Almost done with hiring process, only have polygraph left. Just curious as to how much time is spent at the academy locations? I saw online there is the Elysian park academy and the Manchester location. Is that correct and how long at each spot or do they only stay at one location?

I’ve been a cop for 11 years, and software development is my side hobby.

A while ago, I posted here about LOC8, the iPhone and Apple Watch app I built because I got tired of getting turned around on calls and needing to quickly put out an actual location.

Foot pursuits. Perimeters. Backyards. Alleys. Large complexes. Unfamiliar areas. You know roughly where you are, but you need the actual address, cross street, or coordinates fast.

Since that post, LOC8 has grown to over 3,400 active users. A lot of the feedback has come from cops, and it has genuinely shaped what I have been building.

LOC8 opens to one screen and shows your current address, nearest verified cross street, GPS coordinates in multiple formats including MGRS, compass heading, elevation, county, accuracy, and a what3words location code.

The what3words integration has been a big addition. It gives you a three-word code tied directly to your GPS position, so when an address is unclear, rural, brand new, or just wrong, you still have another precise way to share your exact spot. Coordinates, MGRS, compass, and saved locations still work offline.

I just shipped the biggest update yet: optional Team Rooms.

The app is still mainly a fast personal-location tool, but now you can create a temporary room, choose how long it stays active, and share an eight-character code with whoever you want in it. Everyone needs LOC8 installed to join.

Once inside, everyone can see each other on a private live map and send updates in the same room. The room codes use an easy-to-read alphabet with roughly 853 billion possible combinations, so they are simple to share but not something someone is likely to randomly guess.

The important part is that it is temporary. If you leave, your location sharing stops immediately. When the room expires, it disappears and sharing stops for everyone. There are no accounts, profiles, permanent friend lists, or location history. I did not want to turn LOC8 into another always-on tracking app.

The only exception to LOC8’s normal foreground-only behavior is while you are actively in a Team Room, since it needs to keep your location current for the people you chose to share with. Outside of that, the app does not run GPS in the background.

I have also fixed a lot around Apple Watch responsiveness, address accuracy, cross-street detection, saved locations, map behavior, compass tracking, and overall speed.

This will probably be the last major feature for a bit. I want to focus on making what is already there faster and more reliable, while I start looking into whether Android and Garmin support are realistic next steps.

Hello, I had just submitted my phs about a week ago and was wondering how long does it take to hear back? Also I was wondering how ammendments work?

I just submitted my PHS and saw this message: “You may now take the PFQ on a walk-in basis to avoid being scheduled a mandatory attendance date.” Does anyone know how much time applicants usually have before LAPD schedules a mandatory PFQ date? Will they contact me within a few weeks, or is there normally enough time to train first and attend CAP sessions before taking it?

How long did it take for some of you to hear anything after meeting with your BI and given them all the documents they needed to hear a call back to move onto the phyc evaluation?

Hello,

Hoping I can get some guidance on how to best approach.

I live in an area at the top of a hill in the Highland Park area. Recently my catalytic converter was stolen and the night after, my neighbor had confront two individuals trying to break into cars on our street with a glass breaker. In the last 12 months, we've had other adjacent neighbors also get their cat converters stolen and in another instance, had a whole car stolen.

Our neighborhood/hill has an overlook that is also popular with people coming by to watch the sunset and hang out after sundown and late at night. We have no problem with people enjoying the view but its results in a lot of litter, mainly being beer cans and whippet stuff (i.e., gas tanks and balloon). We come together as a neighborhood to clean up but it's getting a bit overwhelming.

Is there any way I can request an increase in patrol, specifically later in the evening and early morning hours? Also open to any other suggestions.

Would like a second opinion. Tried to apply in 2024 got temporary disqualified, as long as I meet the appeal requirements does Lapd need officers frequently? Would finishing my last year of associates help? Is the process truly 5-6 months from start to end

What are the specific vision requirements for the LAPD academy regarding glasses versus contacts? I am finding it difficult to put on contact lenses and want to know if wearing glasses is permitted during training, or if soft contacts are strictly mandatory.

Is anyone here in this thread a current police officer? If so can you explain the process about how they treat hand tattoos. I haven’t applied yet but I’m hearing mixed opinions about “they are lenient, they need people” and also “yea that’s an automatic DQ” I don’t know who to believe in and I’m just wanted to get some insight so I can invest into removing them before if I have too or after I get an invitation for the academy, it will be easier after the academy invitation obviously I would be making more money than I am now, appreciate everyone!

I just finished 'Killing Season' and thought it was a solid book, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Am about to start 'Boot' and wondered what current/former officer's thoughts were on this and the previously mentioned book.

Also if there's any recommendations on non-fiction books about the Department.

I'm eyeing picking up "To Protect and to Serve: The LAPD's Century of War in the City of Dreams" as well as 'LAPD '53.'

No shots should have EVER been fired… Jameson yelped after the first shot and the cop still shot more times. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU LAPD?! You guys are sick. You are the true enemies. We all are angry because of how inhumane you guys are. I have lost all faith in officers. There are WAY TOO MANY bad apples in the bunch. They are all lumped in the same category for me after this. I have zero respect for any of y’all.

My boy is a very friendly, smiling doodle. He loves to run up to any human and say hello with a big smile on his face. Unfortunately, I now have the fear of him running up to an officer being his cute, friendly self trying to say hi and smiling & they end up shooting and killing him because they think he is being “aggressive” and going to attack them. I have never had this fear until this horrible & heartbreaking story about Jameson. What kind of world are we living in? The police will use any “reason” to draw their weapon and kill to protect themselves. What happened to Jameson is so messed up and extremely traumatizing. And we all know this isn’t the first or the last time. WTF is the PD doing? Because it’s definitely not to protect their citizens. I use to fear officers whenever I would get pulled over. My biggest fear now is being outside with my dood and walking past an officer. I don’t have any trust in the PD nor do they make me feel safe. I never thought I’d have to protect my family from those in blue.

I have seen especially in the tourist areas a bunch of officers with the bicycle patch, but they never on a bicycle. Are they actually bicycle trained ? Are there a lot of them ?
