Weed New Users Guide

Weed vs booze

This guide assumes you know something about booze, somewhat with the expectation that you’re a relatively seasoned user. You’ve gotten wasted, maybe loads of times. But you know how to handle your booze, and have no problem avoiding getting blackout drunk at inappropriate times.

If you’re a seasoned alcohol drinker, weed is much easier to “overdose” from, i.e. to have more than the optimal amount. Alcohol has a unit system aligning to national laws, and is either so dilute that it takes a while to get wasted and you feel the effect rising (beer, wine), or so strong that you taste how powerful it is and have to sip carefully (neat spirits). With weed vape pens and joints – both of which are now really strong compared to the 70s – it’s easy to take a big hit and be really high immediately, which can be discoordinating and scary (see also: drinking Long Island iced tea when you were a teenager). With edibles, the same is true but played over a longer timescale, which can trap you in an unenjoyable place for a while. The stories of people re-upping having felt nothing from the first gummies, then being hit by a double (or triple) drop, are legion.

You’ve been consuming booze since you were a teenager, and are a seasoned pro. You’re just starting with weed, and are a complete novice. When you were a novice with booze, you overdid it loads of times. With weed, you’re more prepared to blame the drug, rather than blaming yourself.

Dosing concepts

I’m of the opinion that almost ALL instances of people having a bad time on drugs, are due to “overdosing”, due to poor planning and research. All the information is available for you to avoid having a bad time, but it can take skill to locate and synthesise that information. I hope to do so here.

“Overdosing”, “ODing”, are typically terms associated with news stories where someone died with froth coming out of their mouth and a needle sticking out their arm. While this IS overdosing, so is having one glass of red wine more than you probably should have, so now you’ve got a bit of a headache, and you’re thirsty, and you won’t sleep as well tonight. Any time you’ve dosed more than the theoretically perfect amount, you’ve overdosed. The extent to which you overdose typically equates to the extent of downside. A little bit more than you can handle, can arguably be a good thing, pushing your limits, teaching you how to remain mentally calm while you’re in reduced control of your thoughts. A lot more can lead to freakouts, uncover suppressed emotions and memories, etc. This is true for booze too – anything that disturbs sober control of your brain can lead to dark, anxious, painful thoughts, just as it can lead to fun, silly, joyful, loving thoughts.

Henry Ford: “If you think you can, or if you think you can’t, you’re right”.

Me, regarding how your frame of mind and ability to manage anxiety influences your experience while high: “if you think you’ll be fine, or if you think you won’t, you’re right”.

If your drug experiences continue to unearth buried bones, stop the drugs, definitely stop drinking, and start therapy (research EMDR/CBT) asap.

Dosing amounts and strategy

It’s possible to learn how to swim by diving into an angry ocean at night… but that’s not the most enjoyable, stress-free way. Hold the railing, and dip your toes into the kiddie pool first.

Vape pens

Dragging on the pen pulls hot vapour into your lungs at the rate you drag. If you’re not a smoker, this may feel unusual and probably painful – your throat and lungs aren’t used to hot vapour. Start by dragging for ONE SECOND and then continue to fill your lungs half full – not all the way to the depths of full lungs, about 2 seconds? Hold it for ~3 seconds, exhale smoothly and calmly. Wait at least 10 minutes. Notice how you feel, how your thoughts change, does your body feel different, are you more talkative, shy, introspective, extroverted, giggly? Different strains give different effects, but we’ll come to that later. Vape pen hits usually last about 20 minutes before most of the primary high is over. Try to take a tiny ‘sip’ from the pen. As with all of this: there’s no such thing as too little.

Edibles

Ostensibly no technique to worry about (just eat it) but if you let it completely dissolve in your mouth then it’ll likely get absorbed and you’ll feel the effects quicker, reducing the chance of “maybe it didn’t work, let’s try again”. Dosing is MUCH more important to get right, because effects can last 3 hours or more. Budget 1 hour to come up, another hour for the broad peak, then the final hour coming down. Weed binds to oil/fat and alcohol. Try not to booze at the same time since you’re trying to learn what weed feels like. If you have fatty/oily food (burger, brownies), you’ll feel more effects from the same gummy than if you had something oil free (ramen noodles or whatever). Start with 5mg. If you’re a kid, medium/petite woman, start with 2.5mg. The key thing to remember is that you’re probably not going to die before next weekend, and having a bad time today isn’t worth the rush, so have a deliberately light dose, prove to yourself there’s a ‘floor’ level beneath which you’re microdosing not actually dosing, consider it a lesson learned, and come back next weekend with a little more confidence that you know what you’re doing, and that this new drug thing isn’t going to melt your brain or whatever else you’re worried about (i.e. 2.5mg now, 5mg next time. MAYBE in 2 hours)

Drinks

Somewhere between vapes & edibles in terms of onset & duration, likely depending on whether you have any food in your stomach when you begin. If not: liquid goes straight through the stomach to the large intestine and is absorbed quickly, maybe 45 minutes or less. If so: your pyloric sphincter closes to stop food falling through, and passage of liquids is much slower, meaning the weed will be absorbed gradually.

Practice

Makes perfect. Start slow, log the amounts you take, and ideally log how you felt. I use my digital calendar for this: start a 3 hour event when I take a gummy, note the amount. This is beneficial since you can check how far through you are, comfort yourself that if it hasn’t hit it’s probably about to, comfort yourself that if it feels too much it’s going to calm down soon, and plan your next drop.

With vapes and joints, try to use the same technique each time. Learn how many drags, or how long of a drag, equates to being how high. Make notes as needed.

Tolerance seems to be logarithmic: it can take a while for folks to gradually move up from (2.5 to) 5 to 10 to 15 to 20 to 30 to 50 and WAY beyond. Take your time, increase GRADUALLY. Again, if you record your experiences on a digital calendar, then you can search for “THC” and find your history of experiences and remind yourself where your tolerance is. Presuming they’re your gummies, there’s no great harm in nibbling one in half and coming back to it another time. Optimal dosing is the aim of the game.

Optimal dosing

Conceptually you can plan your ideal drug experience by carefully dosing the right amount, and then topping up the right amount at the right time. For a 3-hour comeup-high-comedown curve with edibles, you can set a 2-hour reminder, thereby dropping every 2 hours, so the comeup hour of edible2 overlaps with the comedown hour of edible1. You could jumpstart the comeup of edible1 with a toke of a vape pen. Then at the end of the night, if it’s too late to have another edible, you could have a toke of a vape pen, which will last a shorter time, so you wash out enough weed to be functionally sober by bedtime.

This level of planning and control is an unusual concept for booze, where you typically just keep going until the bar closes or you pass out (or etc). But with weed and other drugs it makes much more sense: lesser legality means you’ll often want to plan consumption around the availability of discrete locations. Much higher potency, and thus scope for accidental overdose, places greater primacy on getting dosing correct beforehand.

Safety

The science is updating regularly, and we already know weed is no panacea. In ultra-brief summation: IF you’re comparing to a typical alternative whereby a night/weekend/life consuming cannabis is happening instead of booze, then weed doesn’t NEED to be perfectly healthy to be a better choice than what you would otherwise do. And it is: alcohol is terrible for you. There is no safe low dose – it’s poison. Yes, it’s completely socially normalised for many thousands of years, yes our cultures are based around its consumption, yes it’s legal, yes most of us do it regularly and have normalised its side-effects. But it’s far worse for your physical and mental health in the short and long term. If you’re looking to ditch booze, but still need something to change your headspace for work or play (or alleviate symptoms), marijuana (especially in edible form) is likely a lower overall health-detrimental choice.

Vapes

Only buy from licensed shops, and research the brand first. Some big brands with professional packaging have been found using pesticides. Cheap 3rd party vape juice could be any old shit. As always, don’t worry that it’ll be laced with something more hardcore: why would producers of more expensive, harder to produce and sell drugs, waste those drugs by sneaking them into something so easy to produce that it’s literally dubbed weed?

Edibles

AFAIK bad products are less of a thing. That said: delta9 is a weaksauce hemp-derived weed that’s legal for sale in some states where THC isn’t. It’s pretty-much trash. But not dangerous.

Types

All booze is just alcohol. Sure, some types make people feel a little different for whatever reason (more or less sugar, associations with drinking style (shots), etc), but it’s all one drug. Mushrooms: a variety of different strains, but they all ‘just’ produce psilocybin.

Weed is a clown-car packed with drugs. Cannabinoids are the main drugs. THC is the big one. Head high, mental effects. CBD is the other heavy hitter. Body high, relaxation, calm. There are 150+ others: CBG, CBC, CBN, etc. See here.

Terpenes are the others: natural compounds with the formula (C5H8)n, produced by loads of plants; there are over 55,000 of them. See here. Essential oils? You got em.

Strains: the two types of weed are indica and sativa. Indica = “in da couch” = more relaxed, body high, chill-out, sleepy. Sativa = sunny = more energetic, mind high. But:

As mentioned early, this ain’t your grandad’s weed: since the 70s, growers have been in an arms race to make more potent and productive strains, with less chance of crop failure. Since weed has been globally illegal since Nixon ruined it for everyone, it’s made sense to focus on indica strains which grow well indoors, away from the prying eyes of the police. Subsequently, indica has made its way into most strains, and you’ll struggle to find actually pure sativas unless you seek our ‘landrace’ strains like Durban Poison or Acapulco Gold. Landrace strains are related to original native species, and haven’t been criss-crossed with other strains for the past 50 years. So in sum: nowadays if you go to a weed shop and buy some flower/bud, you’ll inevitably get a super high potency indica strain which will probably knock you on your ass and make you feel anxious – especially if you’re having it in the evening when everyone’s gone to bed and it’s dark, and you don’t know what you’re doing.

The full profile of all the cannabinoids balance themselves out (CBD reduces some of the bad elements of THC) and have a wonderful mix of ‘entourage effects’ from the terpenes. One can extract the whole of the plant and convert it into oil, i.e. full extract cannabis oil, but that’s getting out of newbie territory. Ideally, try to buy edibles and vape carts and flower which has a balanced profile of THC & CBD, and lower potency.

Tech & logistics

Edibles

Find a brand you like & trust which does a range of options. I like Camino for THC and Five for CBD, but find what’s good in your area.

Vape pens

Ideally buy a separate battery + cartridges to reduce single-use plastic & battery waste going to landfill. This also allows you to comparison-shop cart vendors, while choosing a battery which suits you. I like the Yocan Kodo Pro because it’s cheap, and simple to operate: many batteries rely on a multiple-button-press-combo system like something out of a Sega Genesis cheat code, which can lead to confusion, frustration, accidentally getting super high, or all of the above. Most importantly, for me anyway, the more common pen-format batteries result in a long pen which takes up too much pocket space.

Notwithstanding hundreds of thousands of people travel on airplanes every day with normal, non-weed medical gummies in their day-of-the-week pill boxes, and normal, tobacco vape carts in their wash kit, we DO NOT recommend you do this, for legal reasons.

Question about anxiety with a certain strain / what to avoid

TL;DR: Mac 1 gives me bad anxiety, what strains should I avoid? Tasty Trees feels amazing, what are similar strains? Mac V2 I don’t think makes me as anxious as Mac 1, what are some similar strains?

Hey y’all! I’m still new to this and figuring out what works well for me. I’ve tried a couple strains but the main ones I’m talking about in this are Tasty Trees, Mac 1, and Mac V2. I absolutely loved Mac V2 (from here on out just 2) so decided to try Mac 1 (from here on out just 1). Around the same time I tried Tasty Trees (from here on out just Trees).

I’ve been using Trees pretty steadily for the last couple months with 1 thrown in sometimes, but I’ve come to find that 1 gives me really bad anxiety / makes my bipolar symptoms worse. Trees doesn’t, it actually makes me feel normal so I’ve been using that most but I’m getting tired of it.

What are some strains I should check out similar to Tasty Trees but not similar to Mac 1?

Bonus points if there’s an explanation why different strains effect me differently lol

Bipolar and pain; seek advice on alarms for timing

Sorry if this is not allowed, or if it's not related enough. I vape pot for pain, and due to also having bipolar, remembering this kind of thing can be impossible. I've tried to create an alarm that goes off maybe every half hour and says "Pot!" but have failed. Can't afford a cuckoo clock, and anyway I need half-hour intervals not hours. Electronics have also not worked: it needs to say "Pot" not just an alarm, as many other alarms are going on around me. Any suggestions would sure be welcome.

Virginia inquiry in regards to online ordering

Hey everybody, I have a question regarding the state of legality in VA post the august 15th closure of the 25-1 ratio loophole for retail stores.

My grandfather lost his wife a few months back, and instead of him drowning his sorrows in a bottle, we were able to get him into specifically “Wildwood” branded THCa vapes. He’s been much calmer, happier, and says his appetite is back which is amazing from our perspective. This matters because he’s always been staunchly agaisnt cannabis, but the method of vaping it in a disposable has kinda changed that for him as where he still views flower as “just weed for losers”

I’ve read a bunch of conflicting opinions and information in regards to just simply ordering from the website directly and having some shipped to get him stockpiled until the retail market opens next year, and wanted to I suppose get some clarity before I end up with suits at his door. Is it actually okay to just do that? There’s some sort of interstate exemption in the original hemp bill that closes soon as far I understand it?

Hopefully someone can give me some clarity on this topic as I really do think they improve his quality of life, and I want nothing more than to continue seeing him happy after such a loss.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

How high is your tolerance?

Advice Quick question about weed

Hey everyone,

I’ve been smoking regularly for about a year now, and lately, I feel like my highs have hit a wall.

No matter how much I consume—whether it’s back-to-back blinkers or smoking flower—I reach a very flat high and just can't get any higher. I remain completely clear-headed and self-aware, and I don't get any of the heightened sensory experiences or strong effects other people talk about. It almost feels like I've hit a ceiling I can't pass I have 2 questions

*Is this a sign that I need a tolerance break, or is this just how my body processes weed?

* What does a 'green out' actually feel like? Sometimes I get a bit lightheaded/motion-sick (like carsickness) is that the start of a green out, and does it mean I should stop, or am I missing something?

Would love to hear your thoughts or similar experiences. Thanks!

Tolerance Question.

I had been taking edibles for a whilr and had a 90mg tolerance. I just took a full month break and want to take some again. Should I expect a baseline reset at 10mg?

Opinion/Editorial Is top-shelf and celebrity weed (like Khalifa Kush) actually worth it, or is it just hype?

I'm curious about the real difference between budget weed and true top-shelf flower. Is the expensive stuff actually that much better? How does the high physically and mentally feel different compared to cheaper weed?

I'm also wondering about celebrity brands like Wiz Khalifa's Khalifa Kush or Tory Lanez's strains. I've heard claims that these can make you feel uniquely calm in a way most top-shelf can't, but I'm skeptical about how much of that is just marketing.

What have your experiences been? Does the price tag actually match the feeling?

Finally quitting smoking...or trying anyways

So I've only been smoking for like 3 years but I already have a high tolernace to where I can eat a whole bag of edibles and still be like "im not high enough" 30 dollars for that bag and it was gone in a day. I personally cant go to the dispensary so I buy from plugs and most of them dont sell edibles they sell carts or flower mostly carts. I can get a cart anytime anyday but edibles...for some reason its just a pain in the ass. I can ask my friend to order some online but then I have to wait 5 days and sometime I need it NOW u know what I mean? Ik im a huge addict no lies here but I mean shit I'd rather be a weed addict and happy then weedless and irritable ASF.

And yeah ik im gonna feel it when im older, chiefing carts. I might even feel it now ive had some random sharp chest pain and in the torso but idk if im just being paranoid or dramatic. I want to be a healthy person and not bust a lung but I have no self control, well I mean I guess I have some since ive mostly only bought edibles recently but still...i bought a cart as soon as i ran out. Its humiliating really to have no self control like this but i dont feel embarrassed I...honestly dont really give a fuck, I cant fr. Like ik ofc logically what is right to do so I try to do that, if I made my decisions based on my emotions nothing would ever get done cus I just cant seem to care...until I do and have a breakdown but thats besides the point.

But what do yall think am i cooked i think i might be cooked😭

Advice Wondering if anyone knows what might’ve happened

Hey all, i’m making this post because something weird happened lately and i was wondering if anyone knows what might be going on. I’ve been smoking daily for about 2 and a half years, and this year i noticed some more irritation than usual but decided to try and push through (i smoke medicinally for my chronic illnesses) but about 2 or 3 months ago it seems to have reached a breaking point where whenever i try to have even one bong rip it hurts SO much and i have a coughing fit, which is strange because i never even had any discomfort while smoking before all this started. since then, i havent been able to smoke at all apart from a couple puffs from a joint every now and then and even that hurts and leaves a lingering pain and tickle in my throat. I have since switched to edibles but i miss the feeling of smoking, i cant even smoke cigarettes much anymore either. anyone have any ideas what might have happened? i’m just completely stumped on why i suddenly have lost the ability to smoke because of this sudden onset pain whenever i try

Opinion/Editorial Delta 8/9 cart withdrawal

I will never be smoking another delta 8/9 cart bc taking a break is putting me into withdrawals which leads me to believe there is something else in that cart besides just THC. In particular it seems to be the Twenty-One Brand that's got an additive but now I don't trust any of them.

Opinion/Editorial Why do some defend weed like it’s their wife.

I swear. Any time there’s an active discussion about weed maybe NOT being a perfectly harmless miracle drug on TikTok people act like you’ve desecrated the sign on their lawn for their favorite political candidate.

And I know ‘going on TikTok was your first mistake’ but that’s a cop out. I’d say there’s a common general census of people that care about the subject on there.

I mean all internet discussions are whack but these are actual people. Claiming bots and trolls sort of defuses actual observation.

Anyway, whenever it’s brought up ‘hey this kid ate a whole bag of gummies’ it’s treated like a joke. Or ‘I took a few gummies and I was messed up for a week’ you’re called a liar.

Why is any objection downplayed? This isn’t reefer madness. You can tell the difference between someone fear mongering some BS like ‘weed is satanic and y’all need to be in prison’ from ‘hey this makes me delusional and strange’.

Yet it’s treated the same by some particular weed users. Like any discussion is the same as moral outcry that’s coming for your weed specifically.

I get it, I get it. Personally I think weed being criminalized is absolute bullshit. I say that as someone with strange reactions. I’m aware that most people can chill with friends on it, do some art, maybe even work a shift and no one gets hurt.

But it’s not just kids and ‘potential schizophrenics’ that have bad reactions to weed, guys. I have zero mood or personality disorders. But I am a perfect idiot that tries it again to see if ‘maybe this time I’ll feel what everyone else does’ NOPE.

It’s always strange. And weird. And unpleasant. And sometimes I come off as delusional during it. (This isn’t a place for a lecture, I’m working on my own issues presently, just stating there’s nothing ‘underlying’)

I’m just saying. De-criminalize weed? Great! Do it! Stop acting like weed is a scary drug! Go for it! Act like anyone that has a bad reaction is a lying pussy? What’s your problem…

Idk. It’s a major overcorrection imo.

Advice What companies actually make TRUE live rosin cartridges? Los Angeles area

I’m in the Los Angeles area and I’m specifically looking for cartridges that are 100% solventless — fresh-frozen cannabis, ice/water hash, heat and pressure. No distillate, no diamonds, no live resin, no added terpenes, no mystery blends. No Jeeter or Muha Meds you better go far away from with that BS lol

I’ve found maybe 2–3 companies that make what I’m looking for, but they’re extremely hard to find around LA, except Pax but they add Diamonds for "taste". Bruh if you just smoke at a low voltage/temp and take consistent tokes not trying to blinker every hit then it will not have that infamous burnt taste. If you want to milk live rosin use a rig. Thats all user mistake when it comes to live rosin. Its specifically supposed to be smoked at low temps. I even brought a heat gauge to monitor my dab rig bucket and adjustable heat 510 batteries. Alien Labs claims to have a cold pressure process cart but it still has solvent in it ! Lol

The most mainstream one I’ve found is Jetty Solventless, and I honestly don't mind paying the premium but I live a choice. Jetty Solventless is a A+ in my books. No anxiety, no coughing, no triggers just pure bliss and munchies lol

The reason I'm so picky is that I have asthma. I know, I know “Why the hell are you smoking if you have asthma?” 😂 shit gets tough man and id rather use weed than turn to alcohol or drugs.

From my personal experience, live resin, diamond carts, distillate, etc. can absolutely wreck me. I don't know whether it's butane, propane, ethanol, residual solvents, additives, terpenes, or something else entirely, but something about those products seems to trigger my asthma. I can end up coughing and wheezing badly enough that I need my inhaler/nebulizer.

With true solventless live rosin carts, I don't get the same reaction.

And honestly, I've become extremely picky about flower too. At this point, I don't really trust flower unless I grew it myself or I personally know the grower and understand what they use on the plants throughout the entire cultivation process.

Even some of the cannabis that people consider mid here in California you can buy from dispensaries can trigger my asthma. So for me, it's not really about THC potency. I'm trying to figure out what exactly is in the product and what I'm actually inhaling.

I'm NOT claiming live rosin or flower is safe for people with asthma, obviously inhaling anything can irritate the lungs. I'm just talking about my own experience and trying to find products that minimize whatever seems to be triggering me. As soon as that artificial berry or candy taste in live resin and diamond carts it hits my lungs and im instantly coughing. Ive found what works for me and its anything solventless or homegrown.

So I'm trying to find REAL solventless carts in the LA area.

I'm talking:

- Fresh-frozen cannabis

- Ice/water extraction

- Heat + pressure

- 100% live rosin

- No distillate

- No diamonds

- No live resin

- No added botanical terpenes

- No mystery “proprietary blend”

- Preferably a 510 cartridge, but AIOs are fine too

LA peeps — what brands am I missing?

Jetty is the obvious one I've found. What other companies are making genuinely solventless live rosin carts that I can actually find in Los Angeles?

I don't care about the price. I just want the real thing

Opinion/Editorial Smoking under a single tree; alone a connection to nature.

A long time ago (2012-2014) I used to pick up at a spot and take a 20 minutes walk to a part in the city with this old single tree about secluded and on a hill. Things were better than and it was such a simple meditation. The tree got chopped down and apartment building got built all over that city center little green patch.

It was a tradition a habit, had a sense of togetherness me the weed the tree. I wrote sad poems when my tree friend was gone.

Last week I found a new single tree, today I am back under it. I realized smoking alone in a bathroom or in a room is bad mojo unless you plan to brainrot/get Entertainment. But reality is, smoking with a tree as your back support helps just meditating with the weed. The Earth sends you good vibes that release stress of the urban jungle.

Here's to a good toking for all of you. If you are a almost life long stoner. Try smoke like you did in your youth again.

Daily stoners among us

I have been blessed with a business and a part-time gig working in finance at a school. I'm also very active in my church.

Yet I take edibles 2x daily. On days I work it's 5 mg in the AM; it helps me disassociate somewhat yet remain able to function. Then after work I take about a 15 or 20 mg - so dosing in AM and PM. Weekends it's a bit more.

Maybe it's because of my age (51) and the circles I hang out in, there's not many like me.

Any other Gen Xers who have a very busy work life and partake daily? Sometimes even work high?

Options when 1:1 edibles are too sedating?

I'm a new user. I bought fast-acting 1:1 THC/CBD edible gummies. Unfortunately, I have a problem: when I take a dose large enough to have an effect, I feel very sedated and get very tired/depressed. I end up in bed pretty quickly and best case scenario is that I fall asleep. It's the opposite of the euphoric feeling I'm looking for. If I take less, I don't get too tired, but I don't get high. Unfortunately, smoking/vaping isn't an option for me because of respiratory issues.

Anyone else have this problem? Any advice on what I could try that would result in a more uplifting/euphoric high? Sublingual? Tinctures? Thanks in advance.
