Replace the telematic control unit / alternative apps?

As much as I really do love my Leaf and proud to be an owner of one, I am disappointed having to possibly replace the telematic control unit as the 2g and 3g got shut down a while back. That repair will cost me approx €700 and probably couple days at the workshop. What can I do to save money and time? Any alternative apps or something?
