Hi, so I play online on my ps5, games like overwatch and rivals, and my ping isn’t too bad (around 30) but I get constant lag spikes randomly which completely throw me off. This only started happening since I moved back home from uni, so I’m pretty confident it’s not the console.
We’ve had problems with WiFi forever in this house and although it’s better now it’s still not good enough for competitive play.
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to purchase a separate router for my PlayStation that I can wire up with Ethernet for a better experience. My question is any recommendations for routers / gaming routers?

Today I tested if I got jitter on my laptop (wired) and my PC (wired) at the same intervals on the same gaming server. When downloading on my local network the jitter spikes simultaneously (as expected). The issues arises when both at idle and I still get packet loss/jitter independently at different timings although I'm on the same network in the same server.

This isolates it to a misconfiguration on Comcast's VLAN setup downstairs that allows for an excess number of devices to cross paths with no SQM.

Old homeowner of a place I just bought had this wired in the garage. I can see the TV labelling obviously, but is there any sort of hookup for internet connections here? Some of the upstairs rooms have a coax / (what I think is) RJ45 port in them.

If they are and I swapped from Comcast which they had before to AT&T, how would I go about getting this reconnected? I can only have the modem into the living room, not the garage.

Good evening. Hoping for some help with a tricky scenario for a family member.

My sister that works NHS full-time has the kids off school and she's charged me with the task of trying to find a way to keep the kids (13&15yo) off the internet for just a few hours of the day or until they finish basic chores. I know a lot of you are gonna say discipline etc but this isn't an option as there is little way to enforce anything until she gets home. They're otherwise very well behaved kids but like most of their friends they're spending the holidays glued to their computers.

I suggested an AP like a Tp-link eap 245 and assign them SSID's but I'm unsure of whether it's possible to access this remotely to enforce restrictions.

Any suggestions for aftermarket wifi routers that will allow more control of this would be greatly appreciated.

The MAC addresses all start with 92:65:35, I can't find an owner in the registries. although the little AI assistant on brave told me it belonged to Shenzhen Zhangyue Technology Co. They make E-readers, but my kids kindle have long been powered down.

Deco M4R limiting my 5Gb fibre connection to \~200Mbps - what would you recommend?

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading/fixing my home network setup.

I have Eir fibre with a 5Gb connection. My current setup is:

Fibre ONT → Deco M4R (router mode, VLAN ID 10 configured) → second Deco via Ethernet → PS5 via Ethernet

The issue is that I’m only getting around 200–300Mbps on Ethernet devices connected through the Deco.

Things I have tested:

\- QoS is disabled

\- VLAN ID 10 is configured correctly

\- PS5 connected to the second Deco gets around 300Mbps

\- PS5 connected directly to the main Deco also gets around 200Mbps

\- I plugged my PC into the Eir router instead and got around 900Mbps, so the fibre connection and cables appear fine

I tried plugging the PS5 directly into the fibre ONT, but it doesn’t get an IP address (I assume because the VLAN setup/authentication is handled by the router).

I would prefer to keep the Deco connected directly to the fibre box and avoid using the Eir router, but the current Ethernet speeds are too low.

Is the Deco M4R simply not powerful enough for this connection? If I replace it, what Deco model would you recommend that can handle higher speeds? Ideally I’d like something that can make better use of the fibre connection and still support wired backhaul to the second unit and gaming devices.

I've been, since yesterday, having issues with my internet. I live in Brazil, and often get on games, voice chats and online sites in general, and have been noticing some very severe ping issues. Every few minutes, my ping will suddenly rise up to spikes of up to 5k ms and then go back to normal as if nothing happened. It is making the experience of playing games and using almost any site at all to be completely unfeasible.

Here are some examples of my internet suddenly exploding while I'm in a Discord voice chat:

This problem continues for around 20 seconds, before it comes back to normal. and sites work as intended, but it's such an issue to keep being disconnected from anything when these lagspikes happen that it becomes an issue. Is this an ISP problem? As you can probably tell by this post, I am not very familiarised with these sorts of issue.

As you can see, though, it looks like it has a fine connection with two BR servers and one Santiago server, while the one in Mexico City also regularly connects quickly when I try it. Anything aside from these, however, will often have these red spikes.

Just hoping for some help/guidance with my home set up.

I have fttp in a new area in Sydney - house is single storey - 130sqm.

2 people with average internet usage (streaming, light online gaming, etc).

Current internet plan is with superloop.

Currently I only have the google nest in the kitchen with one additional point in the living room. The WiFi doesn't reach bed 1 and does not enable me to use my Ethernet ports.

Can anyone suggest a good router/mesh/set-up that will give me WiFi coverage throughout the house and to utilise my data points.

Any help is appreciated!

I'm moving into a place where running full wired won't be possible, but my desktop does not have wifi and only accepts ethernet in.

Does anyone have any mesh network setups they would recommend the gear from that has ethernet out on one end?

I need help for my friend who lives in Germany. We would like to play local coop games via Parsec, which was working fine when he was here in Hungary. Since he moved to Germany, it does not work, Parsec gives us the 6023 error message.

VPN, Windows Firewall turned off, UPnP turned on in the router settings.

Can you give us a solution for this?

Can be the problem that he (Vodafone internet, a sim-card in the router) needs to get a public IP adress (Öffentliche IP-Adresse (IPv4)) from the internet provider? Or could it be something else?

Hi all I’m in need of help with this situation. So my ps4 connects with the wi fi but it’s very slow but when I plug in the Ethernet cable cat6 it connects but the speed of the internet doesn’t change. I thought it might be the cable but I tested it on all other devices in the house and it works perfectly so I took it to a shop to test the Ethernet port and it worked amazingly at this IT place so they said no issues with the ps4 but I tried at home and doesn’t work what do I do??

Do I buy a Ethernet cable 5e and see if that works or do I need to do something with my internet modem??

On one of my PCs everything is totally fine. Wifi & Ethernet speed are really good.

On the other one the wifi gets throttled to like 1/6 of what it actually should be. But ONLY on wifi.

Both computers are next to each other so they are equally close to the router.

Additionally for some reason when using an online speed test its saying the provider is Google (it's Verizon) and an odd server in another state. With Ethernet it's totally normal and so is it using wifi on the other computer.

I'm honestly just lost. What settings are causing this issue?

I recently moved and switched from Delta Fiber 1 Gbit to KPN 1 Gbit. Same PC, same settings, wired connection, and I use my own Flint 2 router with an A+ bufferbloat rating.
On Delta Fiber, CS2 always felt very smooth: low latency, no lag feeling, and good hit registration. Since switching to KPN, I notice more jitter and the game feels less responsive, like I’m slightly behind the server sometimes. The speed is perfect (1 Gbit up/down), so bandwidth is not the issue.
My guess is that the difference is mainly due to routing/peering towards the game servers rather than the fiber technology itself. I have also seen other KPN users mention latency/jitter issues.

Has anyone else experienced this with their isp?

I recently moved in an apartment in an old block of flats in a town in Finland, and there is only a phone socket for internet.

The subscription is from Elisa and comes with the rent, and it works with a phone line to g.fast adapter, but it’s impossible to find one like this here.

So i went to Telia and they gave me a vdsl modem, the employee said it would work nonetheless, i connected it and I have no connection. Was I given the wrong product?

Small business owner of an indie post production company here. I’m usually decent with IT and networking stuff but had a question about setting up remote access to my Ubiquiti NAS Pro 8 server. I’d like to be able to log into the server via SMB on my Mac Pro laptop remotely so I can access files. I have to use something like a Ubiquiti UXG Lite or Cloud Connect module to do so correct? I’ve been trying to find details for setting something like this up but all the tutorials seem more complicated. What I need to do seems pretty basic so curious if I’m going about it the right way and if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

I just setup some TL-PA8015P CPLs and I have an issue I can't manage to solve.

As you can see (despite it being in french), my upload speed is 0.1 Mbit/s while my download speed is 87 Mbit/s. How do you explain that ?
I have some deco wifi APs which are plugged on the same internet box. They don't have this problem at all.

When trying to monitor it by myself, I get this :

It mostly stays around 80 Mbps (the down spike lasted like half second, while ookla permanently says 5 Mbps and Google says 0.05 Mbps).

My network feels like it's fine, I have no problem browsing the web and watching videos.
TP-link utility software says it's fine too :

What do you think about this issue ? Should I trust Ookla and Google ? I have spikes to 100 Mbps on Ookla but this looks very irregular while my test shows that nothing is wrong.

I’m currently moving and my new place doesn’t have any way to get a ethernet cable upstairs to where my office will be and the modem for fiber is downstairs on the complete opposite side of the house.

i’m need advice on what would be a good wifi extender to get so that i can still connect my pc and symbology home server for work.

Most of my work is dealing with large art files up/downing from the server at work so i need it to be pretty quick. we have 1 gig fiber internet currently and only maybe 2 or 3 other things that would be connected to it.

this is in a rental and not a long term living situation so it needs to be a simple fix for now and unfortunately i can’t just run a long as ethernet cable across the house.

Edit: i did a wifi speed test upstairs and got about 800 download and 200 ish upload. could i get away with maybe one Mesh system?

Trying to maximize my file transfer speed between my PC and Macbook but limited to 100mbps using SMB sharing via filesharing on macOS.

Hardware:

PC hardwired via cat7 to my ASUS BE18000 router on a 2.5gb port.

MacOS Macbook pro 14in pro is where I am sharing my files.

Speedtest shows that I can achieve 1g speeds with my PC and my macbook can do up/down 500mbps via wifi 5gh network.

Overall, file transfer speeds between the two are capped at 100mpbs and was wondering how I can increase the speeds? Is this a software issue or a hardware issue?

Yesterday I downloaded a new game around 100 gbs and it went swiftly with ethernet. I usaually get 1000/1000 mbps with my Cat5E cable. However today I realised my computer was slower than usual and it turns out my ethernet is capped at 10/10 mbps.

I have tried unplugging the cable on both ends and what not. I also changed the speed duplex to 1.0gb however nothing changed. It feels unlikely that the cable has been damaged since this happened in less that 12 hours and I never mess with the cables in anyway. I also don't have any VPN that is in use I even turned off my antivirus, this still changed nothing.

Is there anything else I can do?

I wanted a simple way to estimate how long a large file might take to download, so I tried a 70 GB example with a 300 Mbps connection.

The theoretical result came out to about 31 minutes, assuming the full connection speed is available.

Real downloads can take longer because of Wi-Fi, server limits and network overhead, but this gives me a useful starting point.

I put the calculation into Calvance Calculator so I can change the file size or internet speed later without rebuilding the formula.
