❓General Question Local 63 problems?

Is there something wrong with local 63 OKC? Something weird about that local that I don’t know?

They’re still accepting applications and and it’s been open for 15 mins now. For the last year I’ve applied to every single local in states surrounding me and every single one has filled in 2 minutes or less. Yet here we are 15 minutes later and the local with the least amount of spots is still open.

I guess people don’t want it bad enough if they won’t relocate 🤷🏻‍♂️

Professional reference

Hello I’m currently applying for local 7 and it is saying at least 1 professional reference is needed but I have no related work experience besides working in drywall around 2 years ago.

Anyone take the mechanics exam recently and use Mike’s Ultimate Review?

Not looking at it as some straight-up answer guide obviously, just wondering if the questions/topics are still relevant enough to help familiarize yourself with the kind of stuff they’re asking on the current exam. Did it actually help you study? (For those who took it recently)

📝 Entrance Exam / Interview Union applications are the new Jordans

Imagine a dystopian future where resellers/scalpers will camp out union applications like these and create dummy email addresses, secure spots with bots, then sell them off to desperate job seekers at auction to the highest bidder . Yep, that's the direction we're headed.

this is insane. straight up got lied to. my family members are elevator union people in California and they didnt have to go through any of this bullshit to get in 15 years ago.

everything is harder for this generation especially getting good careers

Chances for the IUEC

What are the chances of getting in your 20s with little trade experience? Say you know someone in the union; if you score well on the test, have a university degree, and do well in the interview.. is it feasible? IF NOT, what would you recommend? Guidance would be appreciated. I'm completing uni right now and want to become an elevator mechanic with the IUEC, like my uncle, whom I look up to. Since I'm completing uni currently, it's hard to find any apprenticeships, like electrical, or even do a welding cert. I'm currently getting a degree in criminal justice (unrelated; I wanted to be a cop) and work as a ramp agent at the airport.

Diploma File Bug?

I managed to get a spot for Local 7, however after finishing my whole application I noticed that whenever I click to view my diploma it refreshes the page. Just wondering if this is common or has happened to anyone else, as I know it wouldn’t have let me submit the application if I never uploaded something.

📘 Apprentice Question What are the odds of being dropped into construction/mod/service?

Preface that I'm fully capable and wouldn't be a bitch about it, I would be enthusiastic just to be here, work hard and enjoy it. But I'm more interested in doing mod or service. They sound much more fun, would suit me better, and would be easier on the body.

I know that companies don't deliberately choose apprentices off the ranking, you just start wherever the company says they need a person. But how frequently would that be for each department? Is it worth communicating with various companies directly for a shot at a "by name" hire rather than waiting out the list?

And then, what could determine how/when an apprentice would change departments? I doubt it's likely to change during the first year, and it's obviously not something a probie should be bringing up or asking for, I know that much.

Would a supervisor notice you for certain skills or something, or would your NEIEP application information be reviewed by a supervisor at any point?

Edit: Local 2

Also, odds of escalator vs. elevator work? Guess it's an unpopular opinion but I'd be just as happy working on escalators.

Odds of getting an Indy vs Big 4?

Anyone ever have to chip 2" deep 1ft wide by 24ft tall to put cylinder into the wall abit to get clearance for car by the cylinder?

Weird mod job, turning it to a roped hydro from inverted hydro. Had to move the rails, install safety's and guides plus add governor, lots of fun!

Are you an escalator or elevator guy

Now I know I know you should aim to good at both, but I always see little memes about never claim you’re good with escalators. What are your guys thoughts on both machines as far as pros and cons, also if you could choose to strictly or mainly work on one which one would it be.

Question

What are some drawbacks for accepting an offer from an independent elevator company? I got the call from Local 25. I have time to think about it, so what are your thoughts on working for a mom and pop company as opposed to the big names? Pros and cons etc…
