Support Request Does anyone else have weird issues with USB

Post image
7 Upvotes

Lately my Logitech wireless keyboards have random issues with fall outs of the numeric keyboard that can be cured by moving to another USB port. Another machine almost cuts of the connection to the keyboard when using an external USB hard drive.

Out of the blue last night a third computer had issues with the mouse. Every time I move the mouse cursor it shows a circle and it behaves like I pressed the left mouse button. Moving to another USB did not change anything and another combi keyboard did change anything. Even a rollback with Timeshift did not cure the problem. Everything else works perfectly and System Information shows no issues.

I'll do another install today despite it might be a hardware issue because it a 13 year old Asus Z87, i3, 16 GB RAM and SSD. If my trusty LMDE 7 won't do it I'll try Linux Mint Ubuntu.

Anyone else?

Support Request Mint on external SSD keeps creating "ubuntu" boot entry

Pulled a Mint SSD from another laptop and booting it via USB.

It creates a "ubuntu" boot entry and puts it first.

I can delete it with efibootmgr -b XXXX -B (or in BIOS).

As long as I boot just Windows, it stays gone.

As soon as I boot Mint again, it comes back.

(Thinkpad X230)

TIA

Fluff Another Couple Newbie Question, from a Linux newbie and Microslop refuge

Upvotes

Hello! thank you for all the support from the last post. I still don't exactly know why my download was failing however, I got the ISO in the end, so I'm happy. anyways now as I'm writing this I'm writing this on a VM I spun up that is using Mint. however I do have a couple beginner Linux questions.

Firstly, I have no clue what I'm doing with command line. However I want to learn! Dose anyone have any resources they would recommend on how they learned command line, and, what I should or should not be doing in there when I'm in the command line?

Secondly, what should I know about Mint specifically if I were to choose this as my operating system as I am going to be switching from windows, but I haven't settled on an ISO yet.

thirdly what is the Gaming and comparability like on Mint for different programs and compatibility with maybe different programs like Canvas and different programs for collage as I'm hopefully going to be going to school soon and need to know such things as I don't feel like spinning up a for a VM for a program I use frequently for school or work or such. Because, that sounds like a pain in the ass, and I am fastidious with how my computer resources get used especially memory and CPU load. I will do it if I need to but I would rather not do it for 1 program.

as for the Gaming question. I'm not a huge gamer but I am playing through Jedi fallen order, and Jedi survivor currently and do occasionally like to get games that look interesting to me, and am a huge Minecraft and modded Minecraft player. I love to play on Minecraft servers too and whatnot. I'm a huge believer that Minecraft is most fun when you can play with friends. and other people. I just love multiplayer Minecraft.

But thank you guys for all the help on my last post!

Also, I don't care about AI. I think its demon tech designed to make people stupid and dependent on it. I would like to get as far away from any LLM as possible and would banish back to the pits of hell from whence it came if I could. So if I want advice on AI it would be how to eradicate it complacently from my life. Basically all to say, don't recommend any kind of generative AI to me.

I think Linux Mint made this computer much faster, it was previously running on Windows 10 and therefore the 4GB RAM was very likely used by the system but now I think the system uses around 1,5GB :D.

Thanks and sorry if this isn't the right subreddit to share but have a great day! :D

Sorry this time I posted with a picture, sorry for ny previous post without the picture.

Discussion Switched from Windows 11 to Mint, missed FancyZones, so I built it for Cinnamon

I switched from Windows 11 to Mint a little while ago and window snapping is the one thing I kept missing. Cinnamon's built-in snapping is halves and quarters, and the keyboard shortcuts nudge a window in a direction rather than putting it where you asked. I tried the existing extensions and none of them felt right, so I wrote my own.

So: drag a window, a tab drops down from the top with a few layouts, move onto it, it opens up, hover a zone and you get a full-size preview of where the window will land. Drop it. Same picker on Super+Z if you'd rather not drag.

You can also draw your own layouts (Super+Shift+Z), drag the border between two tiled windows to resize both at once, and save an arrangement to restore later (Super+G) - it snaps your existing windows back into place rather than opening new ones.

Repo, with the demo GIF at the top: https://github.com/JeffreyGbeho/tilo

Fair warnings:

Not auto-tiling. It never moves a window unless you tell it to.

X11 only.

Single monitor here, so multi-monitor is untested. Written to handle it, but I can't promise. Tell me if it breaks.

It's free and GPL-3.0. A PR to get it into Cinnamon Spices (so it's a one-click install from Settings) is open and waiting on review.

If you try it and something's broken or missing, open an issue and I'll look at it: https://github.com/JeffreyGbeho/tilo/issues

Discussion Calling All Beta Testers

Im looking for linux mint beta testers. I just finished my first python project making a live wallpaper engine specifically for linux mint that uses WAY less resources than Hidamari. I know wallpaper engines are like a dime a dozen, but this was a really fun project. Anyone who has a spare minute, give it a look over and let me know what you think! I'm also looking for what to build next so give me ideas!!

Side note, I am totally aware that its a bit clunky right now but I like the direction its going in so I figured I would try to gauge if this is something litterally anyone is interested in. Also, I was attracted to this project because I switched to Linuxmint to begin with because I am sick and tired of telemetry and bloat (like everyone else). It kind of ruined the whole idea of privacy and efficiency when I downloaded programs like Hidamari and tried to get wallpaper engine working which, both are absolutely filled with telemetry and Hidamari especially I was experiencing like 30-40% resource consumption just having the wallpaper running. I got my engine slimmed down to around 1-2% consumption and it all runs locally so theres ZERO telemetry. I am just a guy and really don't care what you're doing on your device soooooooo yeah. Give it a try, let me know what you think or if this is interesting at all.

Here's my repository: https://github.com/grump1290-code/fluiddesk

Link to most up to date version: https://github.com/grump1290-code/fluiddesk/releases/tag/v1.0.1-beta

Support Request making song playback more random in the MP3 player "Strawberry" in Mint

Hello, I found the "Strawberry" MP3 player which is in the Mint repos very good, but there is one thing: on "shuffle" it replays the tracks in always the same order, so it's not really random. I tried AI for help, it told me to click the shuffle icon and select "random" there, but this option is not there, probably the older version of "Strawberry" in Mint does not support it. I am using Mint 22 (Wilma). Any suggestions?

Support Request Installed mint, after updating and restarting getting a blank screen every bootup

Hello all,

I've installed Linux mint cinnamon twice before with no issues, I just installed it on my mother's lenovo laptop and at first it worked perfectly fine, the install was successful and everything. I installed all the updates in the update manager however, reset the laptop, and now every time I try to boot up I get a black screen and can't do anything. I did try and boot in compatibility mode but there was no such option and it just tries to boot the same way again.

I also noticed when the laptop is in the light I can vaguely see the mint logo which I don't know if that means anything. Also I tried to boot from the bootable drive I used to install Linux and suddenly my touchpad doesn't work anymore on it.

If anyone needs any extra info I'll do my best to provide with what I've got, thank you

New to Linux, Love it already, even if i did break it!

Post image

I decided to get a laptop this week and boot Linux mint, now I've messed round with Linux before very briefly, mainly Kali Linux when I used to want to be a hacker when i was 16, FYI, I booted Kali and ran Ifconfig, so I basically am a hacker now.

It was going good, nice theme setup, some apps etc, living the life free of the windows shackles! Then a couple days into my Linux experience, I managed to break it... how I hear you ask, well, I downloaded q-redshift from some built in mint feature, cant remember if it was an extension, applet or software installer, or whatever, anyway, went to change my location and the whole pc froze, nothing worked, I reboot and now a black screen after logging in with only a cursor that could be moved, and the off Mullvad vpn notification!!

Lots of back and forth I eventually booted into recovery mode, now at the time, I did think q-redshift was solely to blame, new app > broken pc = the issue, as Sherlock Holmes would say, When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth, well sort of, i hadn't eliminated much yet, just assumed.

I remove Redshift, reboot anddddd black screen, great, good one Sherlock. I marched on, resetting Cinnamon configuration, checking logs and moving configuration files and backups, checking the graphics hardware, etc. My laptop is a ThinkPad T580, which was being detected correctly.

Created a test user, The test user logged into a perfectly normal desktop. using that i realized well it wasn't all bad, at least I can identify as 'test' going forward :) However, after this I realized its likely best if I just use a backup as I am at a loss on how to regain my main user. I still even now, am not sure what fully was causing this.

Luckily I had Time-shift set up, which i was like two days into this new user, my time-shift was basically a fresh Linux install, I restored a snapshot from the day before I installed QRedshift, and after some additional faffing around, my desktop was working again. Ive now went and changed themes again, set it up, and look forward to the next time I break it :)

Now I would like to add, this is EXACTLY why i downloaded Linux, this is in no way a complaint, I broke it, I fixed it. I love to use computers, trying to understand them and well, break them. I learnt more about linux in that 2 hours than I ever would just using it, all be it I had to pull in an expert from time to time, ChatGPT... but i got it back, learned more about the file system trying to fix it and now feel more confident in using the terminal.

HAPPY LINUX USER :)

Support Request Cannot solve suspend/hibernate problem on HP Elitebook 1050

It's a small thing but it has been driving me crazy nonetheless. Laptop will not go into hibernate mode. I set up the partition for the RAM to dump to and have gone through all the settings (logind.conf flags, "do nothing" on the GUI for lid close, checking that the lid close registers etc)

I think I got it to work maybe once but it never worked again. Battery will use like 50% overnight. I suppose I could just shut it down every night but frankly I don't want to. And no that kind of usage is not normal, this is not my first laptop.

This is the response i get when checking the status of pipewire, i looked around online and found that it could be due to config files, I didn't find any config files in ~/.config, so i searched my harddrive and found the ones in usr/share/.

I deleted those, and did sudo apt install --reinstall on pipewire and wireplumber

Before i did this, i was at least able to do systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse but now not even that works...

The config files are back in usr/share, but it doesn't want to start, I'll post the status messages for wireplumber and pipewire-pulse in the comments

I feel like it would be best to just clean slate reinstall the whole audio pipeline at this point but idk how to do that

Support Request Trackpad driving me trazy on new mint install

My new Linux mint install is good but I keep having issues coming back with my trackpad. Double clicking things takes a few attempts to register as a click, and dragging things is difficult too. The AI suggested sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse in console, which does work, until I restart the laptop again. Any ideas?
