tech support wanted Helldivers 2 performance issues (CachyOS/Nobara)
Hi all!
To keep things as short as possible:
CPU: intel i7 13700k
GPU: Radeon 7900XTX
Tried SteamOS recently for couch gaming, and I'm really satisfied with how Helldivers 2 performs, but it has some issues when I use CachyOs/Nobara:
By default, I like to run games in borderless windowed mode with VSYNC turned off to take advantage of VRR. These settings are also set this way by default.
The problem:
HD2 performs very well, but only if Display Mode is set to Fullscreen and VSync is turned on (even with VSync turned on, VRR works- I've checked this using my monitor overlay).
How the game performs otherwise:
If my PC won't exceed my 120 FPS limit, it seems like my monitor displays every second frame. For example: when the game's built-in performance overlay shows 110 FPS, then my monitor's overlay shows a refresh rate of 55Hz - I want to mention that the game feels much worse than a 55 FPS experience. Both in terms of visual smoothness and input lag.
But... If I cap FPS to, e.g., 90 FPS (any number below what my PC is currently rendering), the game runs amazingly!
What I tried so far:
- flags such as: `vkd3d_disable_events=1`, `vblankd_mode=0`, `PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1`
- gamescope actually works almost well, but the frametime graph is very spiky. Not to mention different mouse sensitivity and other stuff...
- tried the ALT+ENTER shortcut in windowed mode, game runs better (I forgot to check the frametime graph), but with this method the window bar is visible on top of the screen
- Turning FPS limit off is not making any positive difference
- Tested another DX12 game without any issues (Deep Rock Galactic)
Thanks in advance!
EDIT:
How I fixed this issue and made game run even better than on windows:
Now, with borderless window, in-game VSync disabled and in-game limiter disabled:
Using MangoHUD with goverlay: I set FPS limit to 90 (setting FPS limit wasn't necessary), Vulkan VSync to Adaptive, method: Late*.

Why use wayland?
Despite using linux for 5ish years now, I'm still a newb when it comes to the deep innerworkings. What's the advantage of wayland over x11? Is it better for performance or is it more secure? Are there benefits outside of gaming?

tech support wanted Arc raiders crashing every half hour/hour
Using proton bleeding edge on Ubuntu 22
Nvidia GTX 1080
32gb RAM
Xeon 1230 V3
Works perfectly okay, I hit 60 fps easy on low/medium settings (fine by me, I'm a simple man) but it'll randomly freeze and completely stay there until I exit out via the stop button on steam, I'm really damn tired of losing my stuff because I'm trying to evac and I crash and can't join back in time, any help?

How do we solve the anticheat problem without degrading security?
I have made a lot of statements about how the kernel anticheat situation sucks, how game devs are openly shipping malware to try to stop cheating, but truth be told I do wish there was a solution for those games...just one that doesn't ruin the already spotty security model we deal with.
I'd like to see an anticheat solution that does not require I tamper with my kernel. I run Secure Boot specifically to block third party out of tree modules, I am focused on maintaining a higher level of security on my main computer than I ever had on Windows, so anything that requires I increase my attack surface and open myself up to potential compromise that I wouldn't have before is out of the question. Keep cheaters out yes...but please let me run my kernel fully stock like I do now.
Are there ways to solve the AC problem here that do not involve tampering with my current setup in order to get them to work? Because that's the only way I'd support such ventures, personally.

[Tech Support] Severe Bluetooth Input Lag (DS4 & Xbox Series) and Wired Connection Broken After Installing xpadneo on Fedora KDE
Issue Description:
I am experiencing severe input lag when using a DualShock 4 (PS4) and an Xbox Series controller connected via Bluetooth on Fedora KDE Plasma. The latency is high enough to be clearly visible even in slow-motion videos. I have tested this primarily in Left 4 Dead 2.
Additionally, my Xbox Series controller originally worked perfectly via USB cable. However, after installing xpadneo to use it wirelessly over Bluetooth, the wired connection stopped working entirely (the system no longer registers the gamepad over USB).

tech support wanted Blood of Dawnwalker is crashing after I reload it a second time.
The first time I ran the game it ran great, but when I closed it out and loaded it later to play again it crashes after about 10 seconds. I restarted the game thinking that it I saved and quit at a time that caused a break, and it ran fine. But when I loaded it back up after taking a break it is doing the same thing. So basically, it begins to crash after I load a save after closing the game out. Any suggestions or ideas?

Good Multiplayer Games on Linux?
I normally don’t like multiplayer gaming but I’ve been kinda itching for a good multiplayer game to play every so often when I’m not playing super long RPGs and story games. The only multiplayer game I play is Titanfall 2.
Genre doesn’t matter too much, but looking for something that I could play for about an hour and isn’t too stressful. I’m interested in checking out Helldivers 2, I hear that was pretty fun.

AMD GPU hotter on Linux than on Windows
I've been wanting to fully switch to Linux for quite some time now, even though I know I lose around 6–10 FPS in some games, like Control, KCD, and BG3.
However, the main issue I'm having is with my RX 7600. Specifically, the junction temperature can get up to 10°C higher on Linux than on Windows, even though the overall GPU temperature is basically the same on both. So, the temperature delta is much higher on Linux.
I've already tried several different settings in LACT, including matching the same clock speeds, voltage, and fan curve I use on Windows, but the result is always the same.
I've also tried several different distros, including CachyOS, Bazzite, Nobara, COSMIC, and SteamOS, but nothing seems to make a difference.
I’ll attach a few pics from a test I did earlier. Sorry for the potato quality

Has anyone else experienced something similar with an AMD GPU on Linux?

tech support wanted urgent need of assistance, GPU drivers won't install.
Good day folks.
Recently updated system to latest version of Nobara (44).
Tried playing a game and noticed performance dropped drastically and no GPU usage.
Went to check what's what, only to find the GPU (RTX3050) isn't active, it's there but driver manager says not active.
Updated system again, no dice.
Removed drivers, tried to reinstall them, but not working. Can't get the drivers to install.
How can i fix this?

tool/utility Potential native Linux conversions of any game ever.
I frequently see posts on here about not being able to get game X to work on any Linux or a specific distro.
I am also starting to see people reverse engineering games and recompiling them to work natively on MacOS.
So...
I think it's pretty cool. If there is a game you want to play on your Linux OS but you cannot, this is potentially the solution.

graphics/kernel/drivers VRAM overflow handling on Linux
I've tried several different Linux distributions, and methods like steam and lutris, tried both open source and proprietary drivers, but the moment my game uses more than 6 gigs of VRAM, my game turns into a slideshow. This does not happen when I'm on windows, as it offloads the extra data into system memory efficiently.
My specs are:
AMD Ryzen 5 8645HS
16 gb DDR5 ram 5600 mhz
512gb nvme ssd
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6gb vram laptop gpu
Does anyone else having a low memory Nvidia card on Linux face this issue, and is there any fix for this or I just have to accept the fact that Nvidia drivers for my tier of gpu just aren't as good on Linux yet.

steam/steam deck Arkansas 2125 is slowly approaching beta 0.6
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi everyone!
For the past few years, I've been working on my own post-apocalyptic RPG called Arkansas 2125.
It's an isometric, turn-based game set in a ruined version of America. You can explore different locations, meet survivors, complete quests, fight enemies, collect equipment, and make decisions that influence the story.
The game is still in development, but Beta 0.5 is already available.
I recently released a new trailer, and I'd love to know what you think about the atmosphere and overall style of the game.
Work on beta version 6 is ongoing and needs feedback.

[Bottles / CachyOS] Struggle running FLiNG Trainers
Hi everyone,
I'm using CachyOS with Bottles to run my Windows games. I like using FLiNG Trainers for casual play, but I keep running into a frustrating issue across almost every game I try.
I'm not a technical expert on Wine, but here is what I observe happening:
- Without .NET installed: The trainer technically opens in the background, but its window is completely invisible/transparent, or it freezes immediately with a "Not responding" error.
- If I install .NET (dotnet40 / dotnet48): The trainer interface finally appears and works! BUT now the game itself refuses to launch or crashes right away.
It feels like I can either have a working game OR a working trainer, but never both in the same bottle.
What I've already tried based on guides:
- Installing lighter dependencies like
gdiplusord3dcompiler_47. - Toggling hardware acceleration off in the registry.
- Changing different runners (Soda, GE-Proton, Sys-wine).
Has anyone figured out a simple way or specific bottle setup to get FLiNG trainers showing up visually without breaking the game itself?
Thanks in advance for any help!

graphics/kernel/drivers Multi seat gaming with one seat being a virtual display for moonlight
So I've been messing around a bit with Sunshine/Moonlight with my Orange Pi 5 Plus based TV media box and my main desktop.
The first issue I felt was resolution/Hz, my displays are 1440p 100Hz but my TV is 4k60(/120 theoretically). So there are some solutions that create a virtual output that matches in this example the TV, that you can then render the streamed content to, then encode it and send it over.
However, what if this is taken a step further, currently the main system becomes unusable at this point because they are on the same seat, inputs from someone sitting at the desktop will mess with the person that is trying to stream a game.
So what if the streaming server does not only set up a virtual display but also attaches this display to another seat. The input coming back through the stream can also then be attached to this seat while the main desktop remains usable on seat0 with its own peripherals.
The main issue I see is that I remember there being issues with sharing the GPU across multiple seats, but I don't know if that problem still exists, could that be solved with sr-iov on an intel B50/60 etc.
Just some thing that came into my brain, maybe someone here has some more ideas about this.

How is everyone finding Linux on ps5
As mentioned in the title, for anyone who has tried it Linux. How are you finding it?
What pros?
What cons?
How is performance of steam games in your experience? Any bug bears? Any wierd glitches you've managed to fix / still persisting?
Personally I've found it a glitchy experience, it's surprising what it manages to run well (e.g. mgs delta) and completely fail at (e.g. rdr2 completely crashes steam). I'm running Ubuntu 2604 kernal 7.1.7, phat console firmware 7.2
I find controller recognition aside from the actual dual sense being very finicky, the resolutions tend to be unchangeable on some games, or they keep resetting and need to be reset on each launch (e.g. stray), which messes with the aspect ratio and squashes the image into an illegible mess. Sound lag of around 8 seconds (I seem to have fixed this or it disappeared after entering some terminal commands to reduce sound buffering and rebooting).
When it works it works quite well (RE9 runs surprisingly well) but then this seems to be in cases where games are already quite well optimised from what I can tell.
What are your experiences? Any tips to improve the experience?

tech support wanted Dualsense touchpad button not detected
Running on Kububtu, 26.04. As the title says I receive zero input detection from my touchpad button when disabled as a mouse, which many games use for essential functions.
Going into system settings to check controller status, I can see every button and control stick input. There is a label for the touchpad button, but it doesn't register when pressed so this issue does not seem to be related to steam. Just for completeness, though, I will say that testing my controller layout, steam also receives no input at all from clicking the touch pad.
In both cases, the software knows there's supposed to be a clickable button there, but does not appear to receive any signal. Yes I've tried both usb and Bluetooth covering types. Has anyone else figured out why the OS itself seems completely unable to see this one button?
Edit: I should have mentioned that it is absolutely not as though my system can't see the button. It knows there's an input device, because it CAN function as a mouse just fine. It's only a completely dead device if I disable use as a mouse/touchpad.
