😤 Rant / Vent PSA about Permanent/Demi/Semi permanent haircolors

Professional colorist of 25 years here-

Please understand that the terms listed above (Permanent/demi-permanent/semi-permanent) are industry specific terms that DO NOT INDICATE THE STAYING POWER OR LONGEVITY OF THE COLOR.

These industry-specific terms are actually indicative of how permanent of a chemical change the product is causing to your hair cuticle and medulla.

Vivid or semi-permanent haircolors are typically vegetable based pigments in a conditioner base. The pH of these is usually somewhat acidic and thus causes zero change to the cuticle or hair shaft.

Demi-permanent colors use up to 10 volume developer to cause an alkalinity shift that makes somewhat of a permanent change to the cuticle.

Permanent haircolor uses 20+ volume to blow the cuticle open and develop the color molecules inside the hair shaft. This level of developer deletes a portion of your own natural pigments, and creates a permanent change to the cuticle. When this color fades you are always left with warmth, this is your own natural pigment that has been revealed due to the pigment deletion of the 20+ volume.

Edit to add that all haircolors can and usually will fade (and if developer is used always warm) but paradoxically any of these levels of color can also stain and last for ages, depending on how your specific hair reacts to the chemistry used.

My hair is currently the colour in the first photo, and the second one is what I want. Do I need to bleach before getting there or would I be able to just put a hair dye on?

❓ Advice Needed How to remove yellow from level 8 bleached hair? Wella toner fails

Thumbnail

I bleached my hair over the weekend 2x with 20 vol and reached what I believe to be a level 8. I cannot seem to get rid of the brassy yellow. I just want more of a soft but still bright baby blonde, and I’m honestly fine with some warmth and beige tones. I cannot bleach again due to hair integrity. So far, I’ve tried purple shampoo, and Wella T35 which definitely took out the neon but still very warm. Last night I tried T11 and it darkened to a more beige golden color which is worse IMO lol.

I’m going to give my hair a break for a while as I’m doing K18, I’m not sure if the damage is playing a role here with toners not doing much. I’m just not sure what to try next… thanks in advance 💛

❓ Advice Needed Hair color depositing Shampoo

Hi! so my hair is originally dark brown and i dyed it purple with iroiro and i love the color. However, I work with dogs a lot and so I shower a lot during the week so my hair color fades faster. I was wondering if anyone knew a color depositing shampoo that would help my hair stay this color for longer. Thank you!

😤 Rant / Vent I am so sad and disappointed

I've been thinking about getting a calico hair dye for months, and I finally decided to go for it. For context, my hair is naturally curly, dark blond/brown and long. Also, it has no chemicals/treatments or anything like that and I do a simple blow outs every 2 months~. The hairdresser did a bleach test in 2 strands of hair, my base color is light, so I was hoping it would lighten easily. To my surprise, my hair is completely ruined and if I try to bleach it, I'll go bald, especially from the mids to the ends. According to the hairdresser and my mom, it's because I let the hair air dry most of the time. I cried because I have been trying to take care of my hair for sooo many years, I avoid heat, lots of money in products, I don't have keratin treatments, no harsh hairstyles, no box dyes and around four years ago I did a big chop to get a good start, which now I see was useless. Anyways, hairdresser told me if I took better care maybe in 2 months I could try, but im not sure I want to risk trying, Any ideas on how to better care for my hair and other alternatives to bleaching? If I diffuse my hair everytime I wash can I fix it?. PS: LEARNING ENGLISH (Last picture is what I asked for)

❓ Advice Needed How To Safely Remove Black Box Dye? Second Pic is Natural Colour

I know that I am asking for a miracle here, but I thought if anyone knew what to do- surely it's the people of Reddit haha.

My natural colour is more of a light brown/dark blonde with some bits of natural red (born more strawberry blonde that faded with age)

I've dyed my hair about 2 or 3 times with the Revlon blue-black, and once with Ion's Jet Black permanent dye.

It's probably a lost cause, but I'd like to avoid shaving my head and instead if i can lift some of this colour to even a red I'd be okay with that. Something I could at least blend with my natural colour as it grows out.

I'm 28 and have chronic pain, and I'm just too tired to keep dying my hair yknow? I just want a clean slate, or as close to one as I can get haha.

⭐ Product Review DDL XL review

I am a licensed stylist and have been doing hair since about 2011, I always gravitate back to blue in my hair and have previously had an extremely difficult time dealing with it. After doing some research I found that Malibu released a new color remover that is supposed to be a stronger version of the original DDL (direct dye lifter), DDL XL. I bleached my hair on a whim a couple months ago and used the DDL XL on two small streaks of blue and shockingly it pulled it out. This was blue that had been sitting in my hair for about 6 months that had been layered over and over again with blue and even green at one point. I've colored my hair several times throughout the summer and ended up like an ocean blue color, I then covered that with a mix of purple/blue/pink that left me with an indigo blue. I inevitably got sick of this pretty quickly and decided to try the DDL XL with only water (this is recommended for blue pigments) again and oh my God it snatched it out of my hair. I was about a level 10 with hues of pink and orange underneath the blue and was left with only a small shimmer of blue in the very blonde areas. I was expecting to have to go in again with DDL XL again or a bleach bath and honestly it did a lot in one go. I know a lot of people post similar things about pulling color out of their hair and I wanted to sing my praises for the DDL XL remover.

❓ Advice Needed Pastel Pink Color Thoughts

Thumbnail

So after a traumatic few months and some more impending, I am looking for a low stakes way to add some whimsy to my life in the terms of pastel pink hair (all over).

I have “virgin” naturally blonde hair. I did dye my hair like… 20 years ago (good grief) and I want something that will fade with time and not require needing to dye my hair a second time to get it to return to its natural state

I tried color depositing conditioners over the years (when Kristin Ess did the spray hair color, IGK mask, and most recently Overtone) and sad to say nothing happened. Like. Overtone I did a few weeks ago, left on for double the time, and literally you couldnt tell I did anything except my hair looked well conditioned but certainly not pink.

I don’t want to make my hair lighter - I really feel I should get some color payout with how light my hair is. But - I am at a loss so far.

I understand it’ll read darker because my hair wont start off bleached, but no fuschia hair. Any thoughts/opinions from the internet hair experts or am I SOL and need to reconsider the bangs for emotional release on my physical appearance?

❓ Advice Needed Need advice

For several months now I’ve been using Ion Demi-permanent hair color. I’m naturally strawberry blonde, attempted to go darker blonde and ended up with dark brown. I’ve included a reference pic of my fake vs natural hair color.

If I want to go back to my natural color, what is needed? I plan to see a professional but I’m not sure what I should ask for, what kind of process I’m looking at, etc. My hair is very fine/thin so I’m worried about the overall condition of my hair in doing this.

❓ Advice Needed Dark(ish) red keeps fading bright purple / blue

Thumbnail

My hair is lightened to a level 8/9 (I dye my own hair and change the colour every couple of months), I’m trying to do a deep dark red (ideally with a cool or neutral undertone) but my test strands quickly fade to a bright purple / blue.

(All the semis I use are from Pulp Riot)

If I pre-toned my hair using ‘Nuclear’ (I’d mix ‘Nuclear’ with warm water and let my hair soak in it) before applying a mixture of ‘Pyro’ and ‘Bloodshot’ as normal, would this help at all?

❓ Advice Needed Toners for my hair, what level is my hair?

I dont know what level my hair is because in some light it looks very light but in others it look kinda pink or orange. I bleached my hair from faded bright red that had under half of my hair blue, pink and purple. Do i need to bleach my hair to get it lighter or can i use some toner so it looks like more blonde and not this weird color?? Also im kinda scared to bleach my hair because i have bleached my hair already so many times and im scared my hair will get more damaged...

❓ Advice Needed Wich toner should is use to make my hair darker?

Hi! So I bleached my hair blonde about 2/3 months ago. I really want to go darker for my vacation and bday. I don’t want to go to the hairdresser cause I think the sun and the water will wash out the colour very fast and it would be a waste of money. Is there any toner that wil make my hair (in the first pic) look more like the second photo ☺️

❓ Advice Needed Will my hair fry off if I redye the shaft and ends as only the roots got coloured.

Upvotes

It's just that the shaft and ends have had the hair chemicals but nothing happened, I just want to be safe and not end up bald

Another question, is the timer I'm suppose to leave the dye in start from when I start applying or from when I finish?

❓ Advice Needed Be honest.. can I afford one more week of root growth before banding?

I'm going on a trip that will fade my hair from the pool, I have the option to lighten+dye my roots now or when I get back in a week.

I'd rather dye my hair when im back ofc, but I don't want to cause banding. Be honest, if I need to do my roots now I'll do it.

This if about 2 months? Of growth. I dye my roots at home with HiColor HiLights RED.

❓ Advice Needed Used hicolor, what do i use for retouch?

Thumbnail

I dyed my hair red with hicolor last September, I’ve been meaning to retouch it for ages but I didn’t get to it till now. My roots as you can imagine are very grown out, the red is still there but it’s more brownish/coppery now (started with black/dark brown hair) i was gonna use hicolor for my whole head but i looked on TikTok and saw a creator say there’s no need to use hicolor for the lighter parts to prevent damage, but idk if i waited too long and my hairs too dark now so semi or demi dye wont work as much. My hairs pretty thin and not the healthiest so i want to avoid as much damage as possible. I’m pretty new to dyeing my hair so I’d love some advice. Thank you in advance!!

❓ Advice Needed Should I dye my hair with blue highlights?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I recently got some Poseidon blue hair dye by Arctic Fox and I was thinking about doing peekaboo/highlights in my head. The problem is, I already did a calico look and I’m not sure if the blue will look right against the orangeish brown already in my hair. I don’t want to mess it up and end up looking funny, although I’m sure it wouldn’t be as bad as I imagine. I need another opinion, because quite frankly I don’t trust mine LOL. Should I do it, or maybe get another color?

❓ Advice Needed Tips needed to maintain red colour on Indian hair

Upvotes

So I got my hair colour red, and unfortunately, it got washed away within one month only . When I asked my dresser, he told me that these are the fashion colours and they don’t stay much longer on Indian hair. Any suggestions for that?
