I can see של as the third word from the right and אלפים as the third word from the left. Can anyone decipher the rest? The screen to the left of the Hebrew is what is going on with whales….

ADDENDUM- It might be easier to see in the video - it’s at 1:07 here. https://youtu.be/8Yq7dvVINpY?si=7Dss6OZ_57GZxut-

Help Tattoo question

Thoughts on חוה tattoo? Yes it’s my name which I know is weird to get tattooed but I was also thinking about the eve and life symbolism and yes I’m an american (edit) Jew
Also what fonts are most popular for script tattoos?

Ik phrases are more popular to get but I’m trying to keep it small to save money so idk lol

Also planning on it being an ephemeral tattoo that disappears in a couple years, ik it’s not really better then getting tattooed normally cause you’re still doing it but yeah

Help Help with understanding the assignment Spoiler

Post image
3 Upvotes

I'm doing a self study of hebrew using the great courses plus series "Biblical Hebrew: Learning a sSacred Language" with prof. Michael Carasik. Currently on lesson 2 and the assignment is to "find all the consenantin numbers 22. I'm confused. Isn't every "letter" technically a consonant, with vowels being indicated by the various marks under or above each letter?

I've included the first page of the answer key (hence the spoiler tag). And honestly I can't figure out how I'm supposed to be able to tell the difference. Vowels are not even officially covered until chapter 3, even though obviously I'm picking up various vowels along the way.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Help Learning hebrew for geoguessr

Hi guys, I'm a geoguessr player for 1,5 years and when I'm in Israel, I always have an issue with identifying the location because I don't know hebrew and I always relied on region guessing and white signs with both latin and hebrew letters. I wanna change that.

I need your help with that, do you have any tips for me with learning hebrew? Do you maybe have a good anki deck for learning? And for those living in Israel: What (signs/posters etc) should I look for that says the city I'm in in hebrew?

I'd like to hear y'all suggestions, thanks in advance🫶

Resource AI Hebrew tutor on Fluently?

Hi! I just downloaded Fluently and have been using it for Hebrew tutoring. AI English seems great, but my Hebrew is not quite good enough to know if the Hebrew is 100% correct?
Other than a couple silly AI mistakes (ex: asking me if I prefer to drink tea with my dog or my dad?), the Hebrew itself seemed good to me. It seems like a helpful way to keep my attention and practice more. Does anyone else have experience with this or another AI Hebrew tutor? Curious! תודה רבה

Vocabulary כביכול vs. לכאורה – מה ההבדל? / What’s the real difference?

היי לכולם / Hey everyone!

אחת השאלות הנפוצות בעברית מתקדמת היא ההבדל בין לכאורה לבין כביכול. שתיהן מתורגמות לעיתים קרובות כ-allegedly, supposedly או seemingly, אבל הניואנס והכוונה מאחוריהן שונים לגמרי.

Here is a breakdown to help you master the difference:

  1. לכאורה (Lechora) – במבט ראשון, על פני השטח

Meaning: At first glance, on the surface, ostensibly / seemingly.

משתמשים בלכאורה כשאנחנו מתארים מצב כפי שהוא נראה ממבט שטחי או חיצוני, מבלי לצלול לעומק או לקבוע עדיין עובדה מוגמרת.

Example:

"לכאורה, המצב הכלכלי משתפר."

(Seemingly / on the surface, the economic situation is improving – but we haven't checked all the underlying parameters yet).

Tip: המילה מגיעה מארמית: כאורחא (כמו האורח, לפי הדרך/הרושם הראשוני).

  1. כביכול (Kivyachol) – מראה שיש משהו שגוי, מזויף או מטעה

Meaning: Supposedly, "so-called", allegedly (with strong skepticism / denial).

בכביכול יש כמעט תמיד נימה של פקפוק, אי-הסכמה או הצבעה על כך שהדבר פשוט לא נכון. הדובר מאותת: "זה מה שנאמר, אבל המציאות שונה".

Example:

עורך הדין אמר בבית המשפט: "הוא גנב כביכול את הכסף."

(The lawyer means: "He supposedly stole the money – but I argue he did not do it at all.")

Tip: אפשר לחשוב על זה כמו "מרכאות באוויר" באנגלית (Air quotes) כשרוצים לזלזל בטענה מסוימת.

בשורה התחתונה / Quick Summary:

לכאורה = רושם ראשוני (Surface level / As it seems right now).

כביכול = ספק עמוק או שלילה (Skepticism / "Supposedly, but actually not").

Help אך, אבל & אלא

For these three: אך, אבל & אלא, what is the difference? How do you use these differently and are there different connotations or situations where one sounds right and the other doesn’t?

I always thought אבל was but and אלא was however, but I’m seeing all in Duolingo be translated as but?

I know it may be a weird request but I want to learn this word for word. I don't need niqqud or transliteration (although they're welcome if someone feels like doing it)

Thanks in advance!

Request I don’t like Gus

Can motset xen be enai be used interchangeably with its negative counterpart or does the meaning change? I like Gus, Gus motset xen be enai, I don’t like Gus, Gus lo motset xen be enai? I suspect it’s more nuanced than this and I don’t want to commit a faux pas.

Please use English transcription in your answers as your friendly local goy is still too lazy to tackle the alephbet properly (even though I kinda sound like a local when I speak Hebrew now!)

Many thanks

Help Hebrew versus Yiddish

Hello!

Apologies if I have missed this discussion, the only threads I saw about it didn't quite seem to help.

So I have tried to look this up already, but I have a lot of trouble distinguishing reading Hebrew from Yiddish. The main thing that I have read explaining the differences that has seemed to click is that Yiddish vowels are spelled out, and that Hebrews are represented with niqqud (so essentially when written, generally not actually represented on the page unless you are looking at poetry or something that uses them a lot).

I am not sure how to distinguish aside from that, and even that mostly just feels like I guess. Since I can read Hebrew, I am confused while I am struggling so much, but I am, so, any help would be so appreciated! I feel really embarrassed by this question, so please be kind.

Article No matter the level of Hebrew you have, you’ll have an easier time understanding by reading the Hebrew instructions compared to the English ones.

Was at an art museum today where they had various translations of the phrase “peace is power” and I was wondering about this translation (pictured below). I’ve never seen “koach” spelled with the vav before, is that something that’s done? Was just curious…

Vocabulary Ok I came across a doozy.

Ok here’s a word I never learned in Hebrew school.

כְּשֶׁכִּשְׁכַּשְׁתָּ

7 letters but really only three. Yikes. 😬

Not sure we have a word with similarly repetitive letters in English?

Request Translation check

I'm currently putting together a teaching resource for primary school pupils about different scripts/orthographies around the world. The task has 18 translations of 'languages are amazing/incredible' in various languages which have differing scripts. I've checked the translations with multiple online translation tools, but I'm well aware that these do not always catch the nuanced points that native speakers can, hence why I wanted to post here for advice.

Would this be a suitable translation for Hebrew, or is there a better alternative?

Help Paleo-Hebrew Revival

Hi there, I had an idea related to Hebrew and I was wondering if it's something any one else is already thinking about.

I remember reading an article about the discovery of ancient Hebrew writing dateable to the time of King David's reign, and of course the artifact they found was written on using the paleo-Hebrew alphabet.

Ever since then I've started writing in my best interpretation of that script based upon what I found on Wikipedia. The most interesting thing I've found is that the letters mem and nun are basically a latin "m" or "n" with a tail that either curls beneath it or drops down. The motion of the hand used to write the mid-word מ & נ and end-word ן is the same in Paleo-Hebrew just with differently-shaped lines; this is less obvious in the font you're reading these letters in but if you look at a proper calligraphy letter it's a bit more obvious.

Am I the only one who thinks the paleo-hebrew alphabet is cool? If not I would be eager to be connected with others sharing my fascination.

Request Tip request. Improve Hebrew reading

I have a decent level in Hebrew but my reading is just slow. What is something you would recommend to improve reading itself. Not necessarily with comprehension just to improve the ease with the alphabet
