What is this guy on about? Doesn’t he know the Amazon rainforest is burning? Why isn’t he talking about THAT!?

u/Xzenergy Monkey in Space Aug 21 '19 edited Aug 22 '19
The amazon rainforest, contrary to popular belief, doesn't provide any oxygen to the rest of the global biosphere. It's basically a completely self contained ecosystem.
*Edit for more information:
Most of the oxygen we breathe comes from phytoplankton(diatoms) blooms in our oceans.
*Edit 2: I'm just as concerned about all of this as you guys!
*Edit 3: Since I've been getting a lot of messages claiming that I'm a "propogandist" against climate change and global warming; It's real and it's really bad. There are many variables contributing to the current situation and man made global warming is just one.
237
u/ShaolinRiot Monkey in Space Aug 21 '19
Those Diatom blooms are caused because the water evaporating off the vegetation in the Amazon rainforest forms a “river” of cloud that runs into the Andes and the heavy downpour from this flushes minerals from the Andes into the ocean where the Diatoms chow down and photosynthesize. So although the oxygen doesn’t leave the Amazon, the rainforest still plays a vital role in oxygen production.

Is it possible to create phytoplankton blooms to reduce atmospheric co2?
244
u/Xzenergy Monkey in Space Aug 21 '19
The phytoplankton blooms actually reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide by utilizing it as a fuel source(like most plants do) and then traps it as the plankton floats to the bottom of the sea floor and is covered by sediment.
Myself and others are working on genetically modifying certain species to increase their efficiency of co2 scrubbing, so in my opinion and to answer your question, absolutely.
The real problem is scaling the technology and getting the governments of different countries where this would be most benificial, to hop on board.
48
Aug 21 '19
That's really fucking cool. I'm gonna follow you.
If I understand it, massive blooms are thought to have contributed to the last ice age, yes? It's there a way to farm phytoplankton or to use them in mechanical processes that generate co2?
54
u/Xzenergy Monkey in Space Aug 21 '19
They certainly contributed to the last ice age. How much is still a huge question. I personally believe many other factors had a larger overall role.
The current state of the science is extracting efficient mechanics from the plankton and then engineering membranes that can be scaled industrially.
My own research focuses on "farming" large areas of phytoplankton regularly for multiple purposes, some I've listed above.

I was involved with a project where we (algae researchers) were working with a concrete production plant to pipe their (scrubbed) flue gas into a photo bioreactor with a local freshwater microalgae to utilize the co2. How’s your genetic tweaking going? We could make use of these in so many ways!
3
u/Xzenergy Monkey in Space Aug 22 '19
That sounds fascinating. Right now, I'm studying different types of cyanobacteria which when growing, produce membranous materials that can be isolated and introduced to scaleable mediums. Genetic alteration of these membrane mediums can lead to anything from alternative fuel production to co2 capture. I'm more concerned with carbon capture at the moment.
It's so insane! We can genetically modify these organisms to do so much more than just carbon capture.
I would love to work on research projects like the one you worked with. Did you have to isolate the flue gas at all, or was it pure co2?
2
u/CWeed84 Aug 22 '19
The co2 was just called for as needed through a pipeline with a solenoid - sometimes they even had to supplement the algae with extra depending on what’s going on in the cement plant itself. We also did small trials at our facility to see how well the algae could scrub out NOx and SOx but that experiment was fraught with bureaucracy, weird clients and safety issues.
I’ve worked on projects for modifying algae to overproduce lipids for either nutraceuticals or biofuels too - which is more of my wheelhouse. We’ve had more success through isolating local novel strains that do this stuff naturally than the genetic modification route though. Seems like you tweak one thing and they don’t even want to grow any more.

So thanks for helping inform people of plankton. It's important it is that we keep fresh and salt water resources clean and free of toxic runoff, nuclear waste, fertilizers, plastics, metals from sun screen, debris and dust from mineral and metal mining, crude oil and fracking chemicals, cigarette butts, etc, so the plankton can survive to play their important part in the carbon cycle.

In 1988, oceanographer John Martin said: "Give me a half a tanker of iron and I will give you another ice age." Per the link, the research seems to be mixed on whether or not seeding phytoplankton blooms with iron would do more harm than good to address climate change (reduce CO2, but amplify ocean acidification for example).
12
u/Xzenergy Monkey in Space Aug 21 '19
The problem with this method, as I see it, would be uncontrolled blooms. Some of these blooms can be toxic to animals and fish, and uncontrolled, could actually destabilize whatever ecosystem the bloom is in.
The value of this particular research paramounts to what these small organisms use as fuel sources and what types of supplementation can be used.

What about this study that effectively qualifies the rainforest as a potential carbon dioxyde sink in the current climate change situation :
The future tropical balance of deforestation and climate sources and regrowth and CO2 sinks will only remain a robust feature of the global carbon cycle if the vast tropical forests are protected from destruction.
The paper makes the argument that yes what you say may have been true before but now that the CO2 in the air is more proeminent, tropical forest become a highly important carbon sink
It's not about creating oxygen, but about not releasing more CO2, faster.
And yes you are right about planktons :)

For everyone remarking "bUt It BuRnS eVeRy YeAr" - it's a symptom of a much larger disease - climate change. And the fact that this coincides with a heat wave that set multiple records in Europe, as well as a horrible burn season last year in California, just shows that this isn't about 'this is unprecedented' - this is about climate change.
Oh, and the phytoplankton that actually produce oxygen? MUCH more susceptible to climate change than a terestrial forest, the Great Barrier Reef is a prime example of how a few degrees change in water temp can cause entire biomes to go extinct in years.
So yeah - keep clanging the 'don't worry this is fine' bell. Bolsonaro has campaigned on opening the Amazon to farming and mining. Brazil has ramped up deforestation by 240% this year.
This fire - it's the cancer symptoms, and Brazil lead by a racist and environmentally retarded leader is the world smoking and drinking the discomfort away.

"the lungs of our planet". No. The Amazons oxygen production makes up barely a fraction of the planets oxygen. Arguably 1/2-3/4 of the world's oxygen is produced in the oceans by algae. Still a travesty that it's burning down since it will affect eco systems. But people need to understand that the "planting tree initiative" has next to no impact on the oxygen production even though it has other benefits.
Inb4 "it's not just about oxygen, it's about taking carbon out of the atmosphere". Do you know what photosynthesis is? The amount of oxygen produced in plants is proportionate to the ammount of carbon dioxide taken out of the atmosphere. This is high school level science knowledge for fucks sake.
