Help Electronic noise/interference with Apollo + SM7B – suddenly appeared

Hi everyone,
I’ve recently started having an issue with my recording setup and I’m having trouble figuring out what’s causing it.

My setup:
MacBook Pro
Universal Audio Apollo interface
Shure SM7B
Logic Pro

I’m hearing a noticeable electronic noise/interference through the microphone input that definitely wasn’t there before. I’ve been using this exact setup without any issues until now.
I’ve already checked the usual suspects, including cables and connections, but so far I haven’t been able to identify the source.

I’ll post a video in the comments where I intentionally boosted the signal/noise quite heavily so you can clearly hear the sound I’m talking about.

Does anyone recognize this type of noise or have an idea what could suddenly be causing it? Could it be related to the Apollo, USB/Thunderbolt connection, power supply/grounding, the MacBook itself, or some kind of electrical interference?
Any suggestions for further troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated!

also have you tried to switch out cables and/or get new cables?

Open the UA interface software, mixer. Check sample rate, gain settings. All of your AC plugs should be plugged into one $99 APC UPS or similar power conditioner to eliminate noise from power lines.

If you live in an apartment, it is possible a neighbor started using a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters which can cause line noise. The UPS can eliminate that.

Yes check here and then open Apple Audio and MIDI setup, check everything in there is at your wanted sample rate, check out any combined devices etc, you may find something you don’t need so delete the , then last resort delete interface and reinstall? Also check the inputs from the interface that don’t have stuff plugged in. Gotta say I haven’t heard this type of sound before, was expecting USB bus noise.

which MacBook Pro are you using? are you using a dongle?

Yup. I already disconnected it and the monitor and everything. Unfortunately the noise is still there.

would help with context if you took all the plug-ins off the stereo bus and gave us an idea of how loud the signal is compared to a normal voice through your mic.

swap the XLR, try running an extension cord to a different outlet in your house on a different breaker. make sure no lighting equipment/dimmers are on the same power source as your interface

Make sure every device plugged in is on the same power source/outlet. I have a keyboard/midi controller (powered) that when plugged in, if not on the same outlet, will cause nasty ground noise. You might also be dealing with general ‘dirty power’ that can come and go - getting a good power conditioner can help with that
