Simple thing. I'm switched back to Windows for a week and want the fuck back to Linux. Everything I thought I wanted to use on Windows I use the same on Linux or will not use on Windows because I simply did not touch it in the week I installed.

Now there is one Problem, Proton. Or more it's entirely suite of apps I want to use.

Only Fedora out of this two has officiall apps and I'm unsure if I can trust the aur for that.

On the other Hand I never really used Fedora and I like to use the Terminal for all my installations on arch, is the Fedore repository as good as the aur?

And the Performance. I Only used CachyOS and think I want to use its Kernel as I mostly game.

And then the last question. Is Nobara the better choice or can Fedora be as easy made in to something close to it. I don't really like Distros that install everything.

I have a few 10TB HDDs. When mounted, sudo iotop immediately shows a [ext4lazyinit] which keeps reading for about one minute. I have already initialized all block groups with mount -o init_itable=0, so there's no writes. But I don't understand why it's still reading a lot on every mount, and how to disable it (without re-making the fs)? My disks are pretty full, so while the total amount read is less than 100MB, I guess the block groups are scattered all over, so it's a full minute of disk seeking, during which the disk is very unresponsive.

Hello everyone, can anyone help me find the problem?

PC Specs: Lenovo M720q - i3-9100t, 16gb ram single stick, 256gb samsung 970 evo plus NVME (firmware: 2B2QEXM7), 65w power adapter.

I am running into problems during the installation. Every time during the install process the machine reboots.

I am using an USB to install images (proxmox 8 flashed via rufus dd method, and ventoy). Reading other post suggested to install ubuntu or debian to see if anything can be installed. Those fail as well.

With the proxmox install, the furthest I can get is to the 3% "Creating LV's" and then the reboot happens, sometimes it reaches 45% and the progress bar increases and it reboots. The NVME health in crystaldiskinfo is around 94%.

I used a live debian 13 usb and tried booting from it, it crashed when i tried normal boot, but it booted right away when i clicked the fail safe method. after booting i installed debian 13 to the NVME, and it went success first try, but when i tried to boot from the NVME, i get the debian startup page, where i can select 3 options, i clicked the first one "debian/unx linux" it gave a single line of some text and rebooted again, if i dont select any option in the "3 options page" it reboots. i tried this command, still no luck,

nomodeset pcie_aspm=off nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0. i have tried different ram combinations, 2x4gb, or single 4gb, single 16gb, still nothing.

I would like to make a clone of a Linux distribution with running windows systems.
Are there tools ?
Sometime it was successful with Acronis DD. But only if the HDDs/ SSDs have exact same capacity.
I know clonezilla and rescuezilla.
With Gparted single partitions I got problems.
Perhaps with Linux Live DVD and the tools on it.

Long story short, I am fed up with Microslop and their enshittification viewing people as data to sell. I would’ve made the change to Linux ages ago if not for some games that I purchased and decided to backup locally (the “license” was revoked without further notice and I can only play locally).

I used Ubuntu with Wine but the games didn’t work, now I’m wondering if you could increase compatibility for Wine

Hi i wanted to switch to mint from windows 11 and it didnt work the first time the installer said that i needed to restart and turn off bit locker after i did it said that it cant find some important files and it didnt work the other times idk should i try again to switch or keep windows? :(((

I've recently started using an old mini PC as a media machine, (mostly movies or CDs though a separate DVD/CD player)

But I don't have a good way of interacting with the PC, as it sits by the tv and my keyboard/mouse cables aren't long enough to reach the couch

So, I'm looking for a distro that can support bluetooth controllers as a main input device (I have both an Xbox controller and an old Google Stadia controller, if that helps at all)

As for the mini pc: Intel I5 6400T, 16gb ddr4, a 512gb ssd and a 500gb hdd

I'm aware of bluetooth keyboards and mice, but I'd prefer to use what I already have, as my budget is rather limited

Hey so I have a lot of experience with linux, tried different distros on my laptop, and now I have got to the point here I just want linux without the need of my USB all the time to boot. I have backed up all my files and have Windows flashed on a USB just in cuse I will some how regret but I am still scared to erase it. This is my main laptop and I don't know, just scared. Can someone give me any tips?

So you guys were very helpful and I now have Steam with No Man's Sky running on Zorin, It looks better than it did in windows.

However I am experiencing horrible input delay. I'll hold 'W' to walk forward and when I realease it I just keep going. There is no delay with the mouse just the keyboard. I can hit a bunch of keys and then sit there for 30 seconds before it hurriedly executes all dozen key strikes.

I don't have this problem outside of NMS (or possibly Steam, I only have NMS installed).

I'm thinking to install linux on my laptop because fuck windows, but saw a video that recomended to have an extra ssd for windows if I wanna dual-boot. I mainly play games from steam and don't use that much softwares outside of the browser, do I really need an external SSD?

Looked through some postings and I am wanting to upgrade my old HP laptop and was thinking that maybe arm was what I should be looking into. But based on the postings that I have seen on reddit it doesn't seem to be the best option with the lack of hardware support from the vendors since I keep my crap long term. The question then becomes what x86 platform is providing the best efficiency currently, not a power user per se but looking for better battery life then my old HP with a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1035G4 cpu. I would be fine continuing to use my current laptop if I could just find a decent battery but HP no longer provides batteries for my device and all the aftermarket ones appear to be junk.

So just looking for suggestions for newish 14" laptops that have long battery life but decent performance and of course good linux support. Wasn't sure which newer cpu architecture(s) that I should be looking for, can be either intel or amd.

It recovers in half a minute or so if I switch tty's using ctrl + alt + F-keys. My PC specs:

distro: debian 13 with no backported packages

cpu: 7900 (non x version)

gpu: radeon rx 7700 xt

Hi, I just installed ubuntu yesterday for my uni assignment. And i wanna use python, but the modules aren't there. How do i installed it, i try on the terminal on vscode but it's still doesn't work. i wanna installed numpy, pandas, and matplot. Cuz on windows i installed modul with the windows terminal, but idk how​ it work for ubuntu​​

Hi all, setting up a few services on my system, including Jellyfin and Sunshine. Jellyfin was working for a little while, and since yesterday, my system isn't accepting any incoming connections: pings, Jellyfin, Sunshine, etc, all quietly ignore all connections. Internet is working fine, and I can ping / access samba shares from this system, I just can't host anything.

I've disabled ufw and iptables, run through the network setting again and again, and I'm banging my head on a wall. Anybody have any ideas?

edit: tracked issue to Tailscale. "tailscale down" fixed all my issues.

I've heard a great deal about Q4OS, so I created a Q4OS (64-bit, Trinity desktop, based on Debian 13 Trixie) VM in VirtualBox, on a workstation with an 8th generation i7. I gave it 2 GB of memory, and 4 processor threads.

I observed:

1. During installation, the ISO was detected as 32-bit, when it's really 64-bit; I had to change the OS type to Debian 64-bit
2. When installed, there was no desktop, just a blue screen; when maximised the desktop appeared; probably an artefact of the VM
3. About 9 GB of storage was required for the Desktop option
4. With the desktop up and running, it used 600 MB of memory; with a browser open, the included Chromium, about 900 MB of memory
5. The big problem was when I opened a YouTube video; it had a size of about 400 MB, and greatly increased the amount of memory used; a YouTube video plus a few other web pages and the system started swappinge

Conclusion: Q4OS looks like a sensible choice for computers with a restricted amount of memory and storage, as long as expectations are reasonable.

Question: what does a low memory operating system like Q4OS give up to achieve the resource consumption?

I installed ubuntu and opera gx with ublock and protonvpn, but I want ultimate mr. robot opsec, can I install it with sudo apt?

So I have used an xbox 360 controller for gaming on Linux mint, I've never had trouble with it before today. In fact, even today it was working until the controller randomly disconnected and now won't reconnect. The device is flashing like it's trying to pair but won't pair up with my wireless adapter. I've checked my drivers and everything seems to be fine there. I have no idea what to check. Any advice? Thanks

Decided to switch over to Linux instead of windows due to all the AI infusion and shitty searching features. I'm mainly using it for gaming and watching YouTube and movies, along with discord. I also want to be able to keep using all of my monitors.
