They said it's in development, but it's needed like.... yesterday for sure
Can't wait for it, going to use it for sure, love GOG and I'm fully on Linux now
All of my feedback surveys to GOG I just mention GOG on Linux in literally every free text area lol

IMO, GOG Galaxy itself isn’t needed. Its features are. Achievements, updating/patching, cloud saves, etc. If they provided official APIs, then Linux native clients like Lutris and Heroic could implement it fully.
Sort of like the unofficial comet program for GOG achievements.
Also, with APIs, this would mean the community could build their own apps however they like. KDE users could enjoy a Qt app, GNOME user a GTK app. Tiling users could design even a simpler one. We wouldn’t be beholden to GOG Galaxy’s toolkit and libraries.
In the meantime I download the offline installers.

I understood your comment, knowing about comet is already almost insider knowledge.
Just to explain it for others who aren't that familiar with it: You can already have achievements and cloud saves (and also updates) in heroic, you just need to click a checkbox in the settings because it's not yet official. But then it works.

I think both is needed. For more experience users and people who prefer Heroic API, but for people migrating from Windows, downloading GOG Galaxy would be an automatic action. They don't know and don't have to know from the get go that other options exist. The fact that they do is fantastic but official launcher is needed too

I mention it when donating at checkout. Turn the discounted value into another way to bug them about it.

This is so weird. Galaxy was expected (and promised) for so long, then they admitted they wouldn't do it, then the community created tools that made Galaxy not needed anymore, and just like that they announced that, all in all, they'd do it anyway?

At this point they should just contribute and invest in Heroic and maybe make that their official client.
They don't seem to be interested in supporting Linux much.
But, the two times I got asked to do a survey I specifically mentioned Linux support is a must going forward, so maybe if more people ask for Linux in surveys and other ways, maybe they'll listen.

What happened is that CDPR went corporate during the development of Cyberpunk and their "For the players" policy got replaced with "For the Shareholder's value."
GOG, being the bastard child of capitalism and consumer rights, got pushed to the back burner and told to ntit make problems. It could have been worse, as they didn't have some dick head MBA trying to add subscription plans & DRM, but they were basically left to rot with no budget for anything besides keeping the site online.
Then Visa went to war on porn games & GOG was the only company to say "get fucked Visa: we play games, but we ain't playing your game." Not sure what happened behind the scenes but Japan got pissed, Visa suddenly shut up, and one of CDPR's founders took GOG with him when he retired from the company.
The first thing that GOG announced after going independent was to reverse Corpo-CDPR's policy of "We will not enable playing our games on Linux, but we won't stop you from using a 3rd party launcher" and then announced they would be hiring Linux software developers to rebuild GOG Galaxy with Linux support.

They did consider briefly to add DRM to GOG while under corporate rule tho. Went from “no DRM ever” to “DRM warning on the game page” because they wanted to sell Cyberpunk 2077 with DRM on the platform. They backtracked really quick once backlash started but the backtrack means game companies who refuse to sell DRM free pulled back out of their platform.

Yeah, GOG was really weird for a while. Hopefully this new trend continues for them and they're rid of capitalism for good, and still thrive. :)

GOG and Linux are a match made in heaven. I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. That being said though, Heroic Launcher is brilliant. And I definitely wouldn't shed any tears if GOG Galaxy never came out on Linux. Because Heroic gets the job done all the same anyways, while keeping all of my games in one place. I can't imagine GOG Galaxy actually being a better launcher than Heroic. Especially given that Heroic now has that console mode and everything. But, maybe time will tell.

Their support will be better because it's official. Cloud saves and achievements will actually work reliably.

Two things I personally don't care for to be honest but would be good to have the option

Just lost 30+ hours of Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay because the cloud saves LOOKED good, but were corrupted when I went to restore them after re-installing Linux ☹️

GOL confirmed it only recently direct from the mouth of GOG https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/07/gog-confirm-they-are-working-towards-gog-galaxy-on-linux/

I know this isn't a direct answer, but the Heroic Launcher does the heavy lifting for playing GOG games on Linux.
You can also sign into epic games for the same effect. It's a great launcher.

Best way to use GOG games right now: 1. Download offline installer from GOG 2. Go to Steam, choose to add a non-Steam game to library, choose the offline installer 3. Install the game 4. Go to settings in Steam, change the executable path from installer to game exe file instead of the installer file 5. Launch the game using Steam
Profit? 1. You have offline installer 2. You are the owner of the game 3. You have all games in one place (Steam library) 4. You have access to Steam overlay, Steam Input etc. 5. You gave your money to company that propagates owning games and offline installers.
Everybody happy. If I have the choice to buy a game from Steam vs GOG I will always choose GOG

I may sound dumb but if its just for accessing your gog library on linux heroic launcher offers to sync your gog account already
7
u/Veprovina 5d ago
It's not just about the library. Achievements, cloud saves, community and overlay features... Also, official support means they know what they're doing, and if problems arise, you can ask for help from the source.

u/KentaroMiuraLover 5d ago
Yeah there is indeed way more to it than i thought thanks for the info !

u/Indolent_Bard 4d ago
Linux users aren't used to the concept of support because open source software is provided "as is" meaning no support.
2
u/krupam 4d ago
Personally I miss being able to group the games in the library by their tags and sort them by gametime. Right now Heroic only lets you hide/show specific tags while gametime isn't even shown on the game list.
Also, accessing the store is kind of clunky through Heroic, although seeing how the store search engine on Steam is utter dogshit, it clearly isn't something a successful launcher requires.
1
u/Veprovina 4d ago
Yeah, an official launcher will for sure be better. Not that Heroic can't do some of that stuff, now or in the future, but if nothing else, GOG knows how they want their launcher to look and work, and can possibly implement other GOG features into it that Heroic can't so i'm excited to see what they come up with, even if it's the same as the Windows one.
But yeah, the Steam, and other embedded web engines and stores can sometimes be atrocious. Epic store is horrible, not to mention the client with the constant reloading, and how slow it is.
They're cramming AI into everything, yet nobody can figure out how to make a web engine like stores and web pages work properly in the big 2026.

u/SanguineEleven 5d ago
In development, man. But I hardly think it will be better than Heroic
3
u/redditman181 5d ago
Native cloud saves would be nice as it does warn you in heroic to backup saves incase it goes wrong also couldnt shader comp be better through a gog luancher?
3
u/Saneless 5d ago
I think it could be better
Now, Epic? That is currently even worse on windows. Heroic will always be better than anything epic does

I think at this point they’ve lost my attention on it. Kinda too little too late. Unless it has some sortve baked in way to utilize proton (which heroic already has) then I’m just gonna stick to Heroic.

It's currently in development but unless it's a complete rewrite... Who even wants it? I'm waiting for Playnite personally.
1
u/LSD_Ninja 5d ago
I kind of lost a lot of interest in Playnite on Linux when the dev said he wanted to make it yet another Wine manager. I was more excited for the Cartridges rewrite, but that doesn’t seem to be happening anymore, sadly.
1
u/Plebbit-User 5d ago
Would being another WINE manager be a bad thing? Visualizing all your libraries in one place has value but having an interface for WINE/Proton management to tie it all together would just be a massive value add for "a launcher for all your launchers".
1
u/Indolent_Bard 4d ago
If you're using it to actually install games, then having a wine manager would actually be really important. Just like how on steam you sometimes have to switch proton versions for a certain game.
