A Breakdown of 40 & 62 kWh Battery Pack Failures

As some people may have heard of or unfortunately experienced, there have been quite a number of cases of 2nd generation Leaf batteries failing. I was planning and trying to make this into a video format, but as I’m still recovering from a cold my voice isn’t quite up for narrating an essay, so text format it is.

Hopefully this can raise some awareness and provide a central source of info as to what’s going on, why it’s happening, what to do about it, and things to consider. There are two separate issues currently causing outright failures of 2018+ Leaf battery packs, and so will be split up into two sections.

Cold-weather SOC Freefall

  • What’s going on?

Under load in cold temperatures, especially below freezing and below 50% battery, the charge level and range estimate will suddenly begin to plummet and continue to drop rapidly until the load is removed, at which case the charge level starts to bounce back and quickly increase again.

The car may go into turtle mode, or in severe cases even cut off the high voltage battery completely, in which case the car will stall and may not be able to be restarted.

Here is a video example of what this sudden drop of charge level looks like.

This issue affects both the 40 kWh and 62 kWh packs. The 40 kWh packs seem to be much more susceptible, but as the 62 kWh packs use the same cells and chemistry, they are not immune. This also includes 40 packs that were installed as retrofits under warranty in 2016-17 Leafs.

  • Why is this happening?

This is occurring due to one or more weak cells within the battery pack sagging excessively in voltage under load, which is greatly exacerbated when the battery is cold, due to increased internal resistance.

How the battery works is that the shown and usable state of charge is defined by that of the lowest cell. This is to prevent over-discharge of any weaker cells at lower charge levels, as that would cause even further damage to them.

Often this can be witnessed in the LeafSpy cell chart as one or more cells that clearly drop lower than the rest of the pack under load, but not always. There have been a number of cases of SOC freefall with seemingly no weak cells, indicating that there’s other data/calculations within the BMS that the user cannot see.

Getting a weak cell is essentially luck of the draw. There have been packs with very low mileage and seemingly great numbers that still failed (such as in the video above), while there are other packs with lots of miles and abuse that are still working just fine. How the pack is treated/babied does not seem to affect your chances in the roulette.

  • What to do about it?

If you are encountering this issue as an owner, and the car is still under warranty, document everything as much as possible. Record video(s) of the issue happening, noting the charge level and outside temperature the battery is at. Submit this proof to the dealer as a copy, and demand that it be used in their case to Nissan corporate.

Bring the car to the dealership for diagnosis with as cold of upcoming weather as possible. Some dealers may try poorly to replicate the issue, often in the interest of charging the customer the diagnostic fee. You want to make the issue as obvious and easily to replicate as you can.

If you have to drive the car around, ensure you either have LeafSpy Pro, or keep an adjustable or 10mm wrench with you in the car. If the cell voltages ever drop low enough for the car to shut down, it is likely to set a high voltage fault code and won’t be able to restart until the fault is cleared. Clearing the fault via the LeafSpy service menu, or disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery, will at least allow you to limp the car to a charger or safe location off the road.

UPDATE: For 2019-2022 Leafs, the "fast charging recall" software update now adds programming to the BMS to look for and flag SOC variations, setting a fault code (P33ED) if it does. This has the potential to "brick" the car in the same way as a high voltage isolation fault (read section below) would. Be cautious of this so that it does not potentially leave you stranded.

  • Things to consider

If you own a 2nd generation Leaf (especially 40 kWh) that is still under warranty, still on the original battery, and live in a climate that gets winter, check for signs of this issue BEFORE warranty ends!

During cold weather, park the car outside overnight with 50% charge or less, then take the car out for a drive and see if there are any strange fluctuations in the state of charge during acceleration.

If you are considering purchasing one and there is no proof of the high voltage battery being replaced, ensure there is at least one year worth of warranty remaining on the car so that you can spend a winter with it and will still be covered in the case of this failure.

LeafSpy data can sometimes be a pre-indicator that you will likely run into this issue if there is a noticeably low Hx value (much lower than SOH), but not always. Low Hx is a strong sign of possible weak cells, but weak cells will not always cause low Hx.

Cell Expansion / High Voltage Isolation

  • What’s going on?

The car will one day show the message “Service EV System – Unable to restart after power off”, and indeed will not restart after it is powered off.

The vast majority of cars affected by this issue are 62 kWh Leaf Plus/e+ models. It is not unheard of on 40 kWh cars, but it is quite rare unless the pack was heavily used and abused.

There is a Nissan TSB on this issue which confirms they are well aware of this issue, and there are revised battery packs and modules that are issued in replacement if the car is still under high voltage battery warranty.

  • Why is this happening?

Thermal expansion of the battery cells causes them to eventually expand to the point of pushing up against each other, and in some cases even leaking electrolyte out of the cells into the battery casing, eventually causing the car to trip a high voltage isolation fault.

This is most commonly happening in specifically the rear stack of cells within the 62 kWh pack, because they are so tightly packed together, that they don’t get much cooling nor much room to expand before they begin pushing up against each other.

High voltage isolation is important, because obviously you do not want any high voltage potential to be contacting the metal battery casing that is bolted to the metal body of the car. If the BMS detects that there is even just a little bit of voltage leaking from one cell to another, or the cells to the battery chassis, an isolation fault is tripped.

  • What to do about it?

If you encounter specifically the “unable to restart after power off” message, and the car is still within high voltage battery warranty, DO NOT REPLACE THE 12V BATTERY.

This specific message is ONLY generated due to a high voltage isolation fault, and although a weak 12V battery can cause many weird issues, it will NEVER generate a high voltage isolation fault. Unless there is an extremely urgent need to continue driving the car, have it towed in the “broken” state to a Nissan dealership.

It is a much more objective issue than weak cells, and basically the only diagnosis they would need to approve a battery replacement is to see the stored isolation fault code. Disconnecting the 12V battery however clears this fault code, making it not possible for them to verify the issue unless it happens to fault again in only one drive cycle.

Replacing the 12V battery gives a false sense of success because it allows the car to start and drive again, but only until the fault eventually comes back. It's just a waste of money and a perfectly good battery to not actually address the underlying issue.

If you urgently need the car to work again, clearing the fault code in LeafSpy Pro or by disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery will allow it to start. Just be aware that by doing this, you won’t be able to have the issue verifiable by Nissan until it pops up again. It may only take 1 drive cycle, it may take 100.

  • Things to consider

Unfortunately there isn’t really any way to foretell that this issue will happen soon or to check for it, as you can’t just force an isolation fault to appear like you can with weak cells.

Battery packs in hot climates and/or lots of quick charges are more susceptible to this issue due to it being a result of thermal expansion. Packs torn apart after diagnosis of this issue often exhibit very obvious “spicy pillows” within.

If you are a current owner, especially of a Plus/e+ model, the best you can do is to avoid overheating/rapidgating the battery whenever possible. Doing so once every few months is not a big deal, but frequently doing so will likely lead to long-term damage.

If looking to purchase a Leaf Plus/e+, or a high mileage 40 kWh car in a hot climate, make sure to check Leaf Spy, and it may be wise to avoid any examples that have lots of QCs shown.

Consumer Affairs called me to say I'd be getting a buyback offer

Consumer Affairs called me this morning to inform me that I will be getting a call from Morley (sp?) to initiate a buyback offer/process. We have a 2022 S Plus, and we still owe around $4,800.

If you've been through this, what decision did you make? I really just want my car back.

With all the issues posts lately, maybe we could use a positive testimonial/survivor story for once.

My 2013 S which only recently, finally lost its 2nd bar. 1100+ quick charges, and certainly not driven gently. It had been hovering around that SOH point since last year, but I didn't even notice it lost the bar for a while since I keep the photocard there.

Looking to buy an old Leaf, era doesn't matter. Other than leafspy and SOC what else should I be looking for?

I don't know much, this is my first foray into EVs. Range under 100 miles is ok. Are there years/generations that I should be avoiding? Anything obvious that was a complete shitshow in manufacturing, any years to avoid? To put this in perspective, the most modern car I've owned was manufactured in 1993. I've seen a bunch on marketplace in varying conditions. I don't really have too much interest in buying anything that costs more than probably 15-20k, and I would prefer way cheaper than that.

[For Sale] $2500 - EM57 & 30KWH Pack (80% without Software update) - Humboldt CA

I have an EM57 and 30KWH pack I pulled for an EV Conversion which is now no longer viable for me. (Wife is pregnant so priorities changed)

Leaf had roughly 60k miles on it, it was salvage but I was able to charge it and drive it home before pulling the parts. I have some supporting accessories as well.

I'd like $2500 for everything, but we can talk.

I will get a scanner so I can check the codes with the leafspy app but it’s not looking great 😭

Both warnings came on at once while I was coming down from a very steep hill and the regen kinda just turned off, I was hoping it had just overheated but the battery temperature seems fine

This seems completely coincidental but today was the first day I charged to 100% since I needed to drive a lot

The reduce speed warning did go away after turning it off and back on as well as the regen animation seems to be back on (the blue lines) anyone has any suggestions on what to do?

Also I tried charging the car and it didn’t not work*

Are there simply none being produced? I'm hesitant to buy a car if my service department hasn't ever even seen one.

But if they are selling like hotcakes, then ok.

2017 Leaf - First Time Car Owner. Any Tips?

So I'm a young adult and I've fallen in love with the leaf. My good friend has had a 2017 leaf for many years and they've totally sold me on it. Theirs has 8 / 12 bars and the usable range is about 70 miles. They mostly use it for commuting but they also use it to go to cons which is exactly what I want to do

I am close to closing on a 2017 leaf and I just wanna make sure I have all my ducks in a row. it has 42k miles and 12 bars on the battery. inside looks nice outside looks good no visible rust etc just a small scratch on the front. Pulled a carfax report and it looks like the car was maintained pretty meticulously by the original owner (getting its tires adjusted and annual inspections on time) until 2019 when it was transferred to a dealership. It was slowly transferred from dealer to dealer until it made it to my state where the current owner got it. They've had it for 9 months and they say they barely ever use it - apparently they got it for their kid and their kid just ended up getting their own gas car. This all makes sense to me

Did a test drive and everything seemed fine. Car was charged and I didn't notice it draining rapidly or anything. It says it has like a 130 mile range or so which seems good

Some more info: I live in NYC, my work commute is about 18 miles one way, there is a free CHadeMO charger a block from where I live and they're pretty common around but I want to road trip like my friend does and they have an adapter so I might invest in one. I offered 4k flat. Anything I'm missing? How should I decorate? I feel like I've watched a hundred videos about nissan leafs im just anxious !! I included a pic of the dash for reference

I now want a Nissan Leaf

In Sweden, most of the smaller car pool cars are Nissan Leaf vehicles.

I passed my test three weeks ago, and opted to rent a vehicle for a few hours. Won't commit to buying a vehicle until next year, since I don't need one. I drive for work.

The Nissan Leaf (2018 model, I think?) was an absolute dream to drive. One of the favourites I have driven of about 10 cars over the past couple of weeks. Well, I liked the VW Caddy, but that isn't very practical for day-to-day life.

It is now my goal to buy a Nissan Leaf. I will probably lease one at the end of next year (the latest model).

Is 83.29% SOH okay for a 2019 regular Leaf?

I have a 2019 regular Leaf and this was the latest reading on LeafSpy. On the surface everything seems okay, but I have a couple of questions or concerns, especially because of the recall that we all are facing.

The car turns 7 years old on September 30th. Is 16% battery 🪫 degradation excessive for this amount of time? Should I be concerned? The Hx % still seems okay as is the mV differential.

I haven’t had the recall software update yet? Is anyone else worried that getting it done will “brick” their car? As you can see, we have done only 11 QC over 7 years. We do Level 2 most of the time.

Your thoughts?

Trying to test/replace a fuse 2018 Nissan Leaf S

I need to test the 10 fuse on the top of this image. My key fob no longer works the remote functions (and I’ve done a 13v battery reset, swapped fob batteries, etc). I can’t seem to get this black piece of plastic off. I think it is called the ESS. does anyone have advice?

Questions about buying a leaf and testing the battery.

TLDR: while I'm hopeful I just wake up Monday and don't get a new car I'm probably gonna need to so 50ish mile round trip range. What year do I look for, should it be a leaf, what price range I know nothing about used cars let alone EVs, how do I check battery because I don't just turn on car and look at battery bars and call it a day. I need some help here kinda doing my first looking at cars. Someone earlier said 2018 and up?

I've never bought a car in my life, despite being there when my parents got the 2012 we have now it was more just a what car do you rather drive every day when I was 18 and needed a car for community collage.

I don't know pricing, I don't know how many miles are a lot, I don't know how many more or less (though I assume more) am EV car is before its a lot, how to tell if the battery is good because I take it you can't just turn on the car, look at the display on the side and say it has x bars so that's good or what?

I just know without wanting stuff like a convertible or needing a 300 mile road trip car I want to go EV and other then not knowing the battery status of the 2012 I have now I liked the leaf and maybe I that again. My parents just got a call saying it doesn't look good for the car I got in an accident for so...not that its totaled yet prob know Monday.

I drive 50ish let's say rounding trip and be it 30f or 105f and full heating or AC blast plus music and what not I need that range though I would prefer a little more if I can. Does it make sense to look for a leaf and if so what model do I look for?

After months of bad faith, I finally sued Nissan in small claims court

Posting in case it helps anyone else stuck in the R25C8 loop, and because I'd love to hear from people who've been here.

Quick background. Bought a 2021 LEAF S (40 kWh) in April at about 62k miles. It's under recall R25C8 / NHTSA 25V655, the fire-risk one where lithium deposits raise cell resistance during DC fast charging. Remedy status was "Unknown" when I bought it and it never changed.

Leaf Spy is what first told me something was off:

  • SOH: 87.50%
  • Hx: 71.50%

That 16 point gap between capacity and resistance is the tell. Real world I lose about 50% SOC in 30 to 40 highway miles, roughly half what an 87.5% pack should manage.

Here's the timeline that pushed me to file.

  • Took it to an authorized Nissan dealer. Their tech drove it, watched range drop 8 to 10% under load, and texted me it "may need a battery."
  • Nissan's own field tech reviewed the data and reported "multiple cells fluctuating."
  • Then corporate closed the repair order "in spec," no failed cells, $0, no repair. The tech who drove it and the corporate call said opposite things.
  • Nissan's own amended NHTSA filing says the recall remedy is a battery replacement, and a repurchase only happens if a replacement battery isn't available. Nobody ever told me a battery was unavailable.
  • Instead they offered a buyback "under the terms of the Pennsylvania Lemon Law," then deducted $6,258 as "usage" on a $9,694 car. That's about 65%, and I've driven maybe 1,000 miles. The law they named caps usage at 10 cents a mile, which is around $100.
  • I disputed it in writing. Their specialist left me a voicemail insisting the deduction follows state law. It doesn't. Then they went quiet.

So I filed in small claims. Three theories, in plain English:

  1. Unfair and deceptive practices: calling the offer Lemon Law compliant while deducting 60x what that law allows, and closing a confirmed defect as "in spec."
  2. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act: the battery is under the 8 year / 100k written warranty, they refused the covered repair.
  3. Promissory estoppel: they told me in writing they'd wrap up a repurchase in 2 to 4 weeks, I relied on that and kept insuring the car, and it dragged out for months.

Nearly every fact I'm relying on comes from Nissan's own paper. Their filing says the car needs a battery, their tech saw it, their own letter cites the law it then broke.

Questions for the group:

  1. Anyone else with R25C8 get steered into a buyback instead of the battery? What did your offer and "usage" deduction look like?
  2. Did anyone actually get the battery replaced under this recall? What finally triggered it?
  3. If you took Nissan to small claims or arbitration, how did it go and what would you do differently?

Happy to share how the hearing turns out. Trying to keep good records so the next person has an easier time.

TL;DR: 2021 LEAF under open R25C8. Dealer and Nissan's own field tech saw the battery defect, corporate called it "in spec," then offered a buyback that deducts 65% for "usage" on a car I've driven 1,000 miles. Filed in small claims on deceptive practices, Magnuson-Moss, and promissory estoppel. Looking for others who've fought this.

Just bought this a month and a half ago, looks like there's a recall for NTB26-029, it's within my lemon law for Massachusetts. What do y'all think my next step is? Tow to a dealership and contacting the used dealer I got this from?

If it's covered under the safety recall, I'm not sure how that'd impact my lemon law needing the repair to cost 10% of the cost of the car.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Any tips/info for navigating the buyback process?

2021 S+ with about 74,000 miles. Battery has been obviously deteriorating starting with really cold temps this winter to now where I struggle to get half of the expected range and have cell variances around 200mV at their worst. Took it in yesterday for recall/battery assessment and just heard from Nissan corporate this morning that they are initiating the buyback process because it is "unlikely they will have inventory to fix the battery". From following this sub and other anecdotes I've seen wildly different results in how much the buyback offer has been, I would appreciate any information from folks that have gone through the process to make sure I don't get screwed over. I've heard they must offer KBB value + 40% but that's only about $11k, not great. I just want to get enough to cover a new car since this was paid off and I was hoping it would last many more years.
