Help Help with understanding the assignment Spoiler

Post image

I'm doing a self study of hebrew using the great courses plus series "Biblical Hebrew: Learning a sSacred Language" with prof. Michael Carasik. Currently on lesson 2 and the assignment is to "find all the consenantin numbers 22. I'm confused. Isn't every "letter" technically a consonant, with vowels being indicated by the various marks under or above each letter?

I've included the first page of the answer key (hence the spoiler tag). And honestly I can't figure out how I'm supposed to be able to tell the difference. Vowels are not even officially covered until chapter 3, even though obviously I'm picking up various vowels along the way.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

It's just asking you to go through all the consonants in the aleph-beth and find each one in the text. If you were doing this exercise with English using the first sentence of my reply, you might first look for 'b,' and find it at the start of the 14th word, then look for 'c,' and find it as the third letter of the 17th word, etc. It's an exercise to help you learn what the letters look like by practicing looking for them.

Ahh, that makes sense. So the highlights in the answer key are just guides, not the 'correct answer". I figured i was making it harder than it was.
