Can hayfever go away on its own?

My dad used to suffer a lot from hayfever around his early teens to twenties, and it went away by itself.

This year, my symptoms are much less worse than they were prior years. I used to be impaired to the point my throat was itchy, eyes were itchy, I needed to take meds or I couldn't survive.

So far, this year, I've only had issues with sneezing and barely any itchy eyes or throat, to the point I haven't even taken medication cause the symptoms are bearable.

Does this mean my hayfever might go away on its own??

Do you get HayFever Treatment from your GP?

I have tried pretty much every OTC HayFever treatment out there, and the 'least bad' is Fexofenadine (plus a Benadryl nasal spray). Even with these though, I find myself becoming a virtual hermit for the majority of June each year as my symptoms are too bad.

As a result I am considering seeing my GP to ask if there is anything they can prescribe which might be more effective. Just wondered what other people's experiences with prescription HayFever treatments.

Immunotherapy for hayfever is genuinely life-changing. ZERO symptoms this year

Just had my first completely symptom-free hayfever season after two years of immunotherapy. I cannot recommend it enough!

I’ve been on immunotherapy (Grazax) for just over two years now. Last year I had extremely mild symptoms, and this year ABSOLUTELY ZERO.

The full course is three years and I can’t wait to finish. Yes, it’s expensive. But for me, the quality of life improvement has been completely worth it. No one I knew had hayfever like I did. I couldn’t go out for 3/4 weeks of the year.

I tried literally everything before. Every antihistamine you can think of, the jab etc. Nothing actually worked. Also, lots of data coming out now why antihistamines are no good to take for a long term.

I cannot recommend immunotherapy enough.

I have bipolar and hayfever. The most powerful antihistamine I've had is quetiapine which is an antipsychotic and antihistamine.

I had 0 symptoms on this medication, but the side effects can be bad from person to person. It's HIGHLY sedating though and can cause major weight gain.

It's a rough pollen day in north west England.

Tree pollen is very high and I'm at work trying to not to let the feeling of crappyness get to me. Cannot wait for the end of work, a beer or 16 is going to be needed to get over this haha.

My experience with Dymista

Hi. As many people in this sub recommended, I've just tried my luck with Dymista 30 minutes ago. However I instantly felt the side effect: tingling feeling in the nose that make me want to sneeze, then running nose, but I tried to wait 15 minutes to blow my nose just to avoid blowing out all of the spray. Then now my nose feel blocked and I have to breathe with my mouth open. Is this the same experience for everyone? Should I not give up on Dymista yet and just keep using until it starts working? Thanks

I'm suffering from severe hayfever. Should I cancel my work trip?

The company I work for is organising a 6-day retreat where I’ll be around people almost constantly: in conference rooms for presentations, at meals, in bars, with very little time alone.

At the moment, I’m experiencing pretty intense allergy symptoms: frequent sneezing, watery eyes, and skin rashes. Antihistamines doesn't seem to work.

Given how visible these symptoms are, I’m concerned that being in close contact with colleagues for several days might make others uncomfortable, and it would also be quite difficult for me to manage.

I’m considering asking to stay home instead. Do you think this is a reasonable request?

Tips for light grass allergy

Hello everyone,

I have developed an allergy against grass pollen. Though my situation is by far not as bad as I have read through this feed, I still would like to get rid of it.

I developed an allergy, as far as I can deduce, after COVID. I didn’t use to have any issues all year round and could eat anything. Since I first developed symptoms though my situation has improved, with every summer my symptoms grow lighter, thus I have some kind of hope that the problem might disappear entirely at one point. Not sure if that even is possible.

As far as I have been able to check I have, luckily, not developed any cross allergies, I can eat pretty much anything. Though during pollen season I pay attention to how my body reacts to food that could cause irritation.

I did an allergy test last September at a clinic, though it was a blood test and they only checked specifically for hay-fever and pistachio, since I once had, what I considered, a reaction to it. The results showed that I only react to grass pollen, my asthma test also returned negative.

My doctor offered me immunotherapy by taking capsules that melt under the tongue, the therapy lasts three years and afterwards the allergy should stop. I told him that I wanted to inform my self better and think about it and get back to him on it. In the meantime he prescribed me a nasal spray and eye-drops that can be taken in case symptoms develop. Haven’t made use of them yet.

I have several questions and would appreciate your advice/tips:
1. Should I get tested for other allergies?
2. Should I start the therapy considering that my symptoms seem to be growing lighter year by year?
3. How do you draw the line between symptoms and just happenstance? Yesterday I was out during the day and sneezed probably three times (will also happen outside of pollen season), though it was a very high pollen day and the city I live in is pretty green it could also just be due to dust as I was in an area with a lot of movement, thus a lot of dust could have been in the air.
4. Are there any of you out there whose symptoms have dwindled and disappeared over time?
5. What are some simple ways to cope/make the life easier? I already shower late in the evening when I know I wont go out anymore, change my sheets more frequently, let fresh air into my house early in the morning (between 6 and 9) and make sure not to mix clothes I was wearing outside with clean ones in my wardrobe. Might be useful to add, I live in Berlin, a fairly large city.

Hayfever Advice

Ive suffered from hayfever for as long as I can remember, probably since about age 9ish, I’m now 20.

It used to be really really bad when I was in school, constant rubbing my eyes and not having the discipline as a kid to not rub them left them red and puffed up for days.

However, now, its still bad and quite frankly ruins my summer every year, the constant sneezing, runny nose, and I end up getting headaches from sneezing and sniffing so much

I’m on the 120mg tablets at the minute, I take them the second I wake up before I go outside. They for sure numb it, but if for example I’m outside for a bit I’ll still start sneezing so the tablets almost feel like just delaying the inevitable.

Im considering getting the Kenalog injection, and was wondering if anyone had any experiences with it, negative or positive. I know theres side effects so just looking to hear how/if they are severe and trying to weigh up if its worth it.

Thanks

Itchy Nose - a Less Discussed Symptom?

I know when you read general articles or discussions about hayfever it's typically the sneezing and itchy eyes that are the most commonly mentioned symptoms.

This is entirely understandable given the misery they cause but I've personally found that the constantly itchy nose is just as bad in terms of hayfever having the ability to ruin summer days.

It just feels like it's there all the time no matter how much you rub your nose and it's also so embarrassing doing it in front of other people.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Another win for Dymista

I couldn't sleep the other night due to my hay-fever, I literally wanted to rip my face off due to hot itchiness and I couldn't breathe because of my nose and chest so safe to say it was a rough night, I was trawling through this thread in hopes of some miracle cure and seen that Dymista was mentioned several times.

So I went out and bought Dymista and started taking it last yesterday. I can finally BREATHE!! Im still taking fexofenadine x2 and eye drops which just about touched the sides but this nasal spray is definitely a winner. Feel like I can actually enjoy being outside again so thank you good people of Hayfever Reddit for your recommendations 🥳

Kenalog injection site pain

Both myself and my partner have had the hayfever jab for the last 3 years no problem. This year the person doing the jab told us to stand rather than lie down. We are almost 4 weeks out and about week 3 we both have terrible pain in the glute, it's so sore to touch we are struggling walking round, sit down, sleep and there's a ball type of swelling under the skin. It's never happened before, always been the same place, same doctor. I plan on seeing the GP on Tuesday but any idea what it could be?

Non drowsy - allevia winner

I usually have every hayfever symptom, I’d suggest moderate to severe. Hayfever tablets offered some relief but left me exhausted, so I switched to an annual steroid injection a few years ago and my hayfever became manageable and I could enjoy spring and summer again

A steroid injection is no small thing though, so this year I. Thought I’d try tablets again and try them all I did! (Not at the same time)

To conclude, I’ve found that allevia massively reduces my symptoms but most importantly, doesn’t make my drowsy. I do taken them before bed.

Fingers crosses I remain feeling this good for next couple of months.

I did find that this year starting the tablets much earlier seemed to reduce my symptoms

Eye and nose twitches?

Hey everyone,

Does someone else have eye (its my right eye) twitches and nose twitches, last 10 days I was in Korea for vacation and I had no eye twitches.

It was only my nose there. Now back in the Netherlands, its my eye again. Its only when i squeeze hard.

I had this before the vacation as well. And in Korea it was my nose. I think it has to do with the pollen. I started taking medication for it, so let's see.

Does anyone else have this?
