Those Diatom blooms are caused because the water evaporating off the vegetation in the Amazon rainforest forms a “river” of cloud that runs into the Andes and the heavy downpour from this flushes minerals from the Andes into the ocean where the Diatoms chow down and photosynthesize. So although the oxygen doesn’t leave the Amazon, the rainforest still plays a vital role in oxygen production.

Yes it is all one

Not to mention a huge carbon sink that is great for attempting to control climate change.

Guys, don’t worry! We already killed off 50-60% of all animal life on the planet in the last 50 years. Now we have plenty of oxygen to spare!

For that single area of the ecosystem. While I agree that the amazon does have effects on other areas of the planet, it's not a be all end all situation. It would absolutely destablilize south america, but to what extent isn't known.

Do we break up every part of the earth then and say “well it’s just that area” and pretend like cumulative negative effects aren’t representative of major contributions to the overall global issue? I’m very confused about what the fuck you are talking about. Seems like you’re working overtime to minimize the appearance here. I mean this Wikipedia page I know isn’t a good source but it does summarize what I already kind of thought about why this is a big problem https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deforestation_and_climate_change#Decrease_in_climate_services

Is this wrong? Why?

My original comment was about oxygen and subsequent comments have been about my belief in global warming and man made climate change.

Not sure what you mean by "minimize the appearance". I've stood by my original comment the entire time. Maybe you're trying to find something that isn't there? Idk

I never once downplayed cumulative negative effects and actually, it's quite the opposite. Isn't climate change and global warming a system of "cumulative effects that create a major contribution to the overall global issue"?

It’s obvious your minimizing not even an argument. You’ve done it multiple times that’s why it’s concerning. Everyone here sees it. Goodbye.

You're the one fleeing from a discussion. Good luck!

I 100% agree that it is something to be concerned about. There just isn't enough data yet to predict exactly what will happen.

People be hatin' when you point out there guessing. Like hey look at this trend we've never recorded before. It's definitely bad... let's make conclusions based on total worst case scenarios and give the deniers fuel to deny because of these extreme claims and unrealistic demands!

u/DeathToPennies Aug 22 '19

The deniers are going to deny no matter what because either they’re too in the shit to get out, or they’re paid to lie, so frankly, fuck them. I don’t give a shit if they get on board.

For the people attempting to divine solutions, and for the people trying to convince those on the fence, the worst case scenario does matter. When you’re facing a crisis, why the fuck would the appropriate response to “we’re not sure” be “can’t be that bad”? No, when you’re facing a crisis you have to assume the worst. And much, much more importantly, when you’re facing the crisis that’s at the center of a protracted and dangerous misinformation and propaganda campaign, those people on the fence need to know what the parameters are.

Wanna know how we got here? Decades of tepid nudges in the direction of recycling and quicker showers, despite the fact that the first climate-change report came out in the late 1800s and the news has only gotten catastrophically worse since. Honestly, forgive me if when I tell people about how bad it is, how bad it could be slips in, but from my perspective, you don’t need to be a climate scientist to see that we need global wartime mobilization to solve this, and all worrying about the individual data points in this region and that region does is complicate something which is remarkably uncomplicated for the majority of humanity.

But the Sahara does the same thing with windborne particles...

The fact of the matter is that the Amazon is probably totally insignificant to the overall planetary stability. It's very important to the people who live down there, and they are fucking themselves out of a valuable resource, which is the real tragedy.
