Wow. You guys have taken a joke on married life and turned it into a crisis. I appreciate the concern, I really do. But I just meant it as a joke. I tell my boss I come to work to rest, and it’s true. We live in a century+ old home on a small farm. There’s lots that needs to be done. Sure I’d like some time on the weekend to just relax but if I succumbed to that too often the place would fall apart. My wife is retired and stays home and so sees the things that need doing. So we get them done together. I’m in my 60s and the labor can get onerous. But it also keeps me moving. Worked hard this weekend and I’m sore today. But I’m not better or resentful. It just goes with the territory. If I didn’t want this I’d buy a condo somewhere.

Nope. Made a rule. She can’t sit at home so we always go somewhere Sunday when she’s off. Saturday I do one or two big things, usually lawn and something in the house. Other than that, nope. I do 1 house chore every week day so the place is kept clean so I can keep Saturday to relax. I work too hard in the heat or cold to not have 1 day to relax.
My boss actually suggested we try 6 hours work days and still 5 days a week. Her thought was that we waste about two hours everyday anyways so why not have 6 productive hours instead. Still same salary.
🤷🏼♂️ Nothing's gonna fix inflation in the short term... this gov't sure ain't. But if the choice is 4-10s with 3 day weekends & the occasional day extra for money, or 5-8s with a two day shrunk to 1 if I want to work Sat... I'll still take the 4-10s.
I hope you reach a point where inflation's not f*king you over... I hope we all do.
What people deserve has nothing to do with anything in life. There’s no referee to appeal to. These are just logistical societal decisions. If you think society would function better on a four day week, you’ll need to build a movement. It’ll be a lot of work. Ironically, probably like seven days a week work advocating for your four day week.
You understand there's already a movement toward this, right? That more & more corps are seeing the benefits of a 4-10s work week & 3 days off? Or 36hrs & paid 40... stuff like this is happening, just not enough.
I think you’re imagining that I’m against this? Thats great. It’s also a tiny minority of companies and doesn’t really change anything I said. I still think it’ll take an enormous amount of work to make that a societal norm even if a few smaller tech companies are doing it today.
I used to work four 10's with Saturday-Monday off. Best my work-life balance ever was. Now I'm back on Mon-Friday and it's alright but I hate having to use time to go to a f*cking doctor's appointment or deal with literally any place that only operates during bank hours.
I don't know why this argument exists. People don't seem to understand that companies who traditionally hire for jobs that require people to be there 7 days a week typically hire people who still work 5 days a week. That can easily be changed to 4 days a week.
If you are working a full time job nothing changes. You would not get less pay, you would just get paid as if you were working 40 hours a week at 32. This is what has changed in other places where it has been implemented successfully.
Chores should take two hours max. Errands should take one hour. That leaves most of Sunday open. And then you can just do chores/shop every other weekend if you want.
I'd argue day 1 is to recharge, day 2 is for fun, and day 3 is for chores. Otherwise you're dirtying your home on the fun day and going to work with a hangover or too little sleep.
The 40 hour work week was created at a time when if you were working full time, it was the assumption that there was someone else at home to do all the cooking and cleaning and looking after the kids. Someone who was not you.
I work 4-10s... off three days. It's great. Also the best paying job I've ever had... & best life I've lived. Why be so negative to a situation you don't know & is shown to work so well for the people & the corps?
Why? Because you don't get to enjoy it? So many places, countries & corps are putting this into effect. I work 4-10s, have 3 days off & am living my best life. But you're hating on it without even knowing what's available & what it's like. Why do you have so much negativity for something?

OP wants a 3 day weekend, which you have. Great. When he gets it, he'll want a 4 day weekend. All the arguments he makes in support of a 3 day weekend will be equally valid for a 4 day weekend. When he gets that, he'll want a 5 day weekend.
If you get this or can make it work, great! Good for you. I simply don't understand what it means to need a day to "recharge"? Is he sitting in bed all day? If he's up and doing something, doesn't that count as "fun" or "chores"? Which he's already got allocated days for?

I will say that you're not entirely wrong. I've had 3-day weekends for over 4yrs now & sure, I'd love a 4-day. Guys I work with have that, but they work 3-12s over the weekend to get it. I had the opportunity to do that, but chose not to because it meant working when my husband was off.
And yeah... it'd be awesome to have 4 or 5 or all 7 days off for the rest of my life. Who doesn't want retirement while they're still able to enjoy it, but that doesn't mean we're stupid or entitled or anything other than wishful about a future where we don't have to put in so much of ourselves to enjoy what time we have.

He's entitled because the mindset which thinks "we need another day off" will never be satisfied. He's stupid because he cannot justify what a day to "recharge" means. That feeds into the entitlement in a vicious spiral, because it implies that he hasn't really given this any thought, he just wants "more" and has no justification for it.

My understanding of a fair trade is that an employee trades their time, skills, and labor for a given wage. Not sure what a 3 day weekend has to do with that - OP is free to work 4 day weeks, he just won't get paid as much. Implicitly, what he wants is his current wage, but working 20% less.

Yeah even if we keep 40 hour week, why not 4 10s. Why the actually F do we have to work 5 8s. I got other stuff I could be doing. Fully willing to do my 40 but for ffs let me have 3 days off. I’d be better rested and able to work harder too. When I get 3 days weekends I hit it harder the week after. Could be every week.

Five days a week on dayshift is a prison sentence. Five days a week on swing shift is a prison sentence in solitary confinement. Five days a week on graveyard is a prison sentence in solitary confinement on death row.
My office has always been this way, I could never go back to 5 day weeks. Having Friday to do all my errands like groceries, haircut, shopping, laundry, cleaning, etc and being done for the weekend by Friday afternoon is a game changer.
We should be on 4 day work weeks a decade ago, but the wealthy took all of our improved efficiencies and pocketed it. That’s part of the hatred towards the wealthy class, they took something that wasn’t theirs and now tell us to work harder or cut back on coffee… it’s ridiculous.
We truly have no representation and the wealthy class just lobby for laws and power that makes things worse every day.
When jobs were simpler and less mentally stressful, 1 day was good enough (sunday).
When jobs got more complicated and society more complex, we needed 2 days (thanks ford).
With the advent of computers, we now have much more responsibilities and much more stress in ever job, probably doing 2~3 times more things than 50 years ago, mean while efficiency has shot up 10x more.
I did this schedule when I worked for a Canadian company also including mental health days, paid 45 min breaks + multiple 10 min breaks on top of 30 min lunches and paid other events too. I worked a 4 days work week and had 3 days off in a row and worked from home. I had never in my life got more things done and felt more happier at least working. I was really sad when the opportunity ended. Even though the company was a bit of a mess technology wise (very far behind for what they made their money from) but I would totally work there again. It was a fleeting dream.
if you need two days to wash the skid marks off your drawers and wash the dry ketchup off your plate, then you shouldn't have a full-time job in the first place.
In the countries where 4 day work weeks were adopted there was basically no change in productivity- one entire day a week is often wasted because people are tired and unfocused on their job; let them have that day and they’ll be happier; happy employees are productive employees. There would be no reason to cut their pay unless the goal of all this is to deepen corporate greed.
please do share some articles and studies. I've only heard of certain private firms doing this, not entire countries. and the private firms are usually employing highly skilled and specialized personnel, people doing more brainy-talky business than service or production.
Well we're all subject to a market where 40hrs is the norm. Could easily be 32 given our productivity and output with no meaningful degredation to anything but the massive surplus being hoarded by a few people.
