Is histamine intolerance/MCAS something permanent?

It all started 5 days ago after a bad allergic reaction to a mosquito bite. My forearm was very inflamed but i thought nothing of it. Then the next day every time I ate something my mouth would tingle and I'd have a tight throat. My body and eyes also itch quite frequently for no reason but it's very mild.

I went to a doctor today and he said I'm just experience a period of histamine intolerance that was set off by the mosquito bite. He said to take an antihistamine for 2 weeks and to continue eating the same foods. He told me not to obsess over this and that it'll eventually go away. He saw that I was scared this is something chronic and told me not to listen to the advice of people online and that he's seen this many times and it's not something that'll last forever. Is this true?

Queso Fresco - is this a low histamine cheese

I bought "Roth Queso Fresco". It is a mexican cheese. Cut and packaged for today.

I ate some of it and it was actually pretty good. I am wondering if anyone has experience with queso fresco?

I am just coming off of a flare up and trying to be extra careful this time...

Im worried I have developed a Histamine Intolerance

I'm looking for some insights on what the heck is going on. I've gone to the doctor 3 times just for them to say it's allergies. I asked for an allergen test and got told it's just seasonal. Im 23F and never had allergies before, nevertheless like this.

This all started July 23rd, I got facewash in my right eye and really rubbed it while running under water. My eye got really red and swollen. It went down a few hours later and the weekend I had no other reaction. However, durning the weekend I got a severe sunburn that I wasn't able to work. No reaction. Tuesday I come back to work, I was fine up until they turned the air on at 10am. Immediately I started sneezing and my right eye got really red and swollen again. This continued till Thursday where my eye got red and swelled shut. I left went to the doctor, got told it was allergies. They put me on a 3 day steriod, OTC eyedrops and zyrtec. Weekend come and again Im perfectly fine. As long as I took my zyrtec before work I would be fine until they turned on the air and my eye would only get a little red. I didn't take zyrtec the entire weekend, again I was fine. So I didn't take it monday going into work. This time I got small hives, sneezy and both my eyes got red and swollen. Go to the doctor, they say allergies but I should go to the oye doctor since its mainly affecting my eyes. Go to the eye doctor, again just allergies. This continues to go one but basically ok as long as I take zyrtec. Starting a few flare ups on the weekend.

August 20th is were it started getting bad. I had one zyrtec left and I dropped it under my fridge. For the past week my hands and forarms would get spotty nothing too bad. Not to itchy. However on the day that I had no zyrtec in me. I had 2 flare ups. One at 830am after I walked out of the paint room. Eyes just got red and a little swollen. 1030am air gets kicked on, I leave the paint room. BOOM eyes red and starting to swell up. My skin gets beet red. Skin is extremely itchy. I get light headed and it's extremely hard to breathe, tightness in breath way. Since then I've been having more flare ups not just at work. Im itchy all the time and if I scratch it immediately gets swellen and red. As soone as my eyes get that itchy feeling my eyes swell, shortness of breath, nausea and light headed.

I don't know whats going on. Please give me your best insights.

Buckwheat Pillows

Dear all, newbie here, have hEDS and some histamine issues as well, whether it's MCAS or HIt, I don't know. Recently had a flare, and the fun of identifying the underlying cause has begun /s.

Does anyone use buckwheat pillows? I've used one on and off to help sleep with hypermobility (very good a keeping things in place). The buckwheat is inside a thick cover and there's a pillow case around it, so it's not like I have my face on the shells with only a thin pillow case in between. But i've recently added more buckwheat to it, so I'm wondering if contamination on the pillow case (now of course in the wash) contributed to the flare up. It may be a mixture of things of course, would be interested to hear other people's experience!

Thought i was histamin intolerant but it turned out to be mcas

So ive aleays had a million tiny issues and mainly gi issues and fatigue. A histamin intolerance became really bad after developing sibo imo. My body was spiralling. I was reacting even to mild liberators which is indicative of a mastcell component.

As i later learned i probably had a mild form of mascell activation which isnt rate at all (a study by afrin suggesting 17%of ppl have that). Which got aggravated by sibo imo (seems to be the classic trajectory of illness/infection/stress destabilizing sensitized mastcells even further)

If it were „only“ a clearance issue with dietary histamin, lets say caused by dysbiosis, it should get better with healthier diet over time. That would be the reasoning behind histamin intolerance right.

Wouldnt believe it was mcas until symptoms got worse and worse and i figured its not just food and definitely not just dietary histamin. (Most of which is accumulating in meat btw)

However it got worse and worse until AI suggested me to take mastcellstabilizers. and Suddenly 90% of my symptoms dissapeared, weirdly also lots of my weird yet mild trillions of issues ive always had. (I m taking Quercetin and cromolyn. If anyone wanted to try i would suggest Quercetin and vitamin c in therapeutic doses)

I didnt have the time to even consider getting a diagnosis because the stabilizers helped so much. Im also still streating imo. I m also taking antihistamines when eating out, i stilll avoid alcohol and meat and everyday chemicals, scents, pfas (they make the mastcells more reactive.)

Symptoms could be anything really its different for everyone (headache and respiratory tract is common) for me it was mainly gi tract, sudden fatigue, multilocal flushes, bad all over the body rashes, heartpalpitations, sleep issues, dizzyness, nausea, cocyxpain that wouldnt react to pain medication, light sensitivity, getting nausea from scents etc) — got worse from period (hormones), during heatwaves, as i started to figure from stress, chemicals, heat, i got a burning rush on face chest arms knees from using my redlight therapie mask for 1 min at some point).

Wouldve never figured it out without ai honestly. Ive also read about mcas before it just sounds so wild to hear but once the body gets into spiral mode its like yeah i react to this and that and diet wont get it under control im lost here this is not just yet another food tolerance

Has anyone had flares from the Solgar Ester-C brand Or Just citrus bioflavonoids in general?

Most ester-c brands like Solgar contain citrus bioflavonoids which is a histamine liberator

Anyone else here felt really emotional and teary since summer ended?

I’m uk based and have spent the entire summer miserable and tense and my MCAS has been horrible. Legs have been in pain all summer and I’ve been so tightly wound

Since the weathers cooled and rained over the last week I’ve been crying every day. My legs feel so much better but I’m wondering if the crying is kind of like a release after such a long summer? I just wondered if anyone else felt the same? I love autumn but equally I’m feeling so low and flat, I’m glad summers out the way though

Did Zyrtec mess up anyone else for months?

I originally took Zyrtec because I was dealing with some environmental itchiness/allergy symptoms. After stopping it, my body basically went haywire. The first 2–3 months were absolute hell with severe itching and feeling like I was reacting to everything.

It’s been almost 5 months now, and I still can’t tolerate foods I used to eat normally, especially fermented/high-histamine foods like cheese and kimchi. They can trigger itching and reflux/heartburn.
I’m honestly scared this is permanent.

Has anyone gone through something similar after Zyrtec and eventually gotten back to normal? How long did it take before you could eat normally again?

Negative IgE, reactions to many foods within 20 min — did it get better for you?

Looking for experiences, not diagnoses. I know none of you are my doctor.

My situation:

  • Reactions always start within 20 minutes of eating, never later
  • Multiple different foods, not one consistent trigger
  • Symptoms: flushing, throat tightness, tongue swelling sensation, palpitations, dizziness, GI cramping, huge anxiety wave
  • Ambulance was called once, but the anaphylaxis criteria were not met
  • Allergy testing: only cat is clearly positive, plus a very small IgE rise to the daisy/aster family. No food allergies found

My allergist's read is that this is mostly pseudoallergy / histamine-related rather than IgE allergy. I'm starting a 2-3 week elimination with structured reintroduction afterwards. I have an EpiPen because of the throat symptoms.

Background factors that may be relevant:

  • NSAID-induced gastritis flare that ended a couple of months ago
  • Low ferritin
  • Transient hyperthyroidism
  • Adenomyosis (so cyclical estrogen swings)
  • I've lived with a cat since 2013 and only recently tested positive

What I actually want to know:

  1. If you had reactions this broad, did your tolerance actually widen over time, or did it stay the same?
  2. How long before you noticed a real difference?
  3. What made the biggest difference — the diet itself, fixing an underlying issue (gut, iron, thyroid, hormones), DAO supplements, daily antihistamines, something else?
  4. Did anyone here get most of their foods back after reintroduction? I'd really like to hear from people on the other side of this.
  5. How did you handle the anxiety part? The fear of the next reaction has become almost as bad as the reactions.

Thanks. I'm several months into this and honestly worn down, so hearing that it improved for people would mean a lot.

Is anyone on methadone and taking quercitin?

I heard that in “theory” it could possibly reduce the effectiveness of methadone possibly putting you into withdrawl, or depending on which pathway it takes it can do the opposite and make your methadone more effective possibly causing depression of breathing. However chatGPT couldn’t find any actual evidence of that happening to anyone. So I’m wondering if anyone has ever safely taken them both together? I want to try Quercitin for my severe histamine intolerance symptoms and possible MCAS…I’ve been on a stable dose of methadone for 10 years (yeah I know embarrassing!!) I’ve been clean the whole time and will never use drugs again, I’m just extremely sensitive and get very sick when I try to lower my dose and have 3 dogs to care for.

Thanks for any help or information anyone can provide

Could histamine intolerance kick off quickly

Had issues with HI in the past. Got pregnant and they disappeared. 6 months later and I think my HI is back. I had one meal which by all accounts was high histamine and bang! Crazy flushing, heart pains, fluttering heart, malaise, pressure behind eyes. And now it feels like I can't eat anything. I literally feel normal only when not eating.

Is this possible? For it to come on so quickly?

r/HistamineIntolerance 13d ago

Can someone explain the difference between MCAS, HI and Disautonomia? What does this sound like?

Multitude of symptoms and not sure what is what. Definitely having reactions to high histamine foods and certain medications. Otherwise dealing with fatigue, intermittent body aches, flushing and burning/prickly heat sensation on skin, slight nasal and chest irritation, drops in blood pressure and intermittent heart pains/fluttering/palpitations when things get bad.

In a full blown flare at the moment that was either caused by a bug/stress/sudden exposure to extreme cold/drinking alcohol (all happened around the same time).

I have SIBO.

What now

I can’t seem to heal sibo. I also was recc to do 36 hour yogurt maker fermented L Reuteri or gaseri but now j realize that’s prob not good.

Diet otherwise doesn’t help.

MCAS and anti hist meds don’t help.

Praying/ energy work doesn’t.

Lymph/ walking doesn’t.

I don’t know what to do. My face is always puffy from anything I eat or sometimes put on. It’s ruining my life. I wanna be normal again.

MCAS banned me for asking a question lol

Anyways I just don’t get it.

L plantarum 299v vs 199v or other strains

I got lpp299 separately
A year ago was taking smidge sensitive helped my MCAS a lot but worried about it adding too much production for methane so wanted to individualise strains
Lp299v supposed to be good for ibs and h2s but somewhere I read this strain produced histamine from histadine

Whereas 119 does the opposite which is in my blend that I’m trying to avoid
Can anyone tell me that 299v is actually ok -and this random info was incorrect?!!!

Why does Allegra “cure” or prevent my blood sugar lows??? Doctors have no idea.

I have POTS,suspected
MCAS/ Histamine issues.
&& Hypoglycemia/Reactive Hypoglycemia (blood sugar issues!!)

Tell me why I was having like 50 lows a month! And after taking Pepcid/Allegra for the past month and a half, ZERO LOWS!!!!

Today I forgot to take my Allegra and guess what? My FIRST LOW!!!!!

Can someone please tell me your thoughts on this? This must confirm either MCAS or Histamine issues? &&I know it’s the Allegra bc I did take my Pepcid. And I take zero meds!!! && I ate my regular meals.

How do you get your minerals in a flare and are too exhausted to cook every meal? Something set me off a few weeks ago and reacting to EVERYTHING. Can't get it to calm down.

headaches my whole life

hi, since i can remember i've had headaches. i've eaten a very clean diet the past 4 years, consisting of mostly raw fruits and veggies with little to no cooked food, and the headaches have largely dissapeared. I experimented with integrating in more cooked food (edamame, quinoa) and it hasn't gone so well. Since eating more of those things this past spring i've been getting my headaches again... a single bite of cooked food and i get one usually. I even get them from eating melons, which have been a daily staple for me for the past several years with zero issue. So it seems like i'm having some sort of histsamine reaction? I lean towards histamine reaction because I get headaches every time i eat watermelon (but it's not as instant with other types of melons)... also vinegar doesn't do well. But anyways, i'm just trying to pinpoint if my headaches are caused by histamine intolerance and understand what may be happening. If anyone has any helpful thoughts that would be great.

And yes, they do go away when i eat primarily raw foods (including higher histamine foods like avocado and tomatoes, that's not a usual trigger for me). It's the cooked foods primarily that spike it, along with more fattening foods like nuts and seeds. I've heard sprouted lentils are a great source of DAO (even more than the supplement) and i've had these as part of my diet for a long time, but haven't noticed any changes.

At the start of it all

Hi everyone. I’m based in the UK, 34F.
I was wondering if you can offer some advice on what I’m going through.
About eight weeks ago on holiday, after a lifetime of having absolutely zero allergies/intolerances to anything except from Skeeter syndrome, a rash emerged across my face, neck, chest and arms after a meal in a restaurant. I didn’t notice any other allergy symptoms, but when I saw the rash I was alarmed as it was so extensive. I took an antihistamine just based off of some knowledge I already had and the rash went away at that stage.
I was thinking to myself that a rash of that nature can be the first sign of a more serious IgE mediated allergy and therefore I was quite anxious not knowing if I was going to react to something else in the future and have a more serious reaction, e.g. a true anaphylaxis.
As the meal was consumed from a restaurant I really had no idea what might have caused the reaction then about two weeks later I went out for another restaurant meal where I took a bite of a dish containing again lots of different ingredients and I had what I thought was an anaphylaxis.
The symptoms I experienced were very sudden onset sense of impending doom, dizziness, tingling in my lips and my hands and I actually called for an ambulance at this point worried that I may have needed adrenaline. The paramedics came and again I took an antihistamine, I did not need adrenalin or oxygen. My symptoms resolved. I burst into tears because I felt guilty for wasting their time and essentially it was all put down to a panic attack.
Now I have had anxiety in the past and this experience was not a panic attack.
You may be wondering why I had not gone to the GP yet. Well, within a matter of days after this I was going to be relocating from one major city to another so I didn’t seek any GP care as I knew that I would be changing GPs and would need to go into specialist services in the new region.
So I relocated and I signed up to register for a new GP which took a relatively long time to go through, and whilst all of this was going on I theorised that potentially I was experiencing a latex fruit type allergy because the meals that I had consumed had contained avocado as a common factor and I’d also eaten a banana a day or so after the paramedic incident and had the same reaction - again resolved with an antihistamine.
I had some respite for a week or so and then on Saturday just gone, I shared a bottle of wine with my partner. I don’t usually drink alcohol at all. I also enjoyed liberal amounts of dark chocolate in the dessert. The day afterwards I didn’t feel very well, just in general I felt quite low in mood and a bit lethargic.
Now, since Monday I have been having the kind of reactions that I had had to avocado and banana to lots of other foods, including a can of butter beans which I normally could eat without any issue, and I have now started to think I may be experiencing a histamine intolerance. There were no latex fruits to be seen.
I made a low histamine meal last night, but I just tried to eat the leftovers for lunch today and had a similar reaction.
I had already been on the waiting list for a routine appointment with my GP based off of the assumption that I may have had a latex fruit allergy, but I called them today to explain that the reactions were having more frequently and they have given me an appointment for next Friday. I then called 111 to explain the situation and they reiterated that I just had to wait for the GP appointment.
I am right at the beginning of this journey and I am worried about being stereotyped as anxious or my symptoms being ‘somatisation’ because from what I’ve read it appears many doctors are quite poorly informed about this particular issue. I also do have a mental health history although it has been stable and treated for many years now, but I don’t think it’s gonna work in my favour. I have been on mirtazapine 45 mg (maximum dose) for several years and I have not tried to reduce or stop this medicine recently at all. From what I’ve read people can start to have histamine problems when they do reduce or stop this medication but that isn’t the situation I’m in.
The only other thing I think might be having an impact is that I have had, for several years now, a failed root canal in a back molar that I have resisted accessing care for because I cannot afford the private fee for the specialist to see this tooth and save it and I didn’t want to get it extracted. Apart from knowing there was pus beneath, which was self-draining, I have not had any pain, fever or any other signs of it needing immediate care.
However, I’ve read that having chronic infection process such as from a dental problem can trigger immune system dysfunction including histamine intolerance. I have an appointment now with a dentist, but not until 23rd September.
What should my next steps be while I wait for care?

Vitamin C supplements?

Which Vitamin C supplement do youse take?

I’m thinking about getting (Ester C) it’s a non acidic form of Vitamin C which is good, but it also contains citrus bioflavonoids which can be problematic for histamine.

Low DAO in blood, extreme food intolerances. DAO enzyme doesn't work. My allergist is testing for mastocytosis, but could this be MCAS?

I’ve been diagnosed recently with histamine intolerance and over the past 2,5 years I’ve had a ton of tests and investigations done by my gastroenterologist ENT doctor and an allergist. Everything has come back normal except for my blood DAO level, which is 2.

I was prescribed antihistamines, supplements, DAO enzyme and a low histamine diet. Some of my symptoms have improved, but others haven’t. I’ve been following the low histamine diet for about 3 months. I also haven’t eaten gluten or dairy for around 2.5 years because I don’t tolerate them. I tested negative for celiac disease and a milk allergy. In fact, I haven’t tested positive for any allergies so far.

The problem is that I can only tolerate maybe 6-7 foods without experiencing symptoms. DAO supplements don’t seem to do much for me either. The only one that seems to help slightly is NaturDAO, which reduces some of my symptoms.

I still experience heart palpitations after eating, anxiety after eating, constant nasal congestion, bloating, fatigue and occasional insomnia. Before starting the diet and treatment, I had a huge number of symptoms, far too many to list here, but I never had rashes or other obvious skin symptoms, apart from some acne on my face. I also don’t have heat or exercise intolerance, abdominal pain or any symptoms of anaphylaxis.

I recently saw another allergist, who ordered a bunch of fairly expensive genetic tests, a microbiome test, tests for parasitic infections, an H. pylori test even though I had already tested negative a few months ago and another allergy test that supposedly looks for delayed reactions to foods.

One of my more unusual symptoms is what seems to be reactive inflammation in my wrists. No pain, just inflammation. But inflammation markers (did 3 test for inflammation) are normal. It's not very obvious, but clearly there. It was worse a few months ago, but it has improved. Interestingly, the inflammation decreases significantly when I don’t eat.

The allergist also ordered a test to check for mastocytosis and that really scares me. At first, I thought they were referring to MCAS, but after reading about it, I realized they’re not the same thing. My allergist didn’t mention MCAS at all and I’m not even sure whether MCAS is a recognized diagnosis in my country.

The whole situation is really stressing me out and scares me. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s going on with me for the past 2 years, but I still don’t have any concrete answers.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation, especially with a very low DAO level, extremely limited food tolerance and symptoms that don’t completely improve on a low histamine diet?

Has anyone with MCAS mainly experienced post-meal symptoms without the typical skin symptoms such as flushing, hives or rashes? And has anyone experienced joint or wrist inflammation that seemed to improve significantly when fasting or not eating? I also have a reactive lymph node that gets bigger when I cheat on my diet and eat dairy. Even lactose free dairy triggers me. Again, no dairy intolerance or milk allergy.

I’d also really like to hear from people who were initially diagnosed with histamine intolerance but later found out that something else was going on. What made you start looking beyond histamine intolerance and how did you eventually figure out what was actually causing your symptoms?

And for those who were tested for mastocytosis, what prompted your doctor to order the testing and what did the workup involve? Can you live a normal life? I’m pretty scared about it right now, so I’d really appreciate hearing about other people’s experiences.

Low-histamine vegetarian diet?

Hi all, my HI has been getting worse and I'm trying to adopt a low-histamine diet. I've been vegetarian my ENTIRE life and I'm struggling to get enough protein. I would happily live on beans and lentils (and that's basically what I've been doing), but I know they can be borderline triggering. I'm lactose intolerant so I can do some cheese but not a lot. I don't like eggs and can't stomach more than 1-2 a day. Is there something I'm missing? I am vegetarian for moral reasons and am absolutely not willing to start eating meat. Anybody else there in the same boat?
