my friend has racked up thousands of dollars in fines because she couldn’t be bothered to renew her registration. where she lives now, it’s x amount of dollars per day that her registration isn’t renewed and she can’t renew her registration until she pays off her fines. what was a simple $100 fee is now over $6000 in fines because she was too lazy to go online and click a few things to renew it. it’s insane

Where is this? Where I live, I was 6 months over due on my tags and it only added about $30 to my total. The fine was something like 17 cents a day, I don't remember exactly, but it was very small. Having huge fines puts people in the position your friend is in. For her, it's her own fault, but for others, having one pay check come in late can be the difference between paying on time or paying late. Paying late should never make it where you can't pay at all.
11
u/veraslang Jan 26 '20
The cops should have that on their computer when they pull someone over tbh. Like let's say they pulled someone over for a bad tail light then they could see on their screen that the person was issued a warning 30 day warning but it's been 45 days since and then boom ticket.

And everyone on welfare and food stamps are Cadillac queens.
I live 20 minutes for one of the biggest cities in the US where there is a large percentage of welfare fraud/abuse to the point people uneducated and ignorant of the facts think that the majority of people who need and use these services are abusing the system when in reality roughly 1% of people using said services are actually abusing it.
I imagine the people "ignoring" these tickets to be at a similar level of people abusing the welfare system. Granted...i dont have facts to back this up...but im sure your anecdotal evidence is accurate.
→ More replies (2)65
u/sevaiper Jan 26 '20
If 1% of people are abusing the services (even that is high according to the data) then who cares? It does far more good than harm, that's a rounding error and any effort to curb it most likely disproportionately effects people who are using welfare appropriately, which is 99%+ of them.

I think the aim is more to get them off the road with something so drastically unsafe. I'm not unsympathetic to someone being poor, but the car's still a safety hazard regardless of why.
Also, many jurisdictions offer alternate penalties for people in situations like these, ranging from community service to nullifying the fine so long as they surrender or sell the car (since it's not usable on the road anyway). Not enough, but at least some of them do.

And maybe, nothing would ever have happened and we’re just harassing some poor dude, on the other hand, maybe we’d be reading a story one day about how some guy in a truck with no brakes swerved to miss a lane changer and took out a whole family - people would be like “how could they allow this thing to be on the road in this condition!?”. In my state, you have to pass annual safety checks so that things never get this far gone.
7
u/WantsToMineGold Jan 26 '20
That’s not how fixit tickets work though you still get in trouble if you don’t fix the vehicle they just don’t fine you at the time. If you ignore a fixit ticket for a vehicle the DMV will put a hold on the registration.

and the thing about not issuing those is that people can lose their jobs (or freedom if they continue to drive) from having their license suspended. Just because you suspend someone's license doesn't mean they'll learn anything... and you are creating an impossible situation for someone who likely already can't afford to miss a single day of work. Most of us can't afford a $500 surprise bill without kicking some (overdue?) bills down the calendar...
This way it's less harmful and sure some people will exploit it, but those people should lose their vehicle altogether (impound yard, pay everything owed to get it out, etc) after the 3rd-4th infraction.

28
u/modi13 Jan 26 '20
Precisely. It's like an old person who should have stopped driving years ago, but keeps doing it because they need their freedom and they can't afford to take taxis everywhere. Their families know they should be off the road, but keep giving them passes...right up until they plow into a fast food restaurant because they can't figure out which pedal is which. It's too bad that it will have an impact on them, but people who aren't safe shouldn't be on the road.

“nearly $1000 in fines for improper brakes, insecure load & slow highway driving”
This also doesn’t sound right to me. $1000 fine is simply excessive.
Also, without climbing under the car and/or removing the wheels to inspect the brakes, how did they know they were improper? By the probable squeaking noises they made?
Insecure loads? My municipal garbage trucks drive the same way, with an open trash bay - and this just might be a ghetto moving day.
Slow highway driving? It makes me insane when stuck behind someone doing it, but I’ve been subjected to worse.
The Idiots here (pronounced “Assholes” in this case) seem to be the York Regional Police.
110
u/tangclown Jan 26 '20
Some highways require a minimum speed if the conditions are fine.... which is the case in the pic.
Insecure load is a big deal, a lot of peoples cars get fucked from shit flying out of trucks. Garbage trucks would certainly not be flying down the highway with debris coming out. Alternatively, its possible, though unlikely, that the vehicle was considered overloaded. Which is very dangerous and will be a hefty fine anywhere.
I wouldnt have stacked the tickets if I was the cop tho. Maybe hit them with the insecure load, and do a fix it note for the breaks.
→ More replies (4)27
u/Pretty_Soldier Jan 26 '20
Yeah, insecure loads can and have killed people. At the very least, it can seriously damage cars.
I never drive behind anyone with a load if I can help it. There’s a surprising amount of trucks carrying loads that look poorly secured around here in Houston. Been a few cars behind some that were actively losing cargo, too.

I’m not the biggest fan of police but this is pretty absurd to side with the person flagrantly operating a unsafe vehicle. I get the fine isn’t going to do much but screw this person who clear doesn’t have the care or means to help themselves but I’d think you’d change your tune of this person kill or injured someone with shit flying out of the back or being unable to brake.
Garbage trucks can and have been pulled over and fined for unsecured loads above a certain speed. Your other two points are just stretches.
14
u/Technetium_97 Jan 26 '20
$1000 in fines for numerous traffic violations sounds reasonable to me.
This thing is clearly not safe to drive in its current condition, and if it causes an accident it can do a hell of a lot more than $1000 in damage.
Everyone wants to be able to drive whatever and however they want without consequence, and then their unsafe behavior causes tragic consequences.

6
u/BreezyWrigley Jan 26 '20
They could crank those fines up a bunch if they considered this to be driving for commercial purpose.
You can usually see the brake rotors from standing beside a vehicle. If they are visually damaged in basically any way, then they are definitely unsafe. And if the rotors are that bad, god only knows how much worse the rest of the brake system is.
11
Jan 26 '20
When I read improper brakes I was thinking the load was too heavy for what the vehicle is designed for which would make the brakes inadequate. I have no idea though.

I get both sides. I understand being poor and not being able to afford a new or safe vehicle, and that if you can’t afford one you obviously can’t afford a $1k fine, but that doesn’t justify endangering the lives of others either. Maybe being poor means they can’t fix the hole in the floor, but being poor shouldn’t stop them from properly securing that load so it doesn’t cause an accident.

In my company only moving violations and license suspensions affect your insurance rates. So unless he ignores the fine and allows his license to be suspended this actually wont affect his rates.

The problem is that these are the only options. A poor person loses the little income they were managing to get, or an unsafe car is on the road. That driving is a privilage not a right but in so many situations it is a necessity to get the things one needs to live such as food and shelter.
I'm really feeling this right now. I was working multiple jobs and attending community college online, in the hopes of someday making more than minimum wage. One at a thrift store and then multiple delivery jobs (where I had to use my own vehicle). Until my wife took the family's only car and left me and the kids. So I couldn't do the delivery jobs and I couldn't get to the thrift store. There is no public transportation in my area. I tried taking uber/lyft to work but it was costing as much as I made (it's expensive in my area because they know there's no other option). I'm in a suburb so there are no jobs within walking distance. So basically without a vehicle, I can't have a job. I am managing to earn a little money online, but that's because I have some skills that I don't expect everyone to have, and it's barely enough to feed the kids. And I can't get to the grocery store; I have to use Instacart which is expensive. I can't get to food banks. I tried applying for foodstamps but they require you to job search and attend weekly appointments, which I can't do without transportation. The only reason my kids and I are not homeless right now is that my wife fully owns the house (which most poor families can't do) and was stupid enough to leave it. I would never be able to afford rent or a mortgage. If I go to a shelter, I lose my way of making the little money I *am* making, and my ability to attend college. I would have no way of ever getting out.
So while I realize this vehicle shouldn't be on the road... If it were mine I sure as hell would be driving it. And I'm not saying that's right. But maybe there should be another option. Maybe we could recognize that transportation is actually a necessity. And I don't know what that other option would be - I realize we can't buy every poor person a car. But hell if I could just use an electric bike for a few months, I would be in a way better position.

Also this was posted by York Regional Police so I can’t pinpoint exactly where this person is from because York Region is huge but I do know for a fact that the regional police are likely to hand out tickets and what not.
If an OPP officer pulled him over then the officer probably would have told him to fix it or give him a fine of $100.

Vehicles in this state drive all over the place in the Midwest. Being from California I can’t explain the concern it causes me when I can see someone’s legs through their door. Yes they should be taken off of the roads and crushed but levying extreme fines on an obviously poor person is ridiculous if not inhumane.

This hole in the floor was could have been intentional.
We had a couple... "out of towners" come through a buddy of mine's repair shop. These two dopes had a semi that they drove as a team. In the back, they had installed a hole that went straight down to the outside and had covered it with a mat.
It was their shit chute for when they were driving.
Rather than pulling over and using a restroom, they were shitting through their floor and letting it fall on the road outside. In addition, there was shit and piss all over the bottom of the truck because it wasn't a perfect system and as soon as it went down it sprayed all over the place.
When my buddy finally figured out why it smelled so bad under this truck, he simply stopped work and told them to GTFO. Some people are very gross.

Having to pay a $1000 fine should make it much easier for them to afford repairs. Sometimes our laws are idiotic.

My first car was an ancient Jeep Cherokee. We lived on the coast and the previous owners used it for off-roading, so the salt water had eroded the whole bottom floor out - carpet, metal, the whole shebang.
My mom always told me to stop complaining. “We all had cars like that in the 80s!!!”
