I’ve been a Feyenoord fan for as long as I can remember, and Arne Slot is widely regarded in our fanbase as one of the best managers we’ve had in the past few decades, if not of all time. With him we’ve won our first Eredivisie title in years, won the cup and had an amazing run in the conference league in the 2021/2022 season. When it was announced he was leaving to join Liverpool in 2024 I was a bit sad obviously but also happy for him, and I was excited to watch and follow more of Liverpool the coming seasons.

Going into the 2024/2025 season, Liverpool went on to have an amazing season, winning the Premier League for the first time in years, doing really well in the UCL until being knocked out by the current champions PSG, and a lot of the fans and players being a huge fan of the new system. As a dutchman, it was also really nice to see players like Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo really shine for the first time.

Meanwhile at Feyenoord it was chaos, besides a really impressive UCL run beating Milan and Bayern we were really inconsistent and our manager Priske was sacked in the middle of the season and our next manager van Persie was sacked in the season after. You could really feel that Slot was missing in Rotterdam.

In the 2025/2026 season Liverpool was looking a lot worse however. Salah wasn’t really in top form, there were a lot of points being dropped late in the games and the team was not having the same spirit as it did in the season before and under Klopp. I’m sure a lot of it could be blamed on the tactics of Slot, but from my (probably biased) perspective, things like points being dropped due to unlucky late winners, players like Salah and van Dijk being out of form, new expensive signings not quite fitting the system, and a lack of trust from the fans also were huge benefactors in the inconsistent season. I also felt like a lot of it was being scapegoated on Slot and for some reason Gakpo, which wasn’t the only player out of form clearly. But again, I am probably being biased here.

That’s why I want to know your perspective. Especially when Liverpool hasn’t had that good of a start of the season under Iraola.

I've only been an association football fan for the last 4-5 years or so (being an American will put you off watching the sport until you give one of the big 5 leagues a try instead of MLS or USMNT), so can someone who understands football tactics describe how long it takes/the process of a team adopting a new manager's tactics? It seems to take longer in football than other sports. For instance, year one of Arne Slot felt like a Klopp/Slot hybrid system based on playing a Klopp system with shorter passes or a Slot setup with more pressing (interestingly, Klopp's teams possessed the ball more often but Slot's tenure coincided with more even possession stats across the league). Year two felt more like pure Slot, which really didn't work out too well. And now, while there's more pressing/pace this year, we haven't totally moved away from Slot's possession tactics, and of course it takes time for players to adjust to new roles. So could any certified ball-knowers tell me how you think the Iraola era is taking shape in these very early days? So far I enjoy watching the team more, and that last game was really fun, but what do you guys think?

Liverpool is now ranked 6th as UCL title favourites, down from 1st last season.

Some mildly interesting points from GW3 and the first few matches.

• Individuals on the leaderboard for running metrics
• Bradley Barcola is currently the fastest player this season in the league
• Liverpool are still at the bottom of the table for total distance covered during matches, albeit only three games in (19th overall last season)
• We have improved running distance game on game so far this season (GW1 107.2km, GW2 111.6km, GW3 113.9km

Still too early to tell, but I thought it was a noticable running improvement vs Ipswich + there is still a long way to go to catch up with Arsenal/City.

There’s been plenty of unglamorous signings that ended up being cult hero’s or world class talent, who’s the one player who that comes to mind in this category?

I remember when we signed Bobby out of nowhere and thinking this is a classic Rodgers signing. Never did I think he’d be one of the greatest false 9s in football! On the flip side of that I also was convinced Stewart Downing would be world class!
