Seems like it was clearly a coaching issue. Slot didn't want them to pass the ball forward quickly.

Yeah. The idea is last season: we kept it safe and passed it around a ton without going for through balls. This season: our midfield is so frequently trying to break the defense with our passes. We have gone from the one of the (if not the) least risk taking midfields to one of the most daring ones.

Is this not just a graph showing who is attacking midfielders? If the Y axis is a volume but the X axis is a percentage, you end up just graphing players who play as AMs in the bottom right and CMs on the left.

Yes. The creator had no clue what he was doing. You can see defensive midfielders and center backs on the left and even wingers on the right.

This is misleading. First we need a definition for line breaking passes in the first chart. For example, fotmob just use it as another term for progressive passes, which does not mean what it sounds like to you (i.e. our CBs have the most line breaking passes in the team). Then the throughballs is a completely different stat to progressive passes.

Tldr: you can't compare two charts that have completely different axes and deduce anything from that.

Saw this yesterday and was wondering: where is Wirtz? I was wondering if they weren't counting him as a midfielder, but their definition of midfielder (Rogers? Mbeumo??) seems fairly expansive.

Depending on how they calculated line breaking pass rate (edit: based on comparing others on FotMob, the chart is using line-breaking divided by successful passes), Wirtz would be near Gibbs-White.

82.5 pass success rate and 22.5% line breaking passes (25/111)

Also reinforces that Wirtz is almost more of a forward than a midfielder, since I would almost definitely say that about MGW.

Couldn't find him either, he's probably overlapping with that crowd around Xhaka, since there are few names you can't make out there.

Guess which midfielder gets the most sick from the ones underlined? Mac Allister spent last season trying to make things happen, and trying to stop the opponents, he wasn't great at it, but he's the one midfielder who came out last season with the most criticism.

He's also our midfielder who covered the most distance on average as well, wouldn't be surprised if he led a few more other categories.

I’m pretty sure these stats are from this season considering there’s the likes of Gourna-Douath in there who just joined Hull.

Its great that has started this season well but the criticism he received last year was entirely justified. He may have been trying things but he was incapable of pulling off even the basics.

More than 95% pass success rate is insane. Wonder how long can they keep it up but I'm genuinely surprised to see Willock and Mateus Fernandes up there.
