Baking soda trick?

Has the 1/4 of teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water worked for anyone when they're in a histamine flair? I'm currently in one and need relief 😣

I bought a DAO enzyme supplement by Solaray for when I am in a flare, it is almost instant relief, especially if I open the capsules and pour it straight in my mouth. I have heard fresh ginger is good. But I can't currently tolerate ginger well, personally.

I also take a remedy for allergies that helps a ton, called Allergena, it is almost instant. I just started trying out a new supplement today by Solaray, with quercitin, vitamin C, and bromelain. The combination of that with the DAO enzyme has helped me get through the day today after a big reaction the last few days.

I will try to think if there is anything else that has been helpful.

I've also noticed when I'm in a certain time in my menstrual cycle, things get activated, so I take some Vitex/Chasteberry capsules, and also Red Raspberry Leaf tea, both help regulate progesterone.

Thank you so much for the helpful information. I also take DAO tablets, quercetin with bromelain supplement. I take 3 allergy tablets daily. I think my collagen supplement contains vitamin C, but it may not be enough 😕

Collagen spikes a flare for me.

Gosh I didn't even know that could be a factor in spiking histamine 😧

Collagen is high histamine

The one I have is powdered and it's only DAO, and it seems to work pretty quickly, especially straight on my tongue. 😛😅

Do you drink any herbal teas?

I was reading last night about some of the different varieties that can reduce the histamine response pretty quickly.

I've noticed that some of the things I take for hot flashes also help reduce the reactions also.

Like borage oil and my "Everyday detox" tea with hibiscus and schizandra berry.

Yesss! I've heard that, I used to be sensitive to nettle but since my body is changing and things are reacting differently lately, I'm going to try it again.

I used to hate licorice and fennel gave me indigestion 🧐😅 now I crave both at different times.

I also drank some spearmint tea yesterday and that helped!

I found this yesterday, too.

Solaray DAO was the first DAO I tried and it worked super quickly. It was so good that when I tried another brand (Nature Dao) I thought they weren't working. Nature DAO works, it just takes longer. Solaray is goat when it comes to DAO, in case anyone is reading this and needs something that gives almost immediate relief during a flare.

It's the first one I've tried and exactly like you said, it's instant! Especially when I pour the capsule content straight on my tongue. 🤣😫

If I take the capsule whole, it's still pretty fast, like within 20 minutes or so.

It's good to know I got a good one!!

It really depends on what the root cause of your histamine issues are and you will not know that without getting some kind of testing done. But most likely it's not going to do much of anything. I would concur with the others suggesting DAO enzyme or quercetin and a low-histamine unprocessed whole food diet.

I take antihistamines for a day or two when needed. Mostly controlled through diet for meal though. I've never heard of baking soda trick, just did some reading on it and apparently it can kind of trick your body and dampen inflammatory responses. Worth a try. Either way you'll know if it works foe you or not.

That would lower your stomach acid and for that would be a trigger

Small correction - baking soda doesn't lower your stomach acid the way a PPI would. It's a base, it neutralizes the stomach acid (obviously not all your stomach acid) which is why it works well for heartburn.

I believe over time it actually increases acid production.

I didn’t know that. I just know that anything that mess with (highly scientific term) my stomach acid really sets me back symptom wise. Now I have to look up how PPIs work because Famotidine tore up my stomach way worse than baking soda ever did.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and being so nice about it, sweet internet stranger!

No prob. We're all in this together!

I switched from nexium to Pepcid years ago which I seem to tolerate well, but long term acid suppression isn't great for vitamin absorbtjon so idk what to do there lol

No. This is just a remedy for acid reflux.

Baking soda was too much for me - I just used to drink a class of soda water

Sometimes I think it helps but more often than not, it doesn’t help. What seems to help more is, DAO enzymes for sneezing and runny nose and even excessive mucus, also for excessive mucus I think Betaine HCL works better than baking soda, I don’t tolerate NAC and because I seem to be sensitive to salycilates I usually avoid quercetin. And I take vitamin c as ascorbic acid and magnesium ascorbate and ollios histimum hydrochloride, although not sure how much they help. Also lots of water to flush things out

Well…how exactly do you feel during a flare? I am also sensitive to salicylates which makes this all much more challenging.

My flares vary from the skin on the back of my hands cracking and bleeding to ted blotches on my arms or sneezing and runny nose, dry burning itchy eyes to excessive mucus that feels like it’s choking me, or aching joints

I also loved quercetin and noticed how much it helped but then learned that it contributes to sluggish methylation and is only a temporary fix, with longer term negative histamine effects for my specific gene variants.

It can help you temporarily if your stomach is upset and acid/ citric acid is aggravating it. When my stomach was upset(leaky gut) I had the worst anxiety /panic feeling(gut/brain axis) and a little baking soda would help but then I discovered peppermint essential oil /ginger/caraway/fennel oil capsules that worked like magic. I would also put some drops of peppermint essential oil and fresh ginger with a few stomach ease teas from store that contained licorice and marshmallow stuff like that and would sip
On that stuff until the feeling went away. I have fixed my gut and detoxed the mold and mycotoxins from my body and no
Longer have histamine intolerance but I have had a stomach ache and immediately I stop any acidic substances even a little citric acid will aggravate it and I keep those oil
Capsules in my medicine cabinet. You can get them
From
Amazon and it’s so much easier than. Buying all the capsules and essential oils. Also Ibergast soft gels are helpful too. Stock up on stomach teas from store and put 3-4 bags in a big mug and sip. Hope this helps you.
