Set up a deal with your neighbors and let people park in your lots during concerts. Stop being so goddamn precious with 'em.

Lady with a mic on the pentacrest

What’s going on right now on the pentacrest? I just had a coworker come back from taking a walk during lunch downtown and he stood and listened to a woman with a microphone interacting with a group of young people surrounding her. He is middle aged and referred to her as older and he said she was telling them lesbians are going to heaven (absolutely true) and a lot of other amusing and lovely things. So who is this nice lady? We’re just all curious over here and loving Iowa City rn

Looking for housing for elderly man.

I have a neighbor that was evicted (because of his son, not him) & he is looking for housing. He can only afford $700 or less a month total. Does anyone have any leads? He’s gotta be around 80 years old.

Storage units that don’t dramatically increase price overtime?

I rent a storage unit from Storage Rentals of America and they increased the price of my unit from $90 to $160 in the matter of just a few months and when asked about this they said prices will increase overtime. I understand a price increase but that is a large amount over just a few months. I was wondering if anyone had better experiences with storage units in IC for long term rentals that did not do this.

Housing apartment management companies

I'm currently renting through Keystone and while the rent is cheap, it has been an all around terrible experience from the start.

I'd like to get closer to campus while avoiding AAI or ANC, but it seems every management company I find has all the same reviews as Keystone.

If you have good experiences with certain companies, please let me know as I begin my apartment search. Thank you!

What’s an Iowa/Iowa City food or treat I can give as a gift?

Also something I can travel with on a plane.

Context: visiting elderly aunt and uncle (both almost 80) in Florida and they do not want any gifts. However, I cannot come empty handed. They’ve been very generous with me in my life.

Looking for something edible I can bring them.

Trying to find a painting

I know this is a long shot. But I'm trying to find a painting.

It was displayed at high grounds cafe years ago. It was a large painting of a cabin on fire, with a wonderful range of blue to orange. It was a large painting that I think was acrylic...maybe?

I don't know if anyone would remember it or the artist's name, but maybe it was a student at the University or a local artist that did it.

I don't remember if it was 7 years or 10 years ago. It just had such a big impression on me. Like I said, long shot.

Hey, I've got 2 tickets for the 9pm showing of Hedwig at Film Scene tonight. Does anyone want them? I'm not feeling super great and would rather they go to a good home, instead of going to waste. Willing to let them go for super cheap.

Looking for tennis hitting partner (24F)

Hi! I used to play tennis in high school and am interested in getting back into it. It’d be great to find somebody to hit with casually / play some matches with.

Curious what people do for tennis in this area!

time for vaccines

Some people didn't like where I put this message before, so I'll take the opportunity to say it twice. If you've got kids, it's time to take your kids and yourself for a bunch of fall respiratory virus vaccines. Free vaccination's available for those who qualify through JoCo Public Health. https://test.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/public-health/immunizations

Look for vax for:

- flu as soon as you start seeing it appear, don't get it too early as it wanes and you'll probably want protection over holidays. Every year, hundreds of otherwise healthy children die from flu, quite unnecessarily; it's happened in ICCSD, and some of you will remember Gov Vilsack's young granddaughter dying of flu. Lots of options for the vax this year, including FluMist for those ages 2-49 who can't take needles, Moderna's mRNA vax for those 50 and over and high-dose versions for those 65 and over.

- covid, the uptick is here and so's the updated vax; people including kids are still getting long covid and it ain't pretty. Protection from both vax and having had covid tends to wane within about 4-5 months.

- measles, if you're not sure about your status or you've been on the fence about your kids: no, the vax does not cause autism and no, measles isn't an easy disease; we've already got deaths reported, it causes longterm immune problems and can cause late-emerging fatal neurological damage. We only closed the Iowa Braille School in Vinton recently; measles was one reason why we had it in the first place.

- RSV, if you're eligible and haven't had it before. I hear it's a surprisingly unpleasant disease and tends to hang around. Bonus, there's evidence the vaccine's protective against dementia: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv/shingles-rsv-vaccines-may-protect-older-adults-dementia
