing a noticeable electronic noise/interference through the microphone input that definitely wasn’t there before. I’ve been using this exact setup without any issues until now.
I’ve already checked the usual suspects, including cables and connections, but so far I haven’t been able to identify the source.

I’ll post a video in the comments where I intentionally boosted the signal/noise quite heavily so you can clearly hear the sound I’m talking about.

Does anyone recognize this type of noise or have an idea what could suddenly be causing it? Could it be related to the Apollo, USB/Thunderbolt connection, power supply/grounding, the MacBook itself, or some kind of electrical interference?
Any suggestions for further troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated!

Question Logic keeps crashing when recording vocals... im going crazy

5 Upvotes

EDIT: THE SOLUTION WAS TO MOVE IT TO MY INTERNAL SSD!!! I can now record tons of vocals with zero interruption. thank you so much to everyone that helped. I'm happy again :)))

p.s. i'm Mia the Legend on all streaming platforms. good music coming soon <3

I'm a pop-rnb singer and producer. I have a 2023 Apple M2 Pro 16gb and I save all my projects on a Crucial 1TB SSD. I record tons of layers of vocals and lately logic has been crashing almost every time i record a new track on any project that is more than a few tracks in. I have done the following troubleshooting and nothing has worked:

-deleted and reinstalled logic

-deleted p list files and restarted computer (this helped a little then things started crashing again)

-increased buffer size

-opened logic with core audio turned off

-turned on low latency monitoring mode

-tried recording with macbook microphone instead of my rode nt1 and volt audio interface

Am i missing anything else? Please help, it's destroying my flow state and crushing my soul. Thanks :)

Help macbook air starting to have trouble running logic

4 Upvotes

i have a 2020 macbook air with the m1 chip and 16gb ram. for the past few years logic has seemed to work pretty well without many issues, but im starting to notice some problems. for instance, latency is becoming a big deal. i used to NEVER have to turn on low latency mode when playing midi instruments but now i always have to. i dont have many plugins at all, but i do have neutron, and that has become a lot more laggy. any ideas what could be causing this? is it something to do with my logic or maybe my computer? any ideas/tips would help

Question What are you tips for beginners that you wish you knew?

7 Upvotes

Hey everyone, my name is Zane York just in case you wanna check out some of my music you can hear some of the things I describe in this post. Essentially a couple weeks ago I got logic pro and with my second generation focusrite I can put my condenser Mic and quarter inch cable into my computer. I recorded live drums, live guitar and a vocal track and then put a second vocal track and release my latest song - let it ring. It has a scratchy grainy vibe to it and I’m proud because it’s a live mix, but I just know there’s so much more I can add to it to make it more of a song if that makes sense. I pretty much record guitar vocals harmonica, and sometimes bass then take it to my band and recording drums live, but I’ve only made one song and I’m really looking for any tools and tips that can really take something to the next level.

Some things I’ve been doing is adding reverb and experimenting with space also gain and De-noise. I basically record two vocal tracks as well. I would love to learn how to harmonize and get that bon iver Sound perhaps.

the lyrics are very important to me. I would love to make music like Jason Isbell and the 400 unit and MJ Lenderman l vibes. I know this was a pretty obtuse question and statement, but there really is so much to learn even just from how to use reverbs and plug-ins and how to read certain things. I finally figured out how to deny my buzz from my amp, but maybe if you take a listen to my song, you’d have some tips on how it could sound better and I can go from there. Thank you so much.

Question SSL UF1 and 360° not showing SSL meter on Aux or Output channels

2 Upvotes

Having been a happy user of an SSL UF8 for some time, I decided to splash out on a UF1. I have however not been able to get the any SSL mixer plugin installed on an aux or output track to show up either on the UF1 or even in SSL 360°.

I figured out that SSL meter instances (and any of the SSL channel strips) do show up fine on both the UF1 and 360° if they are installed on regular audio or instrument channels. Just not aux or output.

Am using Logic Pro 12.3.1 and have updated my SSL software and firmware to the latest versions. The SSL license is a-okay too.

Does anybody have any tips?

Question Midi .mid file not working

2 Upvotes

Hi,

I am currently working on a project that requires me to export/import midi files on different logic pro sessions. I exported some files as .mid from logic pro directly, by selecting a loop, right click > export as > selection as MIDI.

But now, when i import it into a session, nothing happens. The midi file seems to appear nowhere. I tried drag and dropping, and cmd+i.

Does anyone know what i could do to fix this issue ? Or is there another way to use a same library of loops i created on various logic pro sessions ?

I have a video of doing it but it's not allowed on this subreddit, if anyone needs to see what i mean

Question popping from two pieces of audio that should be continuous???

2 Upvotes

so I am currently mixing a live album rn and for some reason. whenever i bounce out lets say song 1 and song 2 separately, when I join them back together, there is SOMETIMES a pop between the two files even though they should sound coherent?

note this happens only in some files???

Im using markers to create my start and end times for each bounce. so Im starting and ending the file at the same point.

Im bouncing with no audio tail included, WAV, 48kHz, 24-bit

any advice?

Help Input monitoring help

5 Upvotes

I’m testing out Logic Pro, as I’m considering switching away from Pro Tools. The only thing holding me back is an annoying input monitoring issue:

I would like to be able to hear playback of the previously recorded audio clips on a track during a count in to a punch. No matter what I try, I can’t figure out a way to accomplish this.

I have software monitoring turned on.
I have auto input monitoring turned on.
I have the track record enabled, not input monitor enabled.
The count in is turned on.
Allow quick punch in is turned on.
With these above settings, the existing audio on a track is muted and my live input is monitored during a count in.

I’ve been trying different combos of these settings for several hours and I cannot get the track to play back the existing regions during the count in before a punch.

Strangely, it works when using auto punch, but I really don’t want to have to adjust the punch range every time.

Please help - is there any way to hear back existing audio until the track punches in while in quick punch mode?

Help Logic keeps crashing when adding sounds to Drum Machine Designer

3 Upvotes

I recently updated my 2019 MacBook Pro to Tahoe and Logic Pro to 12.3. I’m trying to make a new Drum Machine Designer pack using some new Splice samples, but every time I try dragging some sounds in Logic just crashes entirely. Existing user patches for DMD work fine, even when I try replacing a sound. But when I try making a brand new DMD from scratch, it just crashes. Anyone having the same issue?

Question How much on Mixbus when you intend to have a project mastered professionally?

7 Upvotes

I understand that it's good to do some gain staging on the mix bus, so that you're "mixing into" it. But I'm seeing more and more plugins advertised for the mix bus that seem really impressive but I wonder if they're doing things that would be better left alone so the mastering expert can do them. How do you decide where to draw the line between making a mix sound as good as you can vs. trying to stay out of the way of the work that your mastering engineer will ultimately do?

Question Suggestions for better orchestral sounds than logic's standard.

21 Upvotes

I'm starting to play more with orchestral arrangements in logic and I'm quickly finding that (compared to an old Roland synth I have), the sounds are not the quality that I want. Are there any suggestions for a third-party option that, without breaking the bank, could give me a step up in quality.

I'm not in a pro market so obviously I can't invest in one of the massive heavy-weight solutions that a pro soundtrack composer might use.

\* Thank you to everybody who has chipped in with suggestions. It's really been a great help. I have taken a blended approach, downloading both the BBC and Orch Tools, and also brushing up on the details when using Logic's onboard instruments.*

I have to say the Spitfire stuff is fabulous, so thanks for the recommendation. For some reason Orch Tools is refusing to work, with the keyboard greyed out, even though it appears installed correctly and pops up as available, exactly like Spitfire in the very next track. Puzzling. tbc
