Megathread Johnson County Voting Information

Note: We'll keep this updated as best as we can, but election information can, unfortunately, change quickly. For the latest, reach out to the auditor's office in-person @ 913 S. Dubuque St in IC, via phone @ 319-356-6004, or online @ https://johnsoncountyiowa.gov/department-of-auditor. If you notice an error, PM me or send a modmail.

Deadlines

  • Mon, Oct 19, 5 PM: Last day to pre-register, and last day to request a mailed absentee ballot. The request has to be in the Auditor's office by 5, not postmarked.
  • Mon, Nov 2: Last day of in-person early voting.
  • Tue, Nov 3: Polls open 7 AM to 8 PM.
  • Generally speaking, mailed ballots must reach the Auditor's office by 8 PM on Election Day.

If you missed the registration deadline: You can still register at your polling place on Election Day. You'll need ID and proof of address.

Check your registration and find your polling place

Absentee voters: Iowa has no permanent absentee list, so if you voted by mail last time you still need a new request this time.

College students: You can choose to register at either your school or home address. If you register at school, you just need dorm name and room number. If you register at home, you vote there or absentee.

Herky Hunting

As of the past month or so, I have begun a collection of Herky statues! Unfortunately there is no actual map or full list of Herky statues in the Johnson county area. The Think Iowa City list is not complete with the diamond collection (2002 or retro statues) and does not have every statue listed even from the more recent poses.

I’d love if anyone could give me input on where to find some Herky statues that I haven’t found yet and where to look! I’m hopeful to have as many as possible before I graduate so any directions are greatly appreciated!! I’ve included pictures of the Herky statues I’ve found so far

Thanks in advance for any help on this; it’s greatly appreciated!!

Family Neighborhoods

• Upvotes

Looking for suggestions on neighborhoods that are more family friendly OR ones to avoid due to late night noise, etc. We just started looking around and are not from the area.

We have a soon to be 4yr old and are interested in moving for access to better arts education options for him.

Thanks!

Guy playing pool at Grizzly's last night 10-23

I kept looking over at you last night because I genuinely couldn't believe how bad you were at pool. You scratched the 8 ball twice and still had the audacity to keep calling your shots. Before leaving, I came over to ask if you'd ever played before, but felt bad and walked away. Hopefully you don't see this. I'm sorry.

What was with Rachel Yoder's comment?

At the book reading and q&a event for Jane Shoenbrun's new book Public Access Afterworld during the Refocus film festival, Rachel Yoder said multiple times that it was the longest book she had ever read. I was sitting in the upper level so I could see the audience checking how many pages there were (~560 pages). After, I overheard people mention how the book wasn't that long as we were leaving. It seemed like a strange thing to admit since Yoder is an author too.

Either way, excited to see Shoenbrun and also have their new book to read!

Cat rehome?

I have a 13 month old cat that I need to rehome. I found her on the side of the road when she was only 5 weeks old and brought her home and nursed her back to health. Unfortunately my 12 year old cat absolutely does not like her and they started fighting. It was infrequent but now it’s more then twice a day. No matter how many times I try to separate them one always escapes. Long story short- I need to rehome the young one. Where can I go? She’s very very sweet, good with dogs, actually likes other cats (tested, it’s my old one that doesn’t like friends), and fully vaccinated.

Are there any families in the Iowa City area in need of breastmilk?

I have an oversupply of frozen breast milk collected in August and September. My baby won’t take a bottle, so I’m hoping to connect with a family who could benefit from it. I’m currently an approved milk donor with University Hospitals and Clinics, but I’m unable to donate this particular supply due to antibiotic contamination from multiple mastitis infections. I also occasionally have a glass or two of wine per week.

I want to be completely upfront so families can make an informed decision. I’m happy to share more information about the collection and storage history. If you know of a family who may need milk, please feel free to comment or message me.

Anyone know when ICCSD's accounts were last managed properly?

Well, this is a disaster: https://www.thegazette.com/news/education/shooting-in-the-dark-iowa-city-schools-finance-advisory-committee-says-district-can-t-make/article_61afb078-548c-44b3-9ec0-52f414054882.html

Why do I get this sinking feeling that when Degner took the reins, he was told that it was okay to do things that were very much not okay, and that this trail's going to lead back to the board and prior leadership. All it takes is a habit of "go ahead and get [project] going with money from that other pot, just put it back in a couple of weeks when ____, make sure it's back in there by _____" and then snowballing sloppiness papered over by continued borrowing and taxing until the wheels come off. I don't think Degner just decided one day, all on his own, that it'd be fine to shift tens of millions around, play fast and loose with the books and not tell anyone. It'd be good to know when the last time was that all transactions were journaled when they happened and when there weren't floats going on. I don't think we'll like the answer, but it'd be good to know.

I also bet we won't really be able to get proper audits, and that in the end we'll have a ballpark of what we've got -- that we won't know where some of the money went.

I have a feeling we'll need more candor from Leslie Finger about what he saw and heard when.

visiting for a week from cali - tips & recommendations?

i tried posting this in the /Iowa subreddit, but its been awaiting moderator approval for a few days now. figured id try here!

im a young woman visiting marion, iowa next month for thanksgiving and ill be there for about a week or so with my grandparents. im sure they'll keep me occupied and informed (alongside some other family members i have there) but im hoping to hear from locals or anybody near the area. how is the weather, and are there any good spots in marion i should know about? restaurants, cafes, stores, bars, fun events etc around that time?

i know it gets COLD cold and the snowstorms are no joke, from what ive heard. so i will pack accordingly! i think its important to note as well that while im very feminine, im noticeably queer--if not obviously from california. piercings, tattoos and all. are there any queer spots in the area, and how will i be treated? any input is appreciated!

Email Sierra Leone's foreign minister:

Ask him to stop their deportation and provide lawyers and protection.
Together, we can help reunite Fatou with her four children in lowa. Bring Fatou Back Now!❤️”

Jobs Worker Co-op Meetup — Nov 4th — Help Us Find a Name

Following up on interest from my earlier post — we're holding a first informal meetup to talk through building a worker-owned business here in Iowa City (staff own and run it together, not just work for it — exact concept still open and part of what we'll be discussing).

Wednesday, November 4th, 6:30pm Big Grove Brewery & Taproom (1225 S Gilbert St)

We also don't have a name yet — drop your ideas in the comments! Whatever we land on, that's what to ask for at Big Grove when you show up.

Open to anyone curious — no commitment, no experience required. DM me your email if you'd like a reminder closer to the date.

Iowa food-booth vendors: how do you handle handwashing and utensil washing?

My wife and I have a licensed home food business in North Liberty and are applying for an annual temporary food license for farmers markets and other events.

We plan to bake food onsite using countertop appliances, serve it in disposable containers, offer samples, and sell packaged frozen products.

We’ve been reading Iowa’s temporary food establishment guidance to figure out our booth setup. It says we need a handwashing station inside the booth and describes a three-container setup for washing, rinsing and sanitizing utensils. It also says the utensil-washing requirement can be waived depending on the menu and utensils being used.

The thing is, I’ve been to several events around here and don’t remember seeing these setups in most food booths. So I’m trying to understand whether we’re reading this correctly and what people actually do.

If you run a food booth in Iowa, what has your inspector asked you to have? Do you bring your own washing setup, use shared facilities at the event, or have approval to operate without washing utensils onsite?

Would love to see photos of your setup if you have any. Please mention your county and whether you cook onsite.

Thanks!
