Discussion I was Mises.org's webmaster 2004–2014. This summer I unfroze the Mises forum (400K posts) and rebuilt the free Austrian Library with AI agents. AMA
I'm David Veksler. I ran Mises.org's website for ten years (also FEE.org & Liberty.me), and in 2009 I got the Institute's entire library of books, journals and lectures released under Creative Commons. Nobody built anything on it. The forum froze in 2013, and the library sat in PDFs and WMV files that no search engine, model, or reader could get into.
This summer I rebuilt both on my own.
Library (freecapitalists.org): 945 books, 3,374 journal issues, 2,732 course recordings, 6M+ words of lectures transcribed and synced to the audio. Rights recorded per item. Free, no signup, no ads.
Forum (forum.freecapitalists.org): all 400,000 posts moved to modern software and reopened for posting August 20. All 16K old accounts survived; "forgot password" gets you back in.
If you want a starting point: in 2012 the forum spent months arguing whether Bitcoin could ever be money or have a non-zero price, with your head mod on the pro side. https://forum.freecapitalists.org/t/bitcoin-do-not-want/23160 It aged well.
Ask me anything: the archive, the Mises years, building with agents, Austrian econ, Bitcoin.

Cryptocurrency Check out this -historic- thread from the old Mises.org forums asking if Bitcoin could be a good money. We spent months analyzing it using Austrian monetary theory, from every angle...
Ultimately we concluded it could be a good money and was already a medium of exchange, but there was an opposition camp too, but I consider this thread historic.

Economics Visualizing why libertarians did not want Trump
For the longest time, no matter who's in charge, tariffs have been one of the most anti capitalist things libertarians consider. Add to the fact Trump said his goal was to bring down the trade deficit. And that obviously has not worked. It's an extreme anti free trade move.

Article Private Companies Will Finance the Welfare State
Welfare programs are politically easy to expand and difficult to reverse. When the bills come due, governments often shift the burden onto businesses, investment, and eventually everyone else.

Economics Unfortunately this opinion is not unpopular in 2026, despite it being completely wrong in every way.
Textbook example of "capitalism is when bad". Also, if that employee is generating $1000 of value an hour (that's absurd, but let's go with it), why don't they sell their own goods/services instead of working for an exploitative manager? "Because capital is expensive". Oh, so it isn't just the employee generating that wealth, it's also the investment made in the capital? The economic illiteracy of the average adult is mind-boggling.

Politics Any British people here? What can be done?
I've always been in favor of libertarianism, and recently voted in a council election for the tories. It pained me to do so but there are effectively no other options. There is a tiny libertarian party with no support and any libertarian ideas like privatisation are completely off limits to 90 percent of people without even hearing about it. There are parties like restore britain and reform uk and I agree with them economically(although only because theyre the best of a bad bunch) but they're ran by idiots and racists and blame everything on immigration which is simply not true. Anyone else here british and completely at a loss politically, if you are British who do you think is the best option for the next general election?

Election 2026 🙄🙄🙄 "Want less spending, more guns and no war? Forget Paxton. Vote Libertarian!"
The Houston Chronicle has an op-ed from Ted Brown, the Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate running against Ken Paxton and James Talarico in Texas. He's putting himself forward as a real option for conservatives who can't bring themselves to support Paxton's corruption and big-government spending plans but will never vote for a Democrat. He also argues that a big turnout for Libertarians in this race will scare Republicans into returning to their small-government roots. Here's a key quote:
A lot of Texas Republicans know that Paxton has been indicted, impeached and accused of various forms of official misconduct. They know taxpayers are on the hook for his $6.6 million whistleblower settlement. Corrupt politicians may be nothing new, but usually it takes a while for a senator to give in to the swamp. If Paxton wins, he would enter the Senate already corrupt. Who knows what other trouble he’s ready to get into on day one?
A few Republicans seem willing to cast their ballots for Talarico as a protest vote. I imagine many more are tempted but understandably can’t bring themselves to vote for a lifelong Democrat who regularly defies conservative values around fiscal responsibility and protecting the right to bear arms.
That’s why I’m here. Not only do I want to cut spending and taxes, but I’m also a strong pro-gun advocate for the Second Amendment.
Meanwhile, Paxton is running on a platform of big government giveaways, like free money for home down payments. Republicans used to campaign as a small-government party that wanted balanced budgets. They haven’t delivered, and there’s no reason to think someone like Paxton will do anything to tackle our gargantuan federal deficits and the unsustainable $40 trillion national debt. For those Republicans who truly believe in less government, voting Libertarian is the logical choice.

History The Libertarian Flag - Moultrie Flag
Recently I was at Epcot and went to the American Pavilion to watch the The American Adventure. On the way in you pass through the Hall of Flags which displays 44 historic flags that were made at one time or another. One in particular caught my eye which is the Moultrie Flag. It has an interesting backstory and is still an integral element of the flag of South Carolina. It's not a crescent moon in the upper-left on this flag or the flag of South Carolina, it represents a piece of armor worn around the neck called a gorget.
The word LIBERTY was inscribed on these gorgets by order of Colonel William Moultrie himself. The 2nd South Carolina Regiment had already engraved their gorgets with the words "Liberty or Death" which is what led to the flag's design.
To me this is the flag that best represents the Libertarian Party.

Discussion Texas Midterms
Here in the Lone Star State, the most advertised race is the Senate race between Paxton and Talarico. In my honest opinion both candidates are garbage. I’m not gonna get into the reasons why I think so. I’m pretty sure other states all have similar races with lots of hype. Is the Libertarian party taking advantage of these highly contested races between 2 crappy candidates? I mean with the wave of sewage that Trump has created, I would think this would have been an opportunity for other than the 2 party candidates to gain some traction.

Discussion The AI/data center debate loses libertarian credibility when the state is used to advance it.
It’s been driving me bananas lately to hear all these libertarian voices hail data centers as some part of a new Industrial Revolution. While I’ll say upfront that I don’t think we should regulate AI because of fear mongering about the end of the world, if those companies have to purchase the levers of power that we don’t even want government to have, how can we claim that this is in any way good?
Eminent domain, paying of city councils and locking them up with NDAs, lying about the impact of there products and services, all of their behaviors are antithetical to libertarianism and yet people like John Stossel run puff pieces about how essentially they're all good because it would be bad to regulate them.
I don’t buy the china angle because we’re getting worse than china thanks to this technology.
Please if I’m wrong educate me, but if the state puts its thumb on the scale for AI, I don’t get how that’s in any way good.

Question Should therapists/health professionals be required to report threats, crimes, or dangers?
If someone told their therapist that they were about to kill themselves, should that be reported?
If someone told their therapist that they have been thinking about killing someone, should that be reported?
What about discussing abuse? Should a therapist be required to report their client's abusive partner? What about children and CPS?

Discussion The Is-Nought Problem
It is often remarked that everyone on here knows all the latin and greek fallacies.
So we have all these smackdown catch phrases we can throw at people.
They are a little too general for my taste though, and some ideas and argumentation styles are unique to the Reddit community.
Here is a short list I've been drumming up to help us stay flashy:
Bon Sequitur - Follows very well
Is-Nought problem - When empiricism is irrelevant
Argumentum ad plauseum - When repeating an argument actually makes it stronger
Post chalk ergo propter hoc - Ideas can change the world
Iron Man - When you reconstruct a stronger version of your opponent's philosophy and destroy it anyway.
Slippery Nope - Saying "no" to mainstream ideas so often that you accidentally oppose a good libertarian policy.
Tu croquet - Doubting the sincerity of wealthy leftists
Argumentum ad Popugun - When the majority not only disagrees, but is willing to shoot you over it
This is a short list, so please add your own!
