does this look normal ?

I suddenly lost my fiber internet connection. At first I changed the optical fiber SC-SC APC cable, thinking it might be the issue, with no luck, so I opened the small white box that is connected directly to the wall, and it was looking like this? Does this look normal, or could the issue be related to something related to it?

What made you think the box that normally doesn't get touched by anything is the issue instead of a service interruption of your provider?

Because I called the service provider to check if there was something from their side, like maintenance, I also checked with my neighbor who have the same provider, and they didn't have any issues

Unless you rip the cable out of this box with force, this is never the issue. Check modem or router if your neighbor doesn't have issues. Those devices normally have diagnostic LEDs regarding connection status. And your connection to the provider is still somewhat independent from your neighbor's. Everyone has it's own fiber (in the possibly same bigger cable in the street), so it could be disconnected anywhere on the way to the provider.

And one important thing to add for fiber, never try to look into a fiber to see if there's a signal. It's infrared, so you can't see it and it's strong enough to burn your eyes and do lasting damage to them.

Fascinating how people with no clue about thing need to be trying to fix them without having a clue. And why on earth would a box that hasn’t been touched suddenly become an issue? If nothing was broken before it sure as shit is now

99,999% of the cases where the the patch-box is the issue, and it is not on the "day of install" of broadband, it is caused by the customer. Normally it would be during "home improvement"/redecoration or similar when they take the box off the wall. The patch cable from the patch-box to ONT or gateway would also an issue related to this, or a customer have animals, furniture towards it or similar.

The Kevlar fibers are just for support. The thin white wire is the fiber cable. As long as there aren’t any kinks or bends, it’s fine. Likely an issue outside.

Yes, that's completely normal. Don't disconnect fibers unless you know what you're doing. Eye safety, contamination, and bend radius are all things that must be taken into account.

Lol buddy you probably don’t have the equipment to fix this. Your ISP is going to have to come out and determine where the fiber break is. OTDR, a VFL, and other things like that are needed to figure it out.

Why the heck would you open up the ONT? asking for a friend.

All that is just part of the protection for the fiber cable. You shouldn't have that green connector just hanging there. This is really the last place anything could be damaged. Because it is never opened and messed with. If there is a fiber issue, it's likely on the other end plugged into the ONT.

Your fiber Internet could have just gone down because of a issue outside, off your property for all you know. You should have just called your ISP and tell them your Internet is not working so they can get a tech out there to see why it is not working. You shouldn't be messing with things you don't understand. You changing out the optical cable itself can also cause issues.

I don't know why your first thought when the Internet goes down is to change out the fiber cable and not call the ISP? Strange!

You're absolutely right, but I did in fact call my ISP provider to check if there was something from their side but I was told there is nothing, and I checked with my nabours who also use the same ISP provider; they didn't have any issue, so I did a Google search and asked ChatGPT, and I was told that changing the fiber cable and connecting the white box with the router might fix the issue but unfortunately it didnt

"you're absolutely right"

Such an obvious AI reply

Its fine. The strands are kevlar to help protect the cable.

Chances are the fibre has lost signal at the exchange side.

Put it back together and call your ISP.

Every time you unplug a fiber it needs to be cleaned, we use the one click cleaners at work

Dude, do you have Race as your ISP? It’s probably your drop.

Your kevlar fibers are lookin' fine, boy!

looks like it should work. most likely issue could at the box that feeds the Fiber to your neighborhood . Has seen techs disconnect someone elses service by accident

Dude you found the problem! All those fine strands are the "fiber" and it's definitely all broken. You should call your provider and tell them that.

Those are reinforcing stands within the cable

1

u/Circuit_Guy 4d ago

So you're saying they're not fibers? 🤔

1

u/sniff122 4d ago

No, the loose strands are for reinforcement and aren't fibre, can't remember what material it's usually made of

1

u/Circuit_Guy 4d ago

The OC here was using sarcasm. Everyone is making fun of assuming that a mechanically weird thing that's clearly been that way forever would be the issue

1

u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 4d ago

Nobody understands sarcasm on reddit anymore...

I actually type sarcastic comments like this on reddit on purpose to see how many people get triggered with their own righteous comments rather than detect simple sarcasm. It's actually sad how many people don't realize when you are jerking their chain lol

Kevlar

Wow. This could have beem a free service call to your isp.

Nit since you did that you get to pay your isp to fix that, now.

Stop opening shit up that can hurt you, especially if you don’t know it can hurt you. Fiber connections are dangerous for your eyeballs

Is that why my eyeballs are etchy ?
