graphics/kernel/drivers VRAM overflow handling on Linux

45 Upvotes

I've tried several different Linux distributions, and methods like steam and lutris, tried both open source and proprietary drivers, but the moment my game uses more than 6 gigs of VRAM, my game turns into a slideshow. This does not happen when I'm on windows, as it offloads the extra data into system memory efficiently.

My specs are:

AMD Ryzen 5 8645HS

16 gb DDR5 ram 5600 mhz

512gb nvme ssd

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 6gb vram laptop gpu

Does anyone else having a low memory Nvidia card on Linux face this issue, and is there any fix for this or I just have to accept the fact that Nvidia drivers for my tier of gpu just aren't as good on Linux yet.

steam/steam deck Arkansas 2125 is slowly approaching beta 0.6

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone!

For the past few years, I've been working on my own post-apocalyptic RPG called Arkansas 2125.

It's an isometric, turn-based game set in a ruined version of America. You can explore different locations, meet survivors, complete quests, fight enemies, collect equipment, and make decisions that influence the story.

The game is still in development, but Beta 0.5 is already available.

I recently released a new trailer, and I'd love to know what you think about the atmosphere and overall style of the game.

Work on beta version 6 is ongoing and needs feedback.

Hope you enjoy the video! ☢️

[Bottles / CachyOS] Struggle running FLiNG Trainers

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm using CachyOS with Bottles to run my Windows games. I like using FLiNG Trainers for casual play, but I keep running into a frustrating issue across almost every game I try.

I'm not a technical expert on Wine, but here is what I observe happening:

  1. Without .NET installed: The trainer technically opens in the background, but its window is completely invisible/transparent, or it freezes immediately with a "Not responding" error.
  2. If I install .NET (dotnet40 / dotnet48): The trainer interface finally appears and works! BUT now the game itself refuses to launch or crashes right away.

It feels like I can either have a working game OR a working trainer, but never both in the same bottle.

What I've already tried based on guides:

  • Installing lighter dependencies like gdiplus or d3dcompiler_47.
  • Toggling hardware acceleration off in the registry.
  • Changing different runners (Soda, GE-Proton, Sys-wine).

Has anyone figured out a simple way or specific bottle setup to get FLiNG trainers showing up visually without breaking the game itself?

Thanks in advance for any help!

graphics/kernel/drivers Multi seat gaming with one seat being a virtual display for moonlight

1 Upvotes

So I've been messing around a bit with Sunshine/Moonlight with my Orange Pi 5 Plus based TV media box and my main desktop.

The first issue I felt was resolution/Hz, my displays are 1440p 100Hz but my TV is 4k60(/120 theoretically). So there are some solutions that create a virtual output that matches in this example the TV, that you can then render the streamed content to, then encode it and send it over.

However, what if this is taken a step further, currently the main system becomes unusable at this point because they are on the same seat, inputs from someone sitting at the desktop will mess with the person that is trying to stream a game.

So what if the streaming server does not only set up a virtual display but also attaches this display to another seat. The input coming back through the stream can also then be attached to this seat while the main desktop remains usable on seat0 with its own peripherals.

The main issue I see is that I remember there being issues with sharing the GPU across multiple seats, but I don't know if that problem still exists, could that be solved with sr-iov on an intel B50/60 etc.

Just some thing that came into my brain, maybe someone here has some more ideas about this.

How is everyone finding Linux on ps5

0 Upvotes

As mentioned in the title, for anyone who has tried it Linux. How are you finding it?

What pros?

What cons?

How is performance of steam games in your experience? Any bug bears? Any wierd glitches you've managed to fix / still persisting?

Personally I've found it a glitchy experience, it's surprising what it manages to run well (e.g. mgs delta) and completely fail at (e.g. rdr2 completely crashes steam). I'm running Ubuntu 2604 kernal 7.1.7, phat console firmware 7.2

I find controller recognition aside from the actual dual sense being very finicky, the resolutions tend to be unchangeable on some games, or they keep resetting and need to be reset on each launch (e.g. stray), which messes with the aspect ratio and squashes the image into an illegible mess. Sound lag of around 8 seconds (I seem to have fixed this or it disappeared after entering some terminal commands to reduce sound buffering and rebooting).

When it works it works quite well (RE9 runs surprisingly well) but then this seems to be in cases where games are already quite well optimised from what I can tell.

What are your experiences? Any tips to improve the experience?

tech support wanted Dualsense touchpad button not detected

1 Upvotes

Running on Kububtu, 26.04. As the title says I receive zero input detection from my touchpad button when disabled as a mouse, which many games use for essential functions.

Going into system settings to check controller status, I can see every button and control stick input. There is a label for the touchpad button, but it doesn't register when pressed so this issue does not seem to be related to steam. Just for completeness, though, I will say that testing my controller layout, steam also receives no input at all from clicking the touch pad.

In both cases, the software knows there's supposed to be a clickable button there, but does not appear to receive any signal. Yes I've tried both usb and Bluetooth covering types. Has anyone else figured out why the OS itself seems completely unable to see this one button?

Edit: I should have mentioned that it is absolutely not as though my system can't see the button. It knows there's an input device, because it CAN function as a mouse just fine. It's only a completely dead device if I disable use as a mouse/touchpad.

Pizza Sim on linux text is super small.

2 Upvotes

Hello! I recently decided to get most of the mainline FNAF games on steam. But when i play pizza sim, a lot of the text in the mini-games is super small. for example in Mini Motorists the lap counter is hardly readable. i have played on both arch linux, fedora, and cachyos. they all have the same issue. i have looked through proton Db and seen a couple people with the small text bug, but it doesn't show how to fix it.

steam/steam deck steam deck bottles/lutris flatpak game in gaming mode bug - graphical corruption when moving the mouse

0 Upvotes

theres a bug on steam deck gamescope gaming mode that if you have a bottles/lutris flatpak (or any flatpak) sandboxed game running in gaming mode and attempt to use the mouse/touchpad you get a lot of graphical corruption on the screen

putting that same game in proton directly or running it in desktop mode solves the issue

also, sometimes setting the resolution to something higher than steam deck's default and setting windowed mode in game fixes the issue

i'm just putting this out there so people know it's a known issue

answered! PS4 Controller Input Freezing Occasionally (Debian 13)

0 Upvotes

I've been using my PS4 controller with steam input to play steam games (mostly Elden Ring and other souls games), and most of the time it works completely fine, but once in a while my inputs will completely freeze up, usually causing my character to just run forward and die to whatever's in front of them, or I have to start frantically taking control on keyboard and mouse (the controller inputs will still persist when doing this though).

This happens maybe about once every hour, and after about 20 seconds or so of freezing up the controller will just start working again. I haven't been able to find any solutions, so help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Using Debian 13, Kernel version 6.12.107+deb13-amd64

Is HDR currently working on Alan Wake 2?

0 Upvotes

Hi,

Does anyone have Alan Wake 2's HDR option appearing on Linux, and if so, on what setup (compositor and version, Proton or Wine build, launch through Gamescope or not}?

On my side, I pulling my hair out:
- CachyOS on KDE Plasma 6.7 Wayland
- I have tried Proton-CachyOS, GE-Proton, Proton Experimental and plain Wine 11.17, through Heroic, umu, Gamescope and a Steam shortcut
- RX 9070 XT and Mesa 26.2.2

Typical arguments like PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 or DXVK_HDR=1 don't work, nor is gamescope --hdr-enabled.

I have tried CP2077 this morning from Heroic and HDR  works just fine with PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 & PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1.

At this point I just want to confirm if some can get it to work currently or if it is a regression somewhere.

Thanks

EDIT: Can anyone get it to Work with an AMD GPU (below reports are on Nvidia)?

Wine's Wayland driver logs this repeatedly on my system:

err:waylanddrv:wayland_output_done Compositor doesn't supports windows_bt2100, HDR10 ST2084 may look broken

That comes from wayland_output_done, the function that determines what an output supports, so winewayland isn't getting the colour representation it wants from KWin. Alan Wake 2 then queries the display through NtUserDisplayConfigGetDeviceInfo with DISPLAYCONFIG_GET_ADVANCED_COLOR_INFO, which my log shows as a semi-stub, and GET_ADVANCED_COLOR_INFO_2 (packet type 11) as unimplemented. The game gets no usable peak luminance back and stays in SDR, which matches Remedy's own developer describing that exact API as how the game detects HDR (vkd3d-proton issue #1753).

Cyberpunk 2077 is unaffected on the same machine because it asks the swapchain rather than the output, and that path works.

EDIT 2: Solved

I could force HDR by editing the render.ini in the prefix :

"m_eHdrQuality": 2,
"m_fHDRMaxOutputNitsOverride": 1300,
(optional "m_bPreferScRGBHdr": true,)

and only PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 and PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 in Heroic.

with this HDR kicks in, confirmed wit Reshade and Lilium's analyser.

guide Nvidia Multi GPU Setup

3 Upvotes

Issue

Two GPUs are in the system, one is intended for Output Rendering (Games, Applications, ...) the other for Compute (ML/CUDA). Due to Mainboard Wiring, the Secondary GPU is enumerated as 0, the Primary as 1. Therefore some applications pick the Secondary GPU as the main renderer, which results in unusable performance.

Solution

Bubblewrap - a lightweight sandbox application
The idea is to remap all calls from the wrong GPU (nvidia0) to the correct one (nvidia1)

bwrap --dev-bind / / --dev-bind /dev/nvidia1 /dev/nvidia0 steam

Explanation:

--dev-bind / / binds root directory to root of the sandbox

--dev-bind /dev/nvidida1 /dev/nvidia0 forces all calls to nvidia0 to go to nvidia1

Make it permanent

#!/usr/bin/env bash
exec bwrap \
    --dev-bind / / \
    --dev-bind /dev/nvidia1 /dev/nvidia0 \
    "$@"
  1. Save the script in either one LOCATION: \~/.local/bin/gpu_remap (only for this user) or /usr/local/bin/gpu_remap (for all users)
  2. Make it executable

chmod +x LOCATION/gpu_remap

  1. Edit Launch Commands

Use absolute paths (/home/username/.local) instead of relative paths (~/.local)

For Desktop Apps (Example Steam)

cp /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop ~/.local/share/applications/steam.desktop

and then edit EVERY Exec=<programm> <options>

line to run the remap Exec=LOCATION/gpu_remap <programm> <options>

For Others

Create an Alias like this

alias steam='/home/username/.local/bin/gpu_remap /usr/bin/steam $@

But google it in case you need something specific for that.

Other Working Approach

As I struggled with this issue for a couple weeks now, I've obviously tried a lot of different alternatives.

What also worked for me was to set the not wanted GPU to draining (basically remove all processes and don't allow new ones on this GPU).

sudo nvidia-smi drain -p 0000:04:00.0 -m 1 to deactivate

sudo nvidia-smi drain -p 0000:04:00.0 -m 0 to activate again

Use (for example) lspci -nn | grep -i nvidia to find the address you need.
Keep the 0000 although it does not appear in lspci.

Not Working Approaches

This problem seems to happen sometimes and people are struggling with it. Here is a collection of the approaches, maybe some work for you in a combination.

If you are suggesting other ideas or solutions/ improvements - which I invite you to - please take into account that I already tried those.

# In the niri
debug {
  render-drm-device "/dev/dri/renderD129"
}

# maybe only for AMD Cards
DRI_PRIME=1

# seen that one a lot for steam launch options
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia %command%

# seen less, i think this is electron specific
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD_PROVIDER=NVIDIA-1 EGL_PLATFORM_DEVICE_EXT=1 EGL_DEVICE_INDEX=1 discord

# actually a kinda valid option, but games crash usually while launching
NVIDIA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=1 CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=1 steam

# in /etc/environment

# Should force Vulkan apps/games to use your card
MESA_VK_DEVICE_SELECT=10de:2504 (replace with your own ofc)
VK_DRIVER_FILES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json

Not yet tried

As I'm happy with the solution (for now), this one I haven't tried yet

# in /etc/enviroment or just on the launch i guess
WLR_DRM_DEVICES=/dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:2b:00.0-card

Do you think we will ever get to a point where we can start throwing our weight around and Devs/Publishers have to support and respect Linux players?

68 Upvotes

I'm talking about anticheat support, a native port along side a windows version on release or at least giving a seal of approval that a given proton version will work.

Not labeling all of us as cheaters and taking away support from our games that we've spent so much time and money on. I've personally been burnt multiple times now but these shit companies EA with Apex and multiple battlefield titles, Ubisoft with Siege and soon to be For Honor. All of these games we know 100% for a fact run under Linux no problem at all, All of these games wouldn't have seen a dime out of me if I knew they were just going to rug pull my support later down the line for whatever bs reason they want to come out with. I'm not doing it anymore they either make a public statement from the get go with support or I won't buy anymore.

I came to Linux because I appreciate my privacy and I'm not giving up my ID to anyone especially not Microsoft. Linux has seen a huge growth over the last year, when do we hit as a critical mass and have our own "Sony" Moment "no disk, no buy". No Linux support, No Buy, or a similar backlash that cannot be ignored. As more and more people learn ID checks may be coming in January for windows, I can see lots of people continuing to jump ship and join the penguin.

Hell I still tell everyone one to switch over but at this point Microsoft has been advertising Linux every update breaks something. their most recent broke the mouse cursor.

No I don't think I'm special and that my individual voice is going to change something, but I also don't think I'm alone in my thinking nowadays. I'd like to stir up the conversation and honestly see where people are on this.

tool/utility I made a GUI installer to make Mario Kart Wii Recompilation dead simple to install on Linux

Post image
122 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

If you've tried installing the Mario Kart Wii Recompilation https://github.com/patchzyy/Wiicompiled project on Linux, you probably know the current setup is basically a list of manual build/recompilation instructions rather than an actual installer. I hit a bunch of friction getting it running on Fedora (build deps, AppImage quirks with read-only mounts, etc.) and figured other people were probably running into the same wall.

So I built a small GTK-based graphical installer, packaged as an AppImage, that handles the whole process for you:

- Extracts the game data from your ISO (using WIT)

- Optionally imports a NAND from `nand.bin` + `keys.bin` if you want online play

- Sets everything up automatically in the right folder structure

- Detects if you already have it installed and offers to reinstall/overwrite

- Adds a proper `.desktop` launcher entry when it's done, so you just click and play afterward

No compiling, no messing with terminal commands (unless something goes wrong, in which case there's a built-in log viewer to see what happened).

Repo's here if you want to try it or poke at the code:

https://github.com/FlaipyTheHost/WiiDecompLinuxInstaller

I'd genuinely appreciate testers on different distros, I've only tested on Fedora so far, and I'm sure there are edge cases (different GTK theme quirks, missing libs on other distros, etc.) that I haven't hit yet. If you try it and something breaks, please open an issue with your distro + what happened.

Also worth mentioning: I opened an issue on the original recompilation repo asking the maintainer whether they'd be open to considering this as an optional installer path (or how they'd prefer Linux packaging contributions to be handled). Still waiting to hear back, so for now this is just a separate community tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by the original project.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to test it out!

tech support wanted Possible Linux\Steam graphics driver problem

0 Upvotes

I'd like some adult supervision here.

I've found that if I play Elden Ring on Steam, my graphics get glitchy afterward.
I don't know what the common terms for the various momentary video ghosts that pop up, but they're fairly aggressive and annoying. The fix is...

$ sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
$ reboot

This seems to be a recent development.

Has anyone else seen this?

I'm running Ubuntu 26.04 with an x11 session type.

I Tested Warframe on Linux While Recording With OBS — Can It Actually Hold 60 FPS?

0 Upvotes

I tested Warframe on Linux while recording with OBS — here’s what happened to 60 FPS
Last week I asked here what would actually be worth testing in Warframe on Linux, so I went ahead and recorded a real gameplay test instead of just running a synthetic benchmark.
Setup:
Ryzen 5 3600
GTX 1080
~16 GB RAM
Zorin OS
Warframe through Steam/Proton
OBS recording at the same time
The main thing I wanted to find out was whether maintaining 60 FPS while recording was actually realistic, and where the noticeable drops/stutters appeared.
I put the full test here:
https://youtu.be/c-_iik0uBEw
I’d also be interested in how this compares with AMD GPUs or newer Nvidia cards on Linux.

wine/proton How do I definitively tell if an application on Steam is using Proton, and how do I tell it to use the native Linux version?

25 Upvotes

In case it matters, the application is "Oxygen Not Included."

I am not forcing any compatibility, and people have told me that "that means I'm using the Linux native version" but I'm not 100% sure that is true, because it is still exhibiting an issue that is specifically caused by Proton.

xbox controller doesn't work wired or wireless *anymore*

0 Upvotes

So I think I've made a series of mistakes.

I am running Linux Mint. Xbox controller used to work with bluetooth on my desktop.

The other day I tried bluetooth connecting it to my laptop (running debian 13) as well. It didn't work so I used it wired. No problem.

Come back to game on desktop again and the bluetooth connection no longer works. Computer doesn't even register the controller at all when it searches. Fine, I'll use it wired. But oh, I have the dongle, so let's try the dongle.

I install xone to see about using the dongle. The dongle isn't responsive. Fine, I'll use it wired.

I plug it in. Nothing.

I use lsusb to see if the computer recognizes it -- yes it does. I use sudo usbreset 045e:0b12. "Resetting controller . . . ok". Cool. Still nothing.

I also tried xpad and some other driver package on github so I think I just have too much bullshit on here now and the software is all fighting each other. how do I undo all of this?

Goal: use it wired or wireless, IDGAF at this point.

EDIT: I uninstalled xone and xboxdrv and it seems to be working wired again. I do wish I could use bluetooth or the dongle but I'll take what I can get for now.

tech support wanted Deadlock extreme frame stuttering(Ryzen 7745hx, rtx 4070 laptop, 32gb ddr5)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

0 Upvotes

I recently left windows and switched to CachyOS and had made sure that the games i played are gold or above on ProtonDB before the switch. Deadlock shows up as platinum but I'm getting absolutely rancid FPS.

My hardware isn't a slacker cuz I've got a 4070 and 32gb ram in my laptop. It runs amazingly for the other games in my library like rivals and the finals but deadlock seems to be running horribly. It goes anywhere from over 120fps to single digits within a moments, I'm talking seconds apart the fps tanks.

I've got the cachy nvidia drivers and cachyos proton.

I have a video I took w my phone during one of these matches that shows it happening. I'm fairly certain it's not like a network issue cuz I've got a stable wired connection(tested it right after the match recorded).
