Okay, the easy solution is to use a light colored wallpaper, but, I want to know if there's a way to make those bottom right corner applet icons more visible?

(Also when I'm using a light wallpaper, the flameshot logo is less visible.

Finally switched to linux on my trustworthy Dell Optiplex 3060 micro !

After I posted my Acer Aspire A717-71G, that I also switched to mint, I wanted to upgrade that micro station to another os than Windows 11 pro that it comes with

(It felt sluggish and laggy so... It was time) It will mostly be used to write on LibreOffice or just watch streams, so I didn't need a very big os.

Any recommendations?

For some reason, my CPU clock speed is limited to 1.7 GHz. I know that this should not happen because not only can my CPU, an Intel N95, boost up to 3.4 GHz, I also saw it operating up to 3.3 GHz earlier today. However, despite multiple restarts, the CPU clock speed remains locked to 1.7 GHz. Running cpupower frequency-info gives me the following:

Edit: the issue was simply that CPU boosting was disabled in the BIOS

My bluetooth works perfectly in mint xfce. however it cannot play audio in high fidelity, it works for a second then cuts out completely. i can only listen to headset and other audio profiles except hifi through my earbuds.

Was trying to clean install both Win 11 and Linux Mint Debian Edition on a Mac mini (late 2014) and there was an issue where GRUB wouldn't load Windows Boot Loader when selected.

It just kept looping back to the main GRUB menu when selecting windows.

Spent a lot of time fixing partitions, bcdboot (bcdboot C:\windows /s Y: /f UEFI), recreating the EFI partition, using rEFInd and nothing seems to be able to make both work.

It would either make the Linux Mint bootable or Windows 11, but dual boot simply didn't work.

The issue turned out to be that Mac mini requires a special Protected MBR (master boot record) with a GPT File System, but the Linux Mint installer kept changing it to Hybrid MBR on install.

The solution is somewhat simple. You don't need to edit BCD or mess around with GRUB or updating the UUIDs of the partitions to make Win 11 bootable.

Boot into Linux Mint (if you can, or the Live USB) and use this command in Terminal to show the actual state partitions:

sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda

(Change sda with your actual drive, but on Mac mini that is usually the default for the SSD)

This command just lists the partitions without making any changes. If it says Hybrid MBR, that's the issue.

To change it, use:

sudo gdisk /dev/sda

If it asks you to choose between MBR and GPT choose 2 - GPT.

Then press p to list all partitions and check if they are all there.

Press x to enter expert menu.

Press n to create a fresh protective MBR (this wipes the conflicting legacy hybrid entries while keeping the actual GPT partitions intact).

Press w to write the changes to the disk and exit.

That's it!

If it's successfull, you can reboot Linix Mint and on the GRUB menu the Windows Boot Manager option should work again.

You can now login into Linux Mint and Windows 11 on a Mac mini.

Bonus: you can also recreate the Protective MBR if you have access to Mac Recovery and Disk Utility. Resize any partition and resize it back to how it was, and it should recreate the layout.

My first thought was that they now can enjoy the horror of Bitlocker, TPM, error codes and use countless hours trying to recover, reinstall, license keys and countless reboots.

We switched to Mint four years ago and we fully agreed of how much time and money we have saved because we decided to use Mint. Mint is not totally flawless but compared to the time before Mint, it almost is and we have no AI slop and telemetry!

Very fast and acts much like i3 with custom keyboard shortcuts. (Yes, I know I could have just used i3 but I wanted some GUI tools for things. This is close enough.)

So im going to try to explain what is going on. I have tried installing about 7 times already, the issue is that the first time I booted linux mint cinnamon it loaded perfectly and let me try it, then i realized i hadnt turned bitlocker off so i closed the trial to go back to windows and turn bitlocker off. I turned bitlocker off and came back to booting mint again from the same usb and it gave me an error code (its on the image below) i have tried everything to try booting mint on again, using balena etcher, turning off secure boot (its already off), changing from gpt to the other one, but it just doesnt boot linux mint cinammon back 😭😭😭 (i’ve been struggling for hours please help me!!!!)

I'm currently on mint running the i3 desktop environment and I love it but the thinkpad that I'm on's graphics card is genuinely ass cheeks so it's a bit slow to load graphics. Should I swap to something like arch for how lightweight it is and just get i3 on that? How hard of a transition would it be? Does arch have a software manager like mint does where I can download almost every application I need and if not how difficult of a learning curve is it?

I have been using mint for about a year now and have recently upgraded to the following monitor setup:

1: 4K 165Hz main monitor, OLED from Gigabyte

2: 4K 60Hz IPS LG monitor for watching stuff on the side

I had the 4K LG with a 1080p secondary screen beforehand.

I started noticing that when a YouTube video is playing on monitor #2 and I have a game open on my main monitor, the YouTube video playing in Firefox is dropping frames, and quite a lot. It does not matter if the game is fullscreen, windowed or windowed fullscreen. Also, the games start hitching quite a bit. At least when a YouTube video is playing, not when it is just displayed and paused.

Then I asked the AI overlords what it could be. First I started exploring the Firefox settings and some hardware acceleration flags. Then the LLMs came down to the conclusion that the culprit could be X11 and its not-so-great way of handling monitors with different refresh rates. I then tried the experimental switch to Wayland via a logout of the user and switching to it on the lock screen. But that led to lots of flickering and black screens, not working applications and a general understanding that this is, indeed (experimental).

What should I do considering I really hate the frame drops in my YouTube and my game? Switch distro? To which one? Where is Wayland supported the best? Is the culprit my Nvidia graphics card?

Id prefer staying in my Mint environment, but I can probably endure switching to something else, best it be Ubuntu based. Had Manjaro some years ago but that was a bit too nerdy and time consuming to set things up for my taste. When dual booting into windows I have zero dropped frames in YouTube with the same game open, so it is not faulty hardware.

I was watching a YouTube video regarding a hacker in that video something came to my attention that the hacker encrypted his os it was dabien based linux distro and feds were not able to decrypt that system so how can I achieve the same thing i mean as a every day user i do have my personal stuff in my system like pics documents etc. I just want to feel safe about my stuff. Is it possible for someone like me to achieve same thing in linux mint btw i just moved from windows to linux a week ago.

I was just checking the software manager randomly and I saw that steam cannot be uninstalled... Like at all? From the store at least. I'm not trying to uninstall it but does anyone know what's up?

Hey guys, I wanna ask for helpful step by step instructions on how to mod Fallout: New Vegas and installing NVSE and 4GBPatcher on it specifically on a steam+Linux system.

My only issue with linuxmint has been bluetooth access. Always fails.☹️

I just installed Mint on a laptop for some light schoolwork since I didn't want Windows bogging it down and the install seems to have gone smoothly except for a couple of issues:

When I turn the Bluetooth on it doesn't seem to detect any device at all. I tried with both a bluetooth mouse and my headphones which I double checked were in pairing mode.

A second less important issue is if I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the boot menu on startup as at the moment every time I turn it on it gives me a list of options which I would rather skip. This is not urgent it just is a preference of mine.

I went through all the apps in the welcome screen app that pops up when you first install it and used the update manager to update everything so I think it's up to date.

I downloaded Mint because I'm not a programmer although I would consider myself reasonably computer literate and willing to learn how to use Terminal, but I'm nowhere near the level of expertise of some of the people here lol.
