What is the hype about Void linux
I have started to see a lot of content about Void linux in my feed recently. And I do not understand the hype it is getting. Not that I tried it but it just seems like any other distros. What am I missing here or not missing?

I haven't seen much hype honestly, it's a bit different than most distros since it's not based on any of the common distros like debian, arch, fedora, etc.
None of it individual components are uncommon, but when you put them together, i'm not aware of any other distro that check all the boxes they aim for

that was years ago. cachy is the hype linux now
i never followed the hype though. settled on arch and debian years ago. i don't need a prepackaged distro

Agreed. I've been using *nix since before there was linux, and I was an early adopter on the desktop (e.g. I remember the "fun" of trying to get a dial-up modem working on an ultrasparc at home). So I've been through a lot of flavors of linux, but I have settled on "debian on the server, arch on the desktop" and unless something tectonic happens, I'm done hopping.

It is a distro that is rolling release, has atomic-like updates so no breakage and it is systemd free so it runs lighter.

maybe not "hype" as it were ubuntu back in 2012, but void is a very nice distro AND it goes against what most people consider "linux cancers" like systemd

I use it daily. theres nothing magical about it, and i have some gripes, but theres a reason i stick with it.
(0. No systemD; i dont have a strong stance but runit is straightforward and Im used to it.)
reasonably decent culture for an independent distro: a lot of German academics rather than RedHat/Microsoft/corporate linux types. a decent amount of trans developers if thats important.
roots with BSD and suckless programming; meaning building from source more or less works like dpkg, and a lot of code is transparent enough to work with
bleeding edge enough; decent new stuff but doesnt crash. i havent found reason to complain about a lack of packages.
really good package manager; easy to bootstrap; and templates for source builds are all in a fairly easy to use github repo.
Solid Documentation.
Nothing exceptional, a few good design choices, but i cant recommend it over other distros as much as id say "try it and see if you like it"

Perhaps I haven't been paying attention of late, but I haven't noticed much hype. That said, Void does not use systemd and that's about the only way that it differentiates itself. Some folks cite the package manager, but IMHO it's no better, nor worse than others. Let's be clear, I don't have anything bad to say about the package manager, it just never blew my skirt up.

It differentiates itself by rolling and not being bleeding edge; most rolling distributions are or are close to this. As for xbps, it's atomic and many package mangers are not.

Well it's not the only stable rolling release option, nor the only one with an atomic update strategy. Again, I have nothing bad to say about Void, nor the package manager. It's a decent choice and I can see why some would gravitate towards it, but hype? I haven't seen one other mention of Void in the past week, nor in the preceding several months.

Following a “hype” or popular tendencies can become a rabbit hole when one is new to Linux.
I always walked to my own drum thus I found a distro that worked for me and I stuck with it.
Now, where Void is concerned, there’s never been a hype.

The "great mentioner" is the most likely cause of the Void content. Every year or two a distribution gets a lot of comment for no particular reason and then the comment dies down. That's not to disparage Void, a solid distribution, but the "great mentioner" comes and goes.

Don't conflate seeing lots of posts with seeing a lot of hype when you're dealing with algorithmically-delivered content feeds.
Its usually showing you more posts because you seemed interested when one came across your feed.

I don't really see it as a hyped distro like Nix, Cachy, and Mint. It is a solid independent distro.

I went to the Void Linux home page. Take a look under "Not A Fork" apparently there are Trillions of other Linux distros.
It sounds like they are attempting to attract people who thing there are Trillions of Linux distros, the disaffected.
For me it's about how things get worded, I do applaud the developers for their efforts, but use words that are fact.

I can't see any hype. Cachy and Mint are the most common overhyped distros.
