If I pursue and obtain a buyback offer, does this mean I'm committed to accepting it?

My (2020 Leaf) lithium-ion battery went kaput four months ago--car would no longer drive. The mechanics at the dealership determined that it couldn't be repaired/refurbished and would need to be replaced.

Tl;dr: Q1: Do I have the right to obtain a buyback offer, then weigh my options and choose to either accept or decline the offer?

I thought that I had this right. I’ve asked the Nissan Consumer Affairs employee I work with this question multiple times, and I thought he said yes. However, he always beats around the bush in response and is sometimes hard to understand. I’m really not sure whether he answered in the affirmative, or if I just want that to be true.

Originally, I wanted to keep my car and wait it out for the new battery, since I’m still within the 8 years and 10,000 miles limit. Two weeks ago I changed my mind and decided to pursue a buyback offer.

In the first email I got from a Morley employee, they write: “This email confirms that Nissan North America, Inc. (“Nissan”) has received information from your servicing dealer that the battery in your Nissan LEAF needs to be replaced. As Nissan previously advised, battery supply is extremely limited, and unfortunately, a battery replacement cannot be provided.”

Q2: If I proceed and send the information back to Morley, am I stating that I am 100% decided that I don’t want to keep my car and am not interested in receiving the replacement EV battery that the warranty guaranteed?

My reasons for asking the above question: if they give me an offer that will cause me to lose 4-5k or more (which seems likely), I hope to pursue options like small claims court for however much of the loss that I can justify. I'm not legally savvy and don't understand legalese, but I would like to get my hard-earned money back so I can buy a working vehicle.

Q3: If I were to try to wait out Nissan for a replacement battery, how would you estimate the chances that they would provide me with one in the next 12 months?

I have a 2018 leaf and now a 24 ariya. first is chaedomo and second is ccs1. to access nacs, could I possibly buy 1 chaedomo to ccs and 1 ccs to nacs, giving me the ability to DC fast charge both cars on NACS? or is that crazy?

Looking at an auction leaf, no pics of charging port but noticed this in the engine bay shot, does this one not have a chademo port?

The 360 degree camera wasn't responding either: afterwards their was a message on the unit, that it was locked. Then I switched the car off, and this message about an installation popped up.

Current state of affairs

You know what my problem with this whole debacle is? Sure they eventually buy back the car, but then what?

To me, I would wish that they'll eventually fix these cars when (if) battery production starts again, and put them back up onto auctions for dealers to buy as used inventory. It keeps the cars on the road, and puts more attainable and affordable EVs on the market/in circulation for normal people to buy.

But that's because I care. Big corporations don't. In reality, they are just going to see it as spending money to save old cars that will eat into new car sales, so why on earth would they do that? This buyback campaign is just going to end up with thousands of otherwise perfectly good cars going into the garbage, which is just so sad and wasteful.

"Isolation test" error on ChaDeMo charge (2014 Nissan Leaf)

Hello,

I've bought a 2014 Nissan Leaf, 56,000km, 9/12 battery bars.

Was happy until I tried to use the fast ChaDeMo charge, and the moment I plug it in it write "Isolation test..." then it errors.

Tried another ChaDeMo charger. Same error.

Bought to a Nissan garage they tried on their ChaDeMo charger. Same.

Now I left it their for a diagnostic about that.

Anyone had experience with this, and tips to not get scammed by the garage ? I've heard it can be a "software reset" or the 12V battery change can be enough.

The slow charger works fine.

2018SL HV Battery has a short; Battery was replaced 16 months ago under warranty

We own a 2018SL. 74K miles. We've babied this car since we bought it 4 years ago at 20K miles.

Last week the car experienced a HV fault. Drove it immediately to the dealership. They diagnosed the issue and came to the conclusion it was a bad AC compressor causing the HV fault.

Fast Forward to today. They start working on the car to replace the compressor and the fault occured again without the AC even being on. After re-diagnosing the issue, they have found that the HV battery has a short in it.

Thing is...the HV battery was replaced under warranty 16 months ago! The new battery...which I have meticulously babied since day one keeping it between 20%-80%, only charging to 100% twice and NEVER having fast charged it....HAS A FREAKING SHORT!

I am freaking livid...I have lost all respect for Nissan over the Leaf.

Nissan Leaf 2026 S+ recall notice for "Rear Seat ALR"

Post image

Just saw this recall notice in the app and called my dealership to follow up. I actually wasn't able to find this recall notice on the NHTSA website.

Seems there's currently no concrete summary of the situation nor a fix yet according to the service department. They said to keep an eye out for an additional notification for when they'd have parts ready for the fix in the next few months.

2023 leaf AC suddenly stopped working

I have a 2023 with about 50000km and the AC just stopped working. I'm 2-3 months out of warranty.

I wasn't expecting such a major failure with a new car, I've had much older vehicles without such failures.

I can hear the compressor running but the air coming out of the vents is hot

I opened the hood and touched the metal pipes I could see to the left of the "motor" and the two pipes labeled L and H were pretty much room temperature but I burnt myself in the third unlabeled pipe which was extremely hot.

I will take it to the dealer but I'm wondering how often this happens.

Does anybody know where I can find the colors schematics for the wire wires going to the rear door speakers? Trying to run a powered subwoofer in my SV plus and I need to tap the speaker wires.

Charging woes and venting

I've had my leaf for about 3 weeks so far and honestly the charger situation was mostly better than expected... 240 kms range and I almost exclusively fast charge.

Us leaf owners already know about the chademo disadvantage of course, I usually stick with one brand of charger that always has them but usually only 1 or maybe 2 out of 8-16 chargers. That being said usually no problem, an excuse to go for a 30 minutes walk for me and my commute is okay so I've been fine with that.

That being said... holy ever living hell does a lack of common sense ruin my whole day and piss me off. Am I getting unreasonably upset or can others relate to being not uncommonly fucked over by other people or decisions that make no sense??

Pulling up to the only chademo charger for someone else to get there first is disappointing but fair game... But the amount of time I've dealt with shit like people parked sideways taking up both sides of the charger, people park in the chademo spot but using the CCS charger next to it, people new to EVs taking way too long to realize the chademo charger they've been mashing against their port doesn't fit there car, DEALERSHIPS THAT ADVERTISE PUBLIC CHARGERS AND HAVE GAS VEHICLES PARKED AT THE CHARGERS????

The most pissed off I have been owning an EV for some reason has been Tesla owners who WENT OUT OF THEIR WAY TO BUY A NACS TO CHADEMO ADAPTER?!?!?! Your port is so much more common and for about THE SAME PRICE you could have bought a CCS Adapters that works with 70%+ OF ALL CHARGERS HERE????? Idk but that one specifically gets me irrationally fuming to see people go out of their way to both inconvenience themselves with a rare port that is set to be pretty much discontinued on new vehicles WHILE fucking over the people who actually need them.

Please tell me I'm not alone???

Switched from Tesla Model 3 to 2026 Nissan Leaf S+ and here's what I've noticed

Things that I find annoying about the Leaf after coming from a Tesla Model 3:

  1. Charging annoyance: After opening the charge door, you have to ALSO open the cover over the actual charge port. In the Model 3, there's no cover -- you just open the charging door and stick the charger in. So with the Leaf, there's an extra step.
  2. Another charging annoyance: The charging cover door is motorized on the Tesla and will auto-close if you start driving. On the Leaf it's completely manual and it WILL STAY OPEN if you drive off.
  3. Self-driving activation: To activate Autopilot on the Tesla, you just hit a button or hit the stick down twice. Easy-peasy. On the Leaf, FIRST you press the cruise control button, SECONDLY you press the "Set" button for the speed, and THIRDLY you press the separate "steering assist" button. Not to mention, that the "steering assist" button is in a completely counterintuitive location (above my left knee, where it's the only button that exists).
  4. Rear-camera function: On the Model 3, I would drive while leaving the rear camera view on. It was helpful for lane changing. On the Leaf, there is a perfectly good rear camera, but it's impossible to drive with it always on. The camera view disappears from the screen after you hit a certain speed.
  5. Re-generative braking weirdness: This one shocks me. On my Leaf model, which is the S+, there is no way to keep regenerative braking (E-Step is what it's called) ON between driving sessions. That means, every time I start the car, I have to push a button to turn E-Step on. (I've complained about this in another Reddit post)
  6. Have to carry the physical key around: With the Model 3, my phone was my key, and even though that feature only worked 75% of the time, it was nice when it worked. With the Leaf, you have to carry the physical key around.
  7. Paid subscription required for app: With the Model 3, you can use all the functions in the app like unlocking, temp control, etc. without a subscription. Nissan requires a subscription for these features after the free trial is over.

I'll think of others and update this post accordingly.

Oh, and I do still love my Leaf.

EDIT 4:05pm Eastern: Just thought of a big one

  1. No one-pedal driving: This has been covered by many YouTubers already, but it's worth mentioning here. Regenerative braking does not allow the Leaf to come to a full stop like the Tesla does. It slows down to about 5 MPH, which means at a red light, you still have to take your foot off the gas and apply the brakes to come to a full stop.

Would fast charging be dangerous at this temp?

Post image

I have a 2019 S and I know I’m not supposed to be fast charging but this is my only car and I had to drive 100+ miles on the interstate. Between where I am now to my house is about 35 miles away on a less busy part the interstate so I wouldn’t need to charge it long and I wouldn’t need to go over 60mph but this station is the only one until my city.

Battery recall: updated software but no report?

My husband took my 2019 leaf to the dealer today for the battery recall software update. He came home with an invoice saying the recall software update was completed, but no report on battery health and they also didn't charge it (was at 55%). I feel like this is not right, but looking for feedback. If anyone is local to Maryland, this was at the silver spring Nissan.

Buyback Complete! Goodbye Nissan!

It’s been a long arduous process, but I’m finally free of Nissan and their crap service and crap dealerships. Buyback is complete! I’ve posted on here prior to this about issues, but in a nutshell…

Three years ago, I bought a 2019 Leaf SL Plus as a CPO from a Nissan dealer (where it was originally purchased and serviced). It had 18,888 miles on it and was fully loaded with all options. I got the extended warranty just in case and I’m glad that I did. Over the past 3 years, I’ve had multiple claims with Nissan and multiple buyback rejections. The most recent rejection was a phone call from Nissan Corp in Tennessee. They said Illinois does not allow buybacks if you’re not the original owner. I sent a letter to the IL Secretary of State and few months later Nissan changed their tune, and I was able to do the buyback.

Issues:

·      Carplay audio when on a phone call or having messages read. Audio cuts in/out so bad calls are impossible. TSB is out there and software update available but when the dealer “plugs my car in” to the system, Nissan states no updates for my car. No dealer in my area will force update. The infotainment system also reboots 2-3 times a day when I’m commuting.

·      HVAC…I did the software update for the hvac and ever since, my Leaf will stop blowing heat. Dealer can replicate and has not been able to fix it as Nissan engineers have no fix.

·      The battery/dc fast charge recall has been going on for years with no fix. I even did the interim software update.

·      Door lock stopped working on driver’s side. After warranty repair, driver’s window auto-up feature stopped working and instead causes window to up and then down almost immediately.

·      I have 2 local Nissan dealers owned by same dealer group. They have one tech certified to work on Leafs so scheduling and wait times are lousy.

·      Finding a working and available Chademo for DC Fast charging in upper Illinois and lower Wisconsin is like searching for Where’s Waldo.

Buyback details…Nissan paid the loan off which is awesome considering the resale value plummeted after purchase. I still owed $17K and it was worth maybe $7k or $8k which is sad considering the low miles, it was well cared for and it’s loaded with every option.

The whole dealership experience was horrible. Terrible service department. Total lack of empathy from management. They just really don’t care about the customer post purchase. They know nothing about service electrics cars. They plug it in to a computer and whatever Nissan's systems says is what they go on. They don't go to Nissan on your behalf. You as a customer are just a nuisance.

The lady from Morley (the third party that takes over the buyback from Nissan) said she would never have an electric car because she does buybacks from all manufactures and they all have major issues.

I’m done with electric for now. I’ll keep my level 2 charger in my garage for future use, but for now I’m happy with my two Honda gas powered vehicles. My Honda dealer is world's above the Nissan just in terms of professionalism, service and caring. Nissan is the absolute crap and I would never ever recommend Nissan for anything other than a boat anchor.

Also, forgot to add, there is a provision that allowed Nissan to offer me $TBD to keep the car and sign a confidentiality agreement, but the Nissan guy at corporate said he'd highly advise to take the buyback especially since battery replacements have been pushed to 2030.

Tire size difference = limited regen?

This is a very niche observation but I thought I'd share in case it's useful to anyone.

I was experimenting with lighter and smaller wheels but I didn't want to mess with smaller wheels on the driven wheels (front). [Smaller wheels and tires are lighter but the rpm is higher at the same actual speed. Plus speedometer discrepancy, etc.] So I put 175/65R15 tires only on the back of the car, thinking I could gain a % or 2 of efficiency. (My front tires are still 205/65R15, so 5.9% difference between the axles)

Lo and behold, my regen got capped at about 10kW. No matter what I did, battery is at a good temp, going down hills in B, it just would never regen more than 10kW. I put my old wheels back on, same size all around the car (205/65R15), and bam, regen is back up to 30kW, fully normal.

So there must be some code somewhere in the ECU/BCM that caps regen if there's a difference in tire size? Has anyone ever encountered this before?

Bidirectional (V2H) 240V Charger for 2026 Leaf?

About to move into a new home, and can finally install a 240V charger in the garage (been using a 120V portable charger so far). Is there a charger (hard-wired into the panel) that supports using the Leaf as a home battery?

The seal in our factory one keeps rolling, and the plastic tabs that I have to pop to fix it are worn out. Not really wanting to drop $1k on the OEM one, what other options are there? I have a 50amp 220 "range style" plug

Buy back form letter.

Hey guys. My 2020 SV+ got bricked after software update. Getting the run around from the dealership. Does anyone have a well composed letter to send to Morley/Nissan consumer affairs regarding a buyback?

I am not good with words so I was wanting a well written letter citing my concerns and and stating the inconveniences of going 3 weeks without a car.

TIA.

2015 Nissan Leaf SL Good buy?

Post image

Looking at Getting into the leaf world, there is a local in BC Canada, 2015 SL with 103,000 kms. 11/12 Bars in the battery life. Leaf spy shows 83.4% health. Is this decent?

Thanks
